No i did not. Smooth sailing for me. When it completed, the reciever simply went back to normal operation. I turned it off, unplugged it, and then recalled all the settings.

I did have the error at the beggining about the missing file. I followed the instructions about unzipping the files to the correct folder and then restarted the update. It took about 20 minutes. The main firmware now shows 1.08.

Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

looks like I will have to spend more time updating the receiver.... I really hated that short wire that was like a foot long.... Another weekend will be wasted. Any idea how much does onkyo charge for the update?

Really sucks man. Been there though. Don't feel bad, just another war story you can tell when your installing your 2015 Onkoy 805x reciever and peeps are having troubles. I have fubbed so many damn things up in my years of tinkering.. at least four Asus Motherboards from teh days of ye ole Pentium II and countless video cards. My first two PSPs all were bricked. It wasn't untill i destroyed an HDTV and had to eat it that i started REALLY being careful and even then its luck of the draw.

Anyway, feel better... and in the mean time, keep reading these boards there are alot of smart people on here (read: obsessed) who will be testing all manner of fixes. One of them will eventually get it, although it may require sacrificing a chicken. I kid... I kid...

AND JUST FOR THOSE WONDERING...

I went from Main firmware 1.06 and i used a serial cable.. not a keyspan adapter. I also used a Vista PC, but made sure to give the updater program admin rights before i started (right click, run as administrator). My reciever went back to normal operation when the program completed about 2 - 3 minutes after the program stopped. I just left it alone to make sure. It probably set for 2-3 minutes after it finished the update. I took a shower while it updated LOL. I stored the settings before i started, and recalled them after i finished the updated. I then unplugged the reciever and plugged it back in. Main firmware shows 1.08 now with no errors. My opnion, the audo lock on is noticebly quicker and i've yet to see a lip sync issue although the only time i saw that was when certain TV shows played on certain networks. So far, i've not noticed any lag there.

question for you guys.

I called onkyo today. Apparently, this firmware update feature is available through Onkyo service center at no charge. Onkyo will pay for shipping and install. If I knew this I would not bother doing this install. Did anyone actually went through Onkyo service center with this? What is firmware version do they install?

I am thinking to roll the receiver back to 1.05 and just send it in.

what is the firmware version they are using? Also, they might pay for the shipping to ship back to you but are u sure they will pay or reimburse you the shipping from you to them? Do you want to live without the pre-amp for a week?

as long if it saves me a day, that's fine. Onkyo said shipping is paid. either Onkyo or service center refused to tell me the firmware version. They said "the newest version available from the manufacturer"

I would think really hard about sending your receiver in. I paid over $80 to send my 875 to DTR in Colorado (mine came with updater 1.0). It came back with firmware 1.04 (1.07 was out) and either the firmware for a lower model or a microprocessor from a lower model (I didn't think either of these was possible). My 875 was crippled at best. Luckily my dealer swapped me for a new one.

Long story short, just because you send your receiver to an "authorized" service center, does not mean you will get it back in the condition you were expecting, and does not mean you will get the latest firmware.

For all of you with the 1.0 updater, I would wait to see what people come up with for this dongle jig.

Quick question:
Is there a compelling reason to upgrade my 805 with firmware 1.06? I have not noticed any lip sync issues to date, but I haven't tried any DTS HD Master discsfor fear of the bomb. Does 1.06 fix the DTS bomb? Does the DSP fix work for the DTS bomb or other issues? I've done tons of searches but haven't found an answer.

It's things like this that really make me wish this site had a wiki.

Latest fw for 805 is 1.08.
If you do the "DSP update" for the dts/ma bomb via cd-r, then the bomb will be gone.

Has anyone upgraded an Integra 7.8(B)?
Is the firmware / software the same as the Onkyo 805?
Is the upgrade process the same?

Gurkey,

Thanks for all your help.

Final question, and most important...IMO.

Does the Firmware Updater work under Microsoft Vista operating system?

I upgraded from Windows XP to Vista (32-bit).

Don't you mean you DOWNgraded to Vista?

Yes, it does work under Vista but make sure you give the Updater program Administrative rights or the Updater program will fail.

hey guys, I installed 1.05 and everything works fine now. I think the OP should put a note in the first page saying that E2PROM error is possible with 1.08.

Also, note to everyone... I bought a USB cable extendor and the data transfer still works fine. That serial--> usb cable is rediculously short. Now, with extra 10ft i can place my laptop wherever.

Quick question(s). I downloaded the DSP update from the site on the first post. Thanks. When I look at properties it says EFW File and it's about 716KB. Is this correct? If it is, how do I unzip the file like the instructions say, or do I have to?

I just did the 805 to 1.08 (did the DSP a while back). I had no problems. I think the lock-on times are cut in half. It was really noticeable when playing from my HTPC and swapping to Dolby Digital. I would frequently have to back up a couple seconds after locking on to get the audio out of a commercial or at the start. Now, it is far quicker. Thanks for the link!

Guys, I'm trying several things here with mine...
After the prob of E2PROM and Store Fail, now I can't upgrade the DSP1, all others does the upgrade, but it doesn't upgrade the 1, no errors neither 'clear' or 'complete' messages, i wait for 10 min and pressed the stand by, and them it says 'clear'. Still works, but no upgrade on 1.

Any ideas?

I did it. It's a question of when it finishes the DSP3, just pressed play again. BTW I did with my old LD player, since my Samsung DVD couldn't.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to upgrade my Onkyo 885 to firmware 1.08. I did the dsp update with no problems... but I must be missing something for the main firmware update. Are the 885 instructions supposed to be identical to the 9.8's? I tried plugging in the serial cable, powering up while holding down the tuner-up button, but I fail to get the Main Update mode message.

BTW, I purchased the same usb->serial cable that others have mentioned here... but had to go find drivers to make it work. I found these, and was able to use them successfully to connect usb to com2, but the update.exe doesn't seem to do anything.

Any suggestions for what else to try?

It is NOT "turning +" it is "Enter".

Also, it is NOT 1.08 it is 1.07 unless you have 995/9.8 1.08 Aud pro.

You have to get the message first before update.exe works.

Thanks for all who posted especially gurkey for the info. I successfuly updated my DSPs. It was my CA security making it into an EFW file. I also burned using WMP that didn't work either. Finally unzipped it correctly and burned using Drag n Drop.
Now for the Main FW.

I completed the upgrade procedures last night to bring my Onkyo 885 from the 1.06 that it shipped with to 1.07. I was hoping that it might fix the hdmi sync issues I've been seeing, but unfortunately it seems to introduce a new problem: I'm hearing a sharp audio click/pop whenever I switch dolby digital sources (with my tivo hd -- hdmi mode = "through"). This did not occur before the upgrade.

(I can't yet speak to the "No signal" sync issues I was seeing before -- I've only been using this version for a few hours now. Previously I would quite frequently need to power-cycle the unit several times before it would sync.)

Here are the version numbers before:

87 1.06/07Z26A
dsp1: 07601A
dsp2: 07518A
dsp3: 07820B
hdmi: 1.01/07706A

and after:

87 1.07/08223A
dsp1: 8214A
dsp2: 7518a
dsp3: 7820b
hdmi: 1.01/07706A

Thanks a lot to gurkey and jeorod on their great great efforts. I have completed the upgrade to my 805 last night which is now v1.08. It looks like some people have problem on firmware upgrade, may I share what I have done on my 805.

In Feb
I bought my 805 in Feb which shipped with firmware v1.06

In late March
I used Roxio to burn DSP updates on a CD-RW disc, then use my Onkyo SP-800 to play the disc to apply the DSP firmware via optical 1. I got DSP 1 upgraded, DSP 2 remain no change and DSP 3 stuck at the end of progress. I have to power off my 805 after waited for 10 minutes which followed the instruction (PDF file).

Last night
I unzip the main firmware v1.08 for 805 into my Windows XP Professional PC, connect the PC to 805 with a DB9 straight serial cable. Configured the COM1 in Windows to 115200,8,N,1,hardware. In the Updater, I set COM1 to 9600. Applied the firmware which took almost 20 min. then my 805 switch off automatically. Turn it on and checked to confirm that it is v1.08.

I purchased an 805 last July. It came with 1.04. I updated it to 1.08 today and it turned itself off. Turned it back on and confirmed that it was at 1.08. Reset the receiver to its defaults as suggested and I got the clear message and it turned itself off.

That's all she wrote. Won't come back on. No standby LED. Nothing. Unplugged everything and let it set for an hour. Nothing. Nada. Dead.

Have to ship it in for warranty service.

Any suggestions?
