Any suggestion on how I can equalize the sound better or am I just at the mercy of the mixed track coming from DTV?
If you are using Dynamic EQ, try setting it to OFF. If that resolves the issue, although the unit doesn't feature the Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset setting found on the newer models, you can set the Source Level for the DTV source to +10db which will reduce the impact of Dynamic EQ if you want to keep it ON.

Think you have a defective AVR? Owner's manual - Factory reset 4-5 times in a row.

Yes I am using Dynamic EQ. I will give your suggestion a try and turn it off. Thanks for the tip.

It seems that my old Denon 2809 cannot pass any type of 5.1 audio from my new Roku4. I really doubt it's hdcp 2.2 compatible. Can others confirm?

The 2809 is only HDMI 1.3 so cannot pass 4k video, however, when the Roku 4 is only passing 1080p video, there shouldn't be any problems with passing the audio. Only the new 2015 Denon models can pass a 4k/HDCP 2.2 video signal, such that when passing 4k/HDCP 2.2 video you would have to connect the Roku 4 HDMI directly to the 4k/HDCP 2.2 TV and the Roku optical to the AVR (providing the Roku 4 can use both outputs simultaneously).

Thanks for the detailed response. So if I decided to upgrade to a new 2015 Denon, which one would be a nice replacement? I'd be interested in moving up one/two 'features' levels. I'd like to keep this unit 5 or so years.

The 2015 X4200W is the replacement for our AVR.
I will be doing that very soon. The 4200 finally has all the complete 4K goodness that the 2014 4100 didn't have.

HTPC | 12TB NAS | Harmony Elite | DENON X4200W | Sharp 70
Klipsch RF7II,RC64II,CDT5650CII | SVS SB2000 x2

The current successor model to your 2809CI is the X4200W which is a 7CH model and can do up to Atmos 5.2.4 with an external 2CH amp and uses the more advanced Audyssey MultEQ XT32. The next model up is the X6200W which is a 9CH model and can do Atmos 7.2.4 with an external 2CH amp. Either would be a step up from your 2809CI. Review the first 6 posts in the 2015 Denon AVR Owner's thread linked below for more info on the 2015 models.

Send me an email request to jd@avscience.com using a non-gmail/.edu email address and I'll forward the update to you.

The last update resolved an issue when playing the Star Wars BD as noted in the following post:

I just bought a 7702mk2 and am trying to use my 2809 amps to power some ceiling/surround speakers via Ext In. Used RCA connectors to connect the two units. Surround back left on the Marantz went to Ext In SBL etc. etc. I ran ran the speaker connections out of the corresponding speaker plugs.

I set the "Input" to Ext In.

However, it is all tied to what input source. DVD, Tuner etc I have changed it to Ext in. 2809 display says DVD Ext In but still no sound to these speakers. What Am I doing wrong?

Raise the master volume level of the 2809CI to 0db.
