It really doesn't do anything for me over a power strip other than the battery backup. All that filtering you may have read is a myth. Also, it's 22" deep with all the cords in back so you need a deep cabinet and it takes up a spot in your cabinet. I like it...and top notch support vs other businesses. But, price is a consideration as you could use that money towards a damn good plasma, receiver, blu-ray, etc.

I have my plasma, blu-ray, HTPC, Harmony remote, modem, cable box and router connected to it. My sub is too far away so it's on it's own.

Aside from that, it's good bling for my cabinet.

Power consumption below, though it varies and can get up to 750W.

thanks so much for the info and time you put into it

I think this is what you will need to do:

Go in to your input menu (page 92) to tell your sc-05/07 how you have it connected.

Do this with HDMI Control off.
First, you need to assign a function on the remote for your htpc
example: If you want to assign "dvd" for your htpc; from the "input setup menu", select "input ": Dvd , "digital in": Digital (coax 1-3) and "hdmi input": Hdmi (1-3)

page 92:

page 93: (default values)

from the above example, anytime you want to connect your htpc, you would hit dvd on the remote
when you try this, if you still don't hear sound, you may have to go to the "input signal" menu (page 38) by pressing sig sel on the remote and scroll between auto, hdmi, digital and analog - because it will sense hdmi and assume audio is also hdmi (you should only have to do this once).. Digital will be the one you want (see below)

page 38:

hope that works, let us know

So my problem started with the iPod touch, sw 2.2.1. Could navigate control it with the OSD but no sound. My media gateway sw version is: 3.7.30.7468. I then plugged in one of the kids nanos and all worked perfect. I have 2 car integration units that are digital and they have never had issues like this through all the sw upgrades from Apple.. I also tried 3 different iPod cables, same thing, no sound.

Can't seem to get through to Pioneer yet....

Any other folks have a way to fix this???

--Bill

Bill,

I had the same problem within the last 5 days: new SC-05, iPod Touch 2.2.1 recognized by the receiver but no sound at the speakers. I did get through to Pioneer 4/13/09 and was advised by a rep who seemed to have heard of this issue before that there is a firmware update by Pioneer to be released in a week or two (April 2009) that fixes the problem. The same issue has been raised on Apple forums with respect to Pioneer receivers. I talked to Apple and their rep could only shrug his shoulders, so to speak. The iPod was working fine; not Apple's problem. Perhaps there's no practical way Apple can upgrade its software and be sure there won't be a compatibility issue somewhere with some product, and neither can Pioneer or other hardware manufacturers. No doubt the Touch and the SC-05/07 were compatible when the Pioneer owner's manual was printed, probably with 1st gen Touches. I do wish my Pioneer dealer had been up to speed on this though. Anyway, Pioneer can supply the name of the place nearest you that can do the firmware update when it's available. Also, re cables for your iPod, you probably know that evidently the device will only work with cables manufactured with an authentication chip, cables that of course you can only get from Apple or authorized agents for rather a lot of money.

how do you switch it to "stream direct?" I hit the THX button and now I can't get out of THX mode.

While listening to a source, press AUTO/DIRECT
(AUTO SURROUND/STREAM DIRECT) to select the
mode you want.
Check the digital format indicators in the front panel
display to see how the source is being processed.
AUTO SURROUND - See Auto playback on page 35.
DIRECT - Sources are heard according to the
settings made in the Surround Setup (speaker
setting, channel level, speaker distance, acoustic
calibration EQ, and X-curve), as well as with dual
mono, the input attenuator, and any sound delay and
hi-bit/hi-sampling (SC-05 only) settings. You will hear
sources according to the number of channels in the
signal.
PURE DIRECT - Analog and 2 channel PCM sources
are heard without any digital processing.1

Sweet! Signal Select did it- Thanks CHP_VR!!
Too bad me setting the value in the "input setup" was not enough! So we are all set now..thank goodness!!

PS After having a denon 3808, onkyo 905 and 876, a few older yamaha's and a pioneer vsx01 with a sunfire cinema amp...this is my favorite Receiver yet. If you can handle missing HDradio and a few little things this is the baby to get!

Since I noticed I am not the only one with this question maybe we should put it in the faq?

Looking on videogon, they seem to be within a few hundred of each other, although thee MSRP of the SC05 seems to be substantially higher.. Has anyone compared (or come from) the 01 and moved to the SC05? Are there substantial sonic differences with the ICE amps?

Sources would be PS3 for BR/games, WII via component, HTPC for movies, music, etc, and cable STB via HDMI for SD/HD, if any of that matters. This will hopefully be mated up with a Pio 600M monitor.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

My two cents..
It depends on what you want out of your system.. How important is music, and how important is the "Home Theater" experience to you?

For comparision, you want to compare the VSX-01 to the VSX-1018, VSX-92/94 etc... the SC amplifiers are a different technology, you would compare the SC-05 to the SC-07 and SC-09TX..

A number of people have come from the VSX series (including VSX-92, VSX-01, even high end Denons, Pioneer Flagships, and Onkyos).. you may want to look at the member's reviews linked on the first page Aaron (there's two pages now). It lists their previous AVRs, speakers, and impressions.
Good luck, if you have specific questions, we'll be happy to help

hey guys, just 1 more question. We have a pair of outdoor speakers, which I guess would be a zone 2. The SC-05 can power these with a separate audio input, while still feeding the insides 5.1 channels, correct?

No worries

You may want to look at the manual.. there are several ways to set up a zone 2 configurations starting on page 66.

Wanted to post and say hi, been lurking for a long time on this thread. Finally convinced myself to get the SC-07 over the 05.

I have my 07 set up in a closet with a Harmony remote + RF extender controlling it, connected to my TV with HDMI. Here's my dilemma, when I'm watching cable, I don't really want to use the 5.1 setup, so I manually go into the room and hit Audio Parameter, and set the HDMI from AMP to THROUGH. Is there a way that I can have it set up where the Source Input remembers if it's supposed to go through the AMP or THROUGH?

silentrun;
Your best solution may be to just run component out from your cable box to the display (plus toslink for audio)... then just set a new activity that only turns on your cable box and tv.. bit of a hassle, but that would save the aggrevation of having to switch from AMP to THROUGH each time....

If you didn't want to run that many cables, how about another HDMI to your display (assuming you have two HDMI inputs), then switch the HDMI from your cable to SC-07 to component > SC-07?

Hope I'm not breaking any posting rules here but I've been considering an SC-05 for a while and have been happily watching the price come steadily down - especially over the past month or so. For those of you that are in the same boat and are in the NY metro market, I just got an email from a regional retailer about a "make an offer" promo they are running this week. I offered them less than half the MSRP and within 30 minutes, they accepted. Though I wasn't planning on buying until summer, this is simply too good to pass up. An added plus is that they are an authorized retailer so no issues with gray market product. It would appear that Pioneer really dropped its dealer price otherwise there's no way they can do this. Now I just to figure out how to explain it to my better half...

Yeah, those J series are just crazy expensive. I would recommend the silver H10 which is the one I'm using and I basically have the same electronics that you have. Silver is much cheaper than black because I believe I read that they're getting rid of their silver models. This doesn't have a UPS built in but just having the UPS feature is darn expensive if you don't have constant brownouts or a projector. I bought mine from CompUSA for $120 after shipping during a special they had. TigerDirect also has this for $150 now.

I got the same memo, except I'm in Ohio. That would be 6th Ave Electronics. They're authorized. But, they'll only sell the Elite series out of their storefront., as you found out.

Nice find and welcome to the club.

I was successful with a cheapo Rat Shack unit.

It turns out that all USB to Serial cables are not created equally. The one that I obtained from Fry's Electronics manufactured by Micro Connectors did not work. However, the USB to Serial cable obtained at Micro Center and manufactured by ATEN worked just fine.

Okay, don't mean to go off on a rant here but talked to Pioneer about the DD+ issue with hddvd's today. While explaining the issue I was cut off before I could even finish expaining the problem and was told someone looked into this last week and the issue was in the Toshiba X-A2 player and not the SC-05 receiver. The rep was arrogant and rude as hell and explained all receivers had HDMI 1.3 so they were the same. I explained why aren't other brand name receivers having the same issue, and why is the SC-09 playing flawlessly? His story contradicted itself countless times during the conversation and he explained the same issue has happened the Samsung player as well and bluray players playing DD+ titles? Yet with multiple players having the same issue and one receiver brand decoding the data it was always the players that were at fault. He gave no information as to when the testing was done or the conclusions of the results as in what exactly in the Toshiba player was causing the problem just the Pioneer receiver was perfect and all the hddvd players were messd up. I asked for detailed information as to what the engineers found and his responce was simply the player was at fault.

This is what we know
1. It affects the Pioneer SC-05 and 07 along with the VSX-01 and 03 and the VSX-92 and 94 series receivers as stated by fellow forum members. (I checked the boards after the reps comments, this is a common Pioneer receiver problem) The SC-09 appears to properly decode DD+.

2. It happens with Paramount and Universal titles running at 1.5 mbps. Warner 640 kbps and Image music titles appear to be unaffected.

3. The issue occurs with the Toshiba X-A2, Toshiba A-35, the Onkyo HD-805, LG BH200 and the Samsung BD-UP5000.

4. Other receivers seem to be unaffected by this, Yamaha, Denon, Sony, Onkyo, etc. I personally owned a Onkyo 805 and had no issues with bitstreaming from my X-A2.

5. I never got a clear answer as to what in the player caused the issue and was told he could not give me that information. I felt as if I was gettin the runaround from Pioneer customer service and that they didn't care about the issue. I find it hard to believe that 5 different bitstreaming hddvd players are all flawed and the Pioneer receivers are perfect when the hddvd players bitstream flawlessly in other brand receivers! Needless to say the Pioneer rep disagreed.

In a nutshell I have purchased nothing but Pioneer products for the last 12 years with the sole exception of the Toshiba X-A2, my replaced BDP-05FD ( I won't even get into that!) has had many issues and I am getting worn out with products that do not perform as specified. In the past if I had a problem Pioneer would recreate the issue in California with there engineers and try to find a fix concerning the problem not just feed the consumer a line without any evidense or proof of the findings. Given this attitude toward the consumer I can clearly see the position they are in and that unless drastic changes are made it would be best they simply close up shop unless they can start backing their products and making sure they perform as adertised. Consumers can live without Pioneer, Pioneer cannot live without consumers.

I don't see how this can be a Toshiba issue when the bitstreaming is flawless in other receivers. If someone disagrees please explain.

Sidenote, the Sony 5300 had identical issues with bitstreaming hddvd players that the Pioneer receivers do. Sony gave a firmware upgrade to the receivers that fixed the problem, it would be nice if Pioneer cared enough about their customers to do the same!
