I think all the THX settings are dulling the sound a bit for nighttime viewing.

Am I correct?

i didnt think so... these THX modes are optimized for these particular named modes i suppose , as in THX CINEMA is recommanded for movies, THX Games is for games.. Thx loud correction is the setting that dulls the sound for night viewing, its similar to the DYNAMIC EQ setting but ppl say the DYNAMIC EQ is a better overall option.

Am i wrong guys? these THX listening modes are optimized for games, movies and msusic and u can choose them.. i read in this thread many ppl love the THX cinema mode, of course i havent tried it cuz i dont have my 706 yet, i think it will be here monday.. im gonna order it in a few hours from abt

THX modes by default have Re-EQ turned on, which rolls of the high frequencies.

THX nor Dyn EQ are meant specifically for night viewing. THX modes are just different EQ type settings to give different sound. Dyn EQ adjusts the audio for not listening at reference level, but it does not compress dynamic range like a "night mode" would. Dynamic EQ is supposed to make things sound like they should on the mixing stage at reference volume level even though you are not listening at a level that loud. If you turn your volume up to 0, Dyn EQ gets turned off.

That being said I never use any of the listening modes. Just give me the sound as it was recorded. I do add PLIIx to some movies to fire up the back surrounds on a 5.1 source though.

And I use Dyn EQ 99% of the time.

I don't game.

But if I did, I wouldn't change it to anything other than straight DD or what ever the source is, just like I do for TV, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc.

Thanks for clarifying.

I use the THX modes most the time too, and the Select2 mode for blu rays.

The Select2 mode doesn't always show up.

While we are on the topic of listening modes, what do you guys use for music?

I stream from the 360 most the time, from the PS3 sometimes, and do some FM listening.

What do you guys use for music through the 360, PS3 and FM?

Hey doug, the select2 mode is a special hd mode? The reciever is full of Options which i love man, im gonna order it in like an hour, i think it will get here moday!

On my ps3 with blurays i have it set to multichannel pcm on my current sr606. The select2 will give a better effect than multichannel pcm?

To make sure i understand, if i use a THX listening mode. It overrides auddysey's equalized setting?

Mulit-channel PCM and Select2 are two different animals. PCM is an audio format, Select2 is audio processing. You can apply Select2 to the Multi-channel PCM audio coming from the PS3. If you see just Mulit-channel PCM displayed on the receiver you are passing the audio straight through with no processing.

Is Select2 better than no Select2...only you can decide.

Haha thx man, will surely do.

I cant belive how inferior the auddysey on the sr606 is(2eq). , i checked on the auddysey website, it doesnt even equalize the subwoofer at all! Shame.. Oh well its a budget receiver so..

I thought the difference between the different auddysey versions was only the number of spots it can measure but after some reading on auddsey's website, its more than that.. Better filtera aswell.. Cant wait to get this beast haha

hey man, the only problem is the blue dots but theres an easy fix and thats to disable the On screen display and setting the reciever to THROUGH, i also dont need to upconvet any components or anything like that so this reciever will be just what i need..

I ordered mine this morning from ABT. should get here monday

I checked the denon 2809ci prior to this at best buy magnolia and i really DONT like how to operate that reciever, everything seems so complicated..

Btw the blue dots problem is not only on this model, its also on some denon models, it has nothing to do with the reciever but with the Video Chip used, im gonna have that thing disabled and i dont even need it one bit, i need a reciever for AUDIO, and this one ton of that, Thx Modes, Auddysey Multi EQ and Dynamic EQ, i think the denon doesnt have this.. u need to pay extra to get it.

Anyway this reciever is just too good to pass on, of course if i will have any problem i will return it and just forget about it and stick to my SR606 but i really want to upgrade so ya

I use just an HDMI cable with my XBOX360 and 706 and I get 5.1 just fine.

No, I don't believe everyone is having problems.

There are many owners that have posted that they have had no problems with this receiver.

Is it fair to say that "they all have problems"? The Denon appears to be a nice receiver also, but skimming through the "Official" thread will give you deja vu of the 706 thread.

...and yes I can convince you to buy this receiver. It has a blue knob.

Good luck in your search!

Sure am. The XBOX has some quirk where one day I will turn it on and I'm getting Dolby Digital 5.1 and other times it would boot up to 2.0 stereo. But when it does boot up in 2.0 I just play a video and go right back to the dashboard so it resets the audio settings and Dolby Digital turns on.

Hope that made sense. LOL

Yeah the XBOX is lacking in the audio department but the 706 does such a good job with post processing that it's really a non-issue.
