Hello, quick question, I can buy either a H/K 354 or a Onkyo 706 for the same price. Which one should I buy and why?

Why is the refrubished sr706 silver $200 cheaper than the refurbished sr706 in black at shoponkyo
Same case for the 806 refurbished. Silver is $200 cheaper.
Anyone know why?

The black looks better, probably easier to sell.

I just hooked the Panasonic BD35 with my new Onkyo 706 receiver and while watching Journey to the Center of the Earth Blu Ray disc, I noticed that the receiver does not display the "HD" mode. It just displayed Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital EX along with other modes. I have a hdmi cable going from BD player to receiver and receiver out to TV in. Is the correct hookup? Should the receiver display the "hd" signal? or do I just simply have a defective receiver? Help! Thanks.

I helped my dad put together the same set up. Make sure the BD35 is set to bitstream. This ensures that the receiver is doing the encoding.

You can access the option to bitstream in the setup menu of the player when you have no movie in the tray.

Thanks. It's already setup to Bitstream on the BD35. Does your receiver say "TrueHD" on the panel display? Do I need hdmi from the receiver out to the TV?

I have the player going to the receiver through HDMI and the receiver out to the T.V. through HDMI also. My receiver does say True HD or DTS MA depending on the movie.

thanks,

Cambridge Soundworks MC155 fronts and MC105 or S105 surrounds www.hifi.com but this won't include a subwoofer. Or Newton Ensemble M55 Music System that is a 2.1 setup

http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Cha...8023150&sr=1-1
is a 5.1 choice that does include a subwoofer

If your Blu ray player is doing the decoding, the Onkyo wont display TrueHD or HD MA. It will only say that if its the one doing the decoding. It's playing the HD audio, but it wont say it.

They sound like a good value, especially with a little shopping around.
Here is a comparison of the Nanosats with similar Polks:
http://www.hometheatersound.com/equi..._dswpro400.htm

Here are the polks described above:
http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-5-C...054173&sr=1-26
If you read further down in that page, you'll see you can add the PSW10 subwoofer for free.

When I navigate to the setup screen I get a lot of flickering and random interference across the entire tv screen. Also, when I set the receiver to upconvert my Comcast HD DVR there is again a lot of the same interference (but no flicker). I'm connected Box --HDMI--> Receiver --HDMI--> Samsung 67" LED DLP. When I set to HDMI through I don't have any problems. Is this normal for these units or should I send it back? Unit was direct from Onkyo and was a refurb. Setup mic worked fine.

Ahhhhhhh yes!

I am a little pissed.

I had the same problem with mine. The mic wouldn't hear the first speaker (although I certainly did.)
The next day I tried to switch the polarity on the speaker as I was out of sensable options. Somehow this made it work. I was pretty sure that I had it hooked up correctly the first time around and in any case I can't believe that this would make a difference. But it did. Or maybe it didn't and it was just a strange coincidence.

I have used Audyssy several times since that first night too, and it works perfectly every time now.

Odd, but I'll take it.

And I didnt change any wires around, 12 hours later, it just decided to work.

Anyone have a problem with the subwoofer distance being calibrated incorrectly with Audyssey? All other speakers are reading correctly but the sub always shows 7.5' when I know it's about 11'. Have done the setup 3 times and always get the same thing. If it's any help the sub is an M&K MX350. Thanks, Joe

I've actually read through all of these and it seems that there are less problems with the more recently purchased units. It also seems that many of the issues are with referb units.

I just ordered mine from newegg.com ($479), but it's a TX-SR706B. Does anyone know the difference, if any? I'm hoping it's a newer version that has all these issues resolved.

I'm still a little concerned about the heat issue. I will have basically no clearance on top of the 706 unless I raise the shelf above it. I can't raise the shelf above it due to the height of my center channel speaker, (7"). I may need to get a new shorter center channel speaker, so I can raise the shelf. Any suggestions? All components sit on a "2 shelf" stand underneath my 65" Mitsu. My fronts are Definitive Technology BP 10s and am running a 15" Velodyne sub. Rears are pretty typical.

I'm expecting delivery of my 706B in a couple days. Will post back whatever happens good or bad.

Thanks,
Steve

I believe the B is for black. Can anyone confirm?

Any advise on my video processing issue above? Should I send it back and try another?

My refurbished 706 showed up today. It's beautiful. Except...

I've just spent the last couple hours dismantling my old setup. Now that I have this thing connected I'm getting BLUE streaks/noise on all inputs. If I set the HDMI output resolution to 'Through', make sure all of the Picture Adjustments are set to their defaults (all zero), and make sure Noise Reduction is off (in SourceSetup->PictureAdjust) I'm at least able to get my HDMI inputs to come in clearly. This these settings the Wii which is hooked up over component still has the strange streak/noise issue.

Anyone have any idea? Is this unit faulty?

What sort of interference? What does it look like?

Also, yes, 'B' is for black and 'S' is for silver.

its going to get hot.

You are going to have to figure something out there. Someone a few pages back installed a fan, check it out.

In my previous post where I say,"any suggestions"... I was fishing for any suggestions for a smaller (less than 7" in height) center channel speaker.

I may actually be able to raise the shelf that the center channel speaker is sitting on by one hole, thus giving some breathing room for receiver. I plan to hook up some sort of fan... just haven't started looking around for that yet. It needs to be a quiet one.... once again, any suggestions on a small fan would be appreciated.

Thanks,

For those of you who have been holding their breath.... I was able to raise the glass shelf one notch higher above where the 706 will be placed, providing 8 1/2 inches of vertical space... still tight... but better. Center channel speaker just barely fit.

Now anxiously awaiting delivery tomorrow. Hopefully ONKYO has these bugs worked out on the more recent builds.

Thanks,

I am thinking 8 1/2 will give you pretty good ventilation.

It will get hot, but I have NOTHING over the unit, so try not to freak about it.

Well.. that leaves me about 1 1/2" of clearance between the top of the receiver and glass shelf above it. My center channel speaker is directly above the receiver and my 65" Mitsu is directly above the center channel speaker... typical set up.

I've contacted these guys for their suggestion:

Ordered a refurb as well - it's not expected here (MD) until next week I'm a little apprehensive because of the reports of people with blue lines etc on their screens. Does this seem to be a heat-related phenomenon?
