So, despite all of the posts of bad experiences posted with the 7550's users, I recently took a "BIG" leap of faith and acquired a used revised 2010 AVR7550 for a very reasonable price. I have always tried to do everything on the cheap. However, this unit does have a glich and requires a double start to power on. Seems to be a common complaint and I hope it doesn't get worse.
The 7550 is one hell of an amp. I am impressed with it's ability to reproduce fine detail and dynamics at lower volume. EZ/Set II with 2 subs is outstanding. I rarely feel compelled to take it to reference level. It drives my Energy Veritas bookshelves extremely well. I am finally satisfied with my sound. For now lol
As posted previously, EZSET/EQ II is incredible but now dated. It did Near & Far Field measurments, plus doing (2) subwoofers independently years before
Audyssey. Pretty hard to beat the experience of Dr.Toole and his team, some may talk the game but few deliver..
I am rather curious just how many 7550's have been returned or went bad. Only a few bad apples? relatively speaking or was it considered a flop? How many returned units compared to overall sales?
Don't know but could find out... Production was done in (2) factories, the 2nd factory is the same one that builds all of the Marantz AVRs. My 7550HD development sample is still working fine after 5 1/2 years but it is a prototype actually hand-built by the design team not the factory.
Mcode is right, the enhanced layering capabilities of Logic7 sound processing on the 7550 is phenomenal and far exceeded my expectations. It is def a hidden gem on this sweet aging flagship AVR.
Logic7 on my HK AVR1600 was not even the same animal. I never much cared to used it. IMHO Dolby Pro Logic IIx was better on that unit.
The fulll-process Logic 7 in the 7550HD/760/660 is totally different than the PCM > Logic 7 in the lower HK AVRs. The full-process Logic 7 can also be used with 7.1 HD audio streams and can be incredible, it has to be heard to be appreciated.
With respect to HK company and the defunct design team of the 7550, It would be nice to hear from other owners of the 7550 who have actually had successful long term great experiences from this model instead of just bad reports and horror stories. Maybe I could use a little reassurance that I didn't waste my $$, and the real percentages of failed 7550's weren't quite as bad as everyone has mentioned.
Any thoughts M-code? Is HK (and others)ultimately headed toward consumer mediocrity like so many other brands? Is the audio industry trans-mutating to a system on a chip mentality??
After Dr. Harman's passing, the executive management and their corporate/strategic direction & priorities changed...
Now OE automotive and wireless Apple multi-media stuff take the lead emphasis, while their consumer audio hi-fi biz is off by several millions $...
Where does their consumer audio biz go in the future?
This is a great question, they own some of the best brands in CE biz..
@ CES2014 and their HardRock display they strongly pushed the new infinity loudspeakers, but IMHO...
They need to do a little market research and see that the major growth today is in electronics and later digital audio, video and connectivity technologies.
Plus being bundled in creative system packages..Not
How do they design/build/deliver unique, profitable audio/video components? Since their most experienced hardware & software design staff has departed
, it is straight forward to find contract manufacturers and sales distribution channels..
But without a creative, advanced direction of their product development design process, it will be difficult..
They need to recharge this resource and press forward...
It is possible, but requires a different mindset & intiative which as of now has not yet surfaced...
Just my $0.05.... 👍😉
