A true top end traditional Harman receiver with Logic 7 applicable at all resolutions and with full room EQ capabilities....

Don't hold your breath....
HK is more interested in the mass market categories..
Plus their AVR team, hardware and software has been retired...
Sad but true... ๐Ÿ˜ก

With M-Code's generous expert information on HK, I was really intrigued by the enhanced feature set of the now defunct flagship 7550.
So, despite all of the posts of bad experiences posted with the 7550's users, I recently took a "BIG" leap of faith and acquired a used revised 2010 AVR7550 for a very reasonable price. I have always tried to do everything on the cheap. However, this unit does have a glich and requires a double start to power on. Seems to be a common complaint and I hope it doesn't get worse.
The 7550 is one hell of an amp. I am impressed with it's ability to reproduce fine detail and dynamics at lower volume. EZ/Set II with 2 subs is outstanding. I rarely feel compelled to take it to reference level. It drives my Energy Veritas bookshelves extremely well. I am finally satisfied with my sound. For now lol
I am rather curious just how many 7550's have been returned or went bad. Only a few bad apples? relatively speaking or was it considered a flop? How many returned units compared to overall sales?
Okay so I 'm really happy so far, not many dollars invested. I just hope the damn thing holds up for a while. A really long while, because it sounds awesome.
Mcode is right, the enhanced layering capabilities of Logic7 sound processing on the 7550 is phenomenal and far exceeded my expectations. It is def a hidden gem on this sweet aging flagship AVR.
Logic7 on my HK AVR1600 was not even the same animal. I never much cared to used it. IMHO Dolby Pro Logic IIx was better on that unit.
With respect to HK company and the defunct design team of the 7550, It would be nice to hear from other owners of the 7550 who have actually had successful long term great experiences from this model instead of just bad reports and horror stories. Maybe I could use a little reassurance that I didn't waste my $$, and the real percentages of failed 7550's weren't quite as bad as everyone has mentioned.
Any thoughts M-code? Is HK (and others)ultimately headed toward consumer mediocrity like so many other brands? Is the audio industry trans-mutating to a system on a chip mentality??

I had three 7550hd units and all had some kind of an issue.

The Marantz SR7008 I have now is a much better receiver and sounds even better!

I remember you speaking of advancements in a new generation of H/K avr's, so that's aborted...no new stuff? Just sell off the current units and goodbye?

As posted previously, EZSET/EQ II is incredible but now dated. It did Near & Far Field measurments, plus doing (2) subwoofers independently years before Audyssey. Pretty hard to beat the experience of Dr.Toole and his team, some may talk the game but few deliver..

Hmm..
Don't know but could find out... Production was done in (2) factories, the 2nd factory is the same one that builds all of the Marantz AVRs. My 7550HD development sample is still working fine after 5 1/2 years but it is a prototype actually hand-built by the design team not the factory.

The fulll-process Logic 7 in the 7550HD/760/660 is totally different than the PCM > Logic 7 in the lower HK AVRs. The full-process Logic 7 can also be used with 7.1 HD audio streams and can be incredible, it has to be heard to be appreciated.

After Dr. Harman's passing, the executive management and their corporate/strategic direction & priorities changed...
Now OE automotive and wireless Apple multi-media stuff take the lead emphasis, while their consumer audio hi-fi biz is off by several millions $...
Where does their consumer audio biz go in the future?
This is a great question, they own some of the best brands in CE biz..
@ CES2014 and their HardRock display they strongly pushed the new infinity loudspeakers, but IMHO...
They need to do a little market research and see that the major growth today is in electronics and later digital audio, video and connectivity technologies.
Plus being bundled in creative system packages..
Not component loudspeakers...
But...
How do they design/build/deliver unique, profitable audio/video components? Since their most experienced hardware & software design staff has departed, it is straight forward to find contract manufacturers and sales distribution channels..
But without a creative, advanced direction of their product development design process, it will be difficult..
They need to recharge this resource and press forward...
It is possible, but requires a different mindset & intiative which as of now has not yet surfaced...

Just my $0.05.... ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‰

Your 7550 is coming back from where for what reason? I thought it was going to be parted out and replaced with 3700?

The AVR3700 is the modern equivalent to the AVR345 (or 347) from the 645 era. The power amplifier and power supply of the 645 is quite a bit beefier and the protocol for how power output figures are attained has also changed. Itโ€™s true that the 3700 is our highest offering in our current lineup, but that is because we discontinued our top 3 tiers. There was no successor to the AVR445 and AVR645 (those tiers were dropped). AVR7550HD was the successor of AVR745, but as of now there has been no successor to the AVR7550HD (seems this tier was dropped too).

You are probably just hitting the limit of the AVR3700โ€™s output. Possible solutions:
1) You could use the 645 as a power amp (connect 3700 pre outs to 645 direct in and wire speakers to 645)
2) Listen at slightly lower levels
3) If you have your speakers set to large, you could probably get more headroom out of the amp by raising the crossover frequency instead of running them full range.

Thanks, I am sure others are interested also. I've had one repair on my 7550 under warranty. The HDMI board went bad.

Here is the response:

We replaced several transistors in the power amp and re-bias it. As a preventative measure, we also replaced the small fan for the video board.

The 7550HD/760/660 has independent bias controls for each amplifier channel, to do it right they need to be set and then the AVR should be run for 3-4 hours to burn it in. Then the bias should be rechecked to make sure it is within specification..
Regarding the small fan for the HDMI board, early production runs had some issues with this...
Apparently the motor bushing was not lubricated properly, a motor with an actual bearing was speced out but later replaced in mass production with the cheaper, motor using a bushing..
If the work was completed in Northridge CA, most likely it was done by Jeb P, who is very experienced for that model...

Just my $0.05... ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‰

It is not possible to express how amazing the 7550 sounds and in comparison how soulless the 3700 is.

Would not trade mine for anything out there. I hope it last a very long time. Added two 80mm Nexus fans (one over HDMI board and other over the tunnel vent) and never hear 7550 fans kick in. This AVR is the coolest running with these inexpensive, super quiet fans that I've ever used. Excellent purchase for me.

Should be able to handle easily. Check to see if it gets hot after running for awhile. If it is hot do what I did and add the 2 Nexus 80mm fans to it. One on the rear center(tunnel) and the other over the HDMI board fan on the top of the 7550. I can run mine for as long I want and it never even gets warm. Best $30.00 dollars you will ever spend. You can get the fans and controller at www.coolerguys.com Gorilla glue them in place.
