We can dream, right? When I'm elected King, we'll be able to buy one of these:

My modest home home theater has five HDMI sources and just a single "legacy" component video source. I can't remember the last time I had a svideo connector in use, much less a composite video source. Who on earth needs a receiver with eight svideo/analog inputs?

It's time for receiver manufacturers to join us here in the 21st century and stop being stingy with HDMI inputs!

About the time we get up to 8 HDMI inputs, they will introduce another connector. I expect legacy connectors to start going away in the next two years.

The manufacturers don't start with a blank sheet every year. They modify existing receiver designs to save on cost. I don't think these legacy circuits are costing them (or us) too much money. That being said, an HDMI/digital audio only receiver could certainly save a substantial amount of money. That would mean NO analog video and no analog audio. I think they might than be able to give us zones that are really useful

You don't have any 7.1 analog inputs or preouts. What if you want to connect an external amp or a DVD-A/SACD player?

Plus you forgot a subwoofer output!

4 subwoofer outputs!

My mom works for Sony, and she brought home a copy of "Starhawk BETA"
I quickly slipped it into my trusty PS3, and started playing.

I love it, I think it should have the capability to send audio, video to a TV even if the receiver is on stand by just like the old cable and VCR's.

I also Think that by default it should automatically sence the original sound track and play it preperly without expanding it to multiple speakers. meaning if you a listening to a 2 channel CD, it should start in Stereo unless you set to mutichannel as a default. - I don't even know if this is a current default :-)

I think it should automatically come with Ethernet which already shows in your picture, but it should also have wireless and bluetooth.

space those binding posts a little farther apart, and it's a winner as far as i'm concerned...

well... it wouldn't hurt to have one composite/s-video out for those who use a separate small monitor as well... but only 1...

My dream would offer every type of connection in a straight line top to bottom, no more crazy digital assignments.

Input example and there would be 8 of them in a row.
HDMI on top
Component
Svideo/Compo
Optical/COAX
Analog L/R

Shoot, maybe each analog could be 5.1 with an L/R switch even.

Maybe one day they will come with more advanced bass mgmt. Slope, continuously variable x-over, phase, and all. I guess phase is easily done enough on sub, but give us enough not to have to purchase outboard bass mgmt. because I haven't yet

* Every input I will need for the next five years
* 100% glitch free HDMI; no audio sync issues, no dropouts, no inadvertant resolution changes etc.
* Every video option customizable on a per input basis; Best video noise reduction and processing currently available in a chip - Must noticably improve Comcast SD cable
* Amplifier never clips under reasonable operation
* GUI at least as good as Tivos
* Network music improved over what Yamaha current operates, easy navigation, no glitches
* Backlight on rear panel for simpler hookups

That photo is great, and it's pretty much what I've been looking to buy for the past five years.

I just wish someone would make it already.

Where do I hook up my Beta Max?

You have space in the middle for 7 balanced (XLR) outs.

It took you 20 messages to come to the design concept of how these companies work. 80% wants only the features first outlined but they can 'win' the last 20% by adding these legacy connections asked by the others in the thread they are already designed and cost very little to keep so they add them.

Its just economics, companies like denon won't design 2 machines in each price range thats just too much effort they can also cover with 1 machine.

so you end up with top models they look like this :

actually i'm surprised denon hasn't released something like i suggest yet, though the picture posted above could be a pre amp... quite easily

looking at the dvi connections i'd say that amp would showing its age now, i'd guess the amp would 5-6 years old by now, the hdmi would likely be based on 1.0 or 1.1 spec i doubt it would have hdmi 1.3a compliance

Hmmm..
A dream AVR..
Neat idea but if no pricing or budget is disclosed, there are no free rides every feature has a cost...
Kinda like a dream car...
I want to get 40 MPG, hold a family of 6, extra storage space, good acceleration, have a lifetime warranty and cost < $12K..

Just my $0.025..

m code that's a nice dream that puts the suv lovers in a rut don't it... just my 0.02 worth hey..

it would interesting to see what becomes available in the next 12 month's considering they seem to dicing alot of weight out of the new lines across all brands it's going to be interesting to see what features get cut from the new lines, as dropping weight doesn't seem to be a good sign of things to come because it's almost certain features will go missing...

I posted a older model for a reason (indeed about 5 years old). The newer models look more like this (the one i own) :

http://www.usa.denon.com/AVPA1HDCI_Large_Back.jpg

and the amp

http://www.usa.denon.com/POAA1HDCI_Large_Back.jpg

But you missed my main point they will never drop the legacy inputs as long as about 20% of the people want them in a price range why limit youself to 80% of a market if you can add legacy cheap and hit 100%.

Daniel.

if u want to be truly hardcore, i'd eliminate component and toslink altogether and "toss-in" a 5 Display ports and 5 HDMI on the front as well.

the future will largely be digital only.

to the edge of eternity and depth of infinity, stupidity knows no bound.

my dream receiver is a bit different. I actually just want a tv with enough inputs on it to not need to put a buggy receiver in the middle of my blu-ray player/or cable/ps3/xbox etc. Instead, I want a TV with a proper audio out that will be connected to some sort of amplifier that does only what it's suppose to do...sound good. Maybe a Pre a pro setup again, where the preamp does nothing but decode the audio, and when they decide to update to yet another new version of DTS or DD 13.2 or whatever, just replace the preamp - done. I sometimes swear that right now we are doing everything backwards.

I hate having to feed my video through a receiver, and hdmi just causes more confusion, bugs, and frustration with incompatibility nonsense....it's like Microsoft designed HDMI, which would explain all the bugs.

Why have any hookups? New TVs have wireless now. We just need faster hubs.

I've got to tell you man, the back of that Pre-Pro is just a joke these days. I can hardly imagine that there are even 3% of customers of such unit who use may be 1 of those 9 composite video inputs! just one example

I agree and i own it !, but that IS my point. They build these units to try to please as many people as possible. Say they make a $1000 unit, they will add all the features that the core group wants but then will it up with legacy inputs to aim for the just in case people. Its just econimics i doubt we will ever see a stripped down bare to the bones unit from a large brand.

Daniel.

PS: i did already run out of several inputs among them hdmi's
