I can get either for roughly the same price, but I'm not 100% sure which would better?

I know the 2309 has more HDMI inputs, while the other seems to have more Audio processing capabilities. The 2808 also has a better THD rating (<0.05%).

Has anybody been able to compare the two generations of receivers? Does the new 2309 have any sound calibration advantages?

I can overlook the shortage of HDMI inputs on the 2808, if the sound is better than the 2309.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.

I was wondering the same thing. Which is truly better? Also, where would you be able to get both at almost the same price? I saw the 2808 for 569, and the 2309 for 800+.

It's unlikely that you will notice any difference in sound because of a THD spec. IMHO the 2808 will do most every you need except for the lack of one HDMI. If price is a big consideration go for the 2808. My impression is the 2309 is one step down in the food chain because of the lack of audio processing but Denon wanted to have a "you have to have this feature" product to replace the 2308ci.

Although we can't talk price, I assume we can still mention where one can get things?

I can get the 2309 on eBay, BUT I do know that I risk not having the warranty.

I got my AVR888 at the big South American River place for 1/2 off of it's $750 price. That same place has the AVR2808ci for over 50% off it's original $1200. so technically I didn't say anything but you get the picture.

I don't think the AVR-888 quite compares with the 2808ci. For starters, it does not support Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD, which is a deal breaker for me. Those are two requirements I must have.

Also the 2808 uses better DACs (IMHO), DSD-1608 vs AD-AU1328.

Also the 2808 adds MultiEQ XT.

I think the AVR-988 is a better comparison to the 2808ci.

Yes, I agree, but my point was really to show you where you could get a good deal on the Denon you were looking for.

critical differences between 2808ci vs. 2309ci:

2309 advantages -
1. 2309 has 4 HDMI inputs vs. 2 on 2808
2. 2309 has the new Audyssey features (Dynamic EQ and Vol), 2808 doesn't

2808 advantages -
1. slightly more power, slightly better DAC's, slightly better audio processing with AL24 (it THEORETICALLY should sound a little better, but that's debatable)
2. Audyssey MultEQ XT vs standard MultEQ (but no Dynamic features)
3. full Pre-amp outs for all 7.1 channels (vital if you want to use as a pre/pro or add external amps)
4. can output digital (2-channel PCM) audio to Zone 2 (analog only on 2309)
5. 3-zone/3-source control (2-zones only on 2309) with video out to zone 2 (audio only on 2309)
6. more inputs (7 assignable video inputs instead of 5)

In all other respects the 2808ci should be equal or slightly better, as it is one step up in the the Denon model ladder. The 2808 is last year's 2800 series model, the 2309 is this year's 2300 series model.

If you have a higher-end HT setup or a complex install where you need maximum flexibility, the 2808 will probably serve you better. The 2800 series has more power, more inputs, more outputs, better multizone capabilities, pre-outs, etc. But for most normal setups and typical people the 2309 should be plenty of receiver.

As may this one (although its about 1909 vs 2808, same difference):

Thanks for the insight! I went ahead and bought a 4-month old 2808ci. The seller had the receipt, so I should be covered for another 20 months under the terms of the warranty.

Because I was able to find a used 2808 with warranty for $130+ less than a new 2309ci without warranty, my decision was pretty easy.

Thanks for the replies, and the links. I always love coming to these boards!

Just curious, does owning the receipt of a used AVR not void the warranty? I guess if the product wasn't registered, it might be ok. How does this work? thanks...jd

All permanently write something, read elsewhere. And you opened the 2808 receiver? You saw for yourself what's the DAC? You write that there DSD1608 installed. But I opened my Denon AVR-2808 and found DAC by Asai Kasei - AK4385 108dB 192kHz 24-Bit 2ch ΔΣ DAC. Someone may like to comment? Or I discovered America?

Stereo DAC in the receiver Denon 2808 - DAC AK4385ET! In the photo you can see well.

More DACs I have not found in open circuits. Did not climb inside and disassemble.
