I've been wanting to upgrade to new a TV and reciever for over a year now. First I'm planning to buy the new reciever. Right now I'm trying to decide between these two.

Onkyo TX-SR606
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR606...7675680&sr=1-1

Sony STRDG820
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDG820-...7675939&sr=1-1

I'll be using my reciever for watching blu-ray movies and playing games on my PS3. The main reason I wanted to upgrade my reciever was to get one that can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS MA.

I would get the onkyo if I was you the onkyo looks way better then the sony.

If you are planing on using your PS3 with the new receiver you will not get the new decoding in the receiver, The PS3 will not send a bitsteam signal out only PCM.

Really? I thought that the PS3 had an option to send bitstream audio through HDMI. But if it only send PCM audio will the reciever decode it as Dolby TrueHD or will it display as multi-channel PCM? Either way hopefully it'll sound just as good.

It does, but it only applies to lossy.

Wont be via update.. It would have to be new hardware, due to the (early adopted) SiL 9132 HDMI transmitter chip. It would need the 9134 receiver.

The PS3 is still a great BD player, especially if you use it to game.

I found zero undesirable conversions when unzipping at the PS3, vs the AVR, except for a +4dB increase when bitstreamed. When level matched, the sq has been identical to me. I did not ABX though. D/A still takes place at the AVR, so unless something is going wrong at the players end, it technically should be inaudible. The task is pretty simple.

I went with the Onkyo brand but decided to get the TX-SR705 instead of the 606. It was only $50 more. And for some reason it was also $50 cheaper to get it in silver than black.

Onkyo does not sound better than Sony. They sound the same.

"Vintage" is good for wine, not for A/V equipment.

Are you speaking in general, or in this comparison?

I certainly wouldn't say they sound the same, although I would assume they (most likely) sound "similar". Unfortunately I didn't ABX them so I really wouldn't know for sure

Hi
Should you get it next week sometimek
When you get the 706 make sure you put your PS3 on PCM or you will not be getting any true HD or DTS-HD-MA sound.
