So my little foray into setting up a sound system to work with my HTPC and Samsung LN40A750 has taken me all over the place. Let me start off my saying my HTPC is using a AMD 780G chipset which uses the DH 3200 and can send out 2.1 LPCM audio over the HDMI port. Well, after buying a Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 System and a Yamaha RX-V663 this just wasn't going to be enough.... I needed AT LEAST 5.1 LPCM over HDMI.

Anyhow, I ended up getting a ASUS EAH4550 video card that just so happens to also do 8 channel LPCM over HDMI. The problem I'm running into is it seems most, if not all, receivers don't seem to play nice with ATI cards. For example I ended up having to make a "custom" driver for my monitor in order to get the HTPC and receiver to play nice and see my LN40A750 as a HDMI device (not DVI).

The short of it is this... I'm now considering getting a better receiver, better than the Yamaha RX-V663 (perhaps a Denon 2809 or 3808) and I'm wondering if anyone happens to have a list of receivers known to play nice with ATI 4xxx video cards. By play nice I mean "just work" without any custom made monitor INFs and the like. I just want to plug my HTPC into the receiver and the receiver into the TV and have everything handshake perfectly.

Anyone know of such a list.... or can anyone confirm certain receivers to work and maybe I can start a list? Thank you.

From my experience almost all recievers work just fine with ati4800. I mean I've tried it with rxv1700 yamaha, 6190 yamaha, denon 989, hk 354 and so far no problems. One thing though your tv is it set on pc mode? Cause that makes a difference, you have to disable that or the card will assume it's a monitor, at least that's what it does with my pioneer.

alkiro,

I've never read that you had to put your TV into PC mode in order to get it to handshake properly with your HTPC/AVR... and I've read quite a bit of threads on AVS in the past week concerning HTPC usage.

Anyone else know of some receivers that just work? Please post about them or link to a list that already has this information.

I would be interested in hearing about some receivers that do this as well. Sometime in the future I would like to build an HTPC and will need a compatible receiver.
Thanks
Mike

I think he meant to make sure it's NOT in PC/DVI mode?
