Hmm...interesting. Guess I'll stick with my DG1000 for now, though.

Could some look at the sony style image of the rear panel of the DH 800 and tell me if
it looks like it is missing either the B speaker connections or the back rear surround connections. Since these new models are working with the wireless sound I wonder if they are removing the B speakers even though the specs say there is an A/B switch.
I have a 7.1 setup at home and a 2 regular stereo speakers so the A/B switch will be nice. I might have to go pick up the 820 if the 800 does not have this option.

Actually I happen to think it looks like this Samsung receiver that was part of one of their HTiBs.

I agree Crutchfiled is the best for pics. I just decided to go on ahead and pay 299 for the 820 at electronicexpress.com. Seems like every year Sony removes something from their electronics they had on the previous model.
I did not want to take the chance on waiting since Sony style removed the 820 from their website a few days ago. I like having B speakers just for music.

So STR-DH500, no audio pass thru on HDMI? What connection is 2nd best for audio?

I dont even have 5.1 set up yet so no reason to get 7.1 quality until i have the speakers.

Yeah, but it is one less thing to upgrade when you do.

STR-DH800

# Channel Power Rating : 7.1 Channel Power Rating: 110W x 7 Amp Power (8 ohms, 1KhzTHD 1.0%)

18.3 Lbs and no pre-outs!

No thanks I will pass. Rating it at 1 Khz and 1.0% THD tells us nothing about that amp section.

This statement on the STR-DH700 is completely misleading.

"Blu-ray Discâ„¢ Audio Decoding"

It does not decode Dolby True-HD and DTS-MA so it does not support "Blu-ray Discâ„¢ Audio Decoding". Just PCM decoding is not going to cover it. I hate how misleading HDMI is!

Can someone explian what the preouts do and why we need it? I'm not being smart, i just want to know why they are important.

Looks like they took out the b speaker separate connections for a bi-amp connection.
So I guess if you don't have 7.1 setup you can use those as B speakers, if you have both a 7.1 setup and an extra pair of stereo speakers you have to disconnect the back surround and connect the other speakers. I am glad I ordered the 820 model since I have a 7.1 setup and b speakers for stereo.

Pre-outs let you hook up a power amplifier for any and all of your 6/8 channels and use the receiver just as a pre-pro: a simple upgrade path. Given how underpowered the amp sections of Sony units tend to be, this is pretty important.

The preouts are for external amplifiers to power the center, surround, etc.
Some folks are not happy with the amplifer performance so they like the option of using separate power to push those high performance speakers.
Alot of the other manufactures have them built in even on lower end models but I feel they are only useful if you have some very high end speakers and a large room would you ever need the preouts. I buy the receiver for the sound quality it has built in is what we are paying for not to have accessories to connect to it for better sound with an additional amp. That is just me but everyone has their opinion. These model receivers are sony's lower end models for most folks on a budget.

I would be interested in finding out whether this years non ES flagship model the 1000 has the full real HDMI overlay that only the 5400ES and 6400ES have. I wanted to get the 4400ES this year but the lack of the real overlay made me wait.
