Sorry if you already troubleshooted this theory but I just saw your post (on the other thread ) and thought I would suggest a different train of thought. Could lead to a solve on your end.
I ran a continuity test on each individual speaker and checked for shorting in the wires, then I double checked the polarity of the wiring to each speaker. (I'm using stranded 8ohm wire that was cut to same length for each set of speakers.) No problems. I swapped HDMI cables to make sure it wasn't a bad HDMI cable. Still no difference, sound blanked after a couple of minutes. No more protection mode, but sound cuts out after a few minutes. Delay in finding the HDMI video signal starting again. Tried the DVD input again & sure enough into protection mode. Swapped the HDMI cables once again & retried the DVD input, still into protection mode.
I disconnected the receiver & now cable, TIVO & DVD all are working fine running through the TV speakers, no matter which set of HDMI cables I use.
I sent emails, no not nasty, just sarcastic, to the repair center & to Onkyo. Both responded right away. Onkyo gave me a # to call for service. 1st call to Onkyo ended up with an ESL customer service rep who couldn't figure out where to transfer me, so I was sent to the proverbial dead end, dead silence and finally a busy signal after 3-4 minutes. On the 2nd call I got a guty who wanted to tell me it wasn't his problem that I needed to call the parts guys. Finally got to a supervisor who was able to transfer me to a person. Don P. was great, he listened, told me that the service center WOULD help me. The would send a prepaid label & he was sure they would refund the 2nd shipping cost.
I sent DTR (Denver Svc Center) an email with a copy to Don P @ Onkyo & sure enough in a matter of 30 minutes I was emailed a shipping label & promised a check for the previous shipping.
Now to see if DTR can determine the cause of the problems.
I shipped the receiver back before I read your suggestion to hook it up to another system. It would have been hard to do anyway as the only friend I had with a system passed away last year after a short illness & his system has been sold.
