I thought I'd compile a massive list of receivers and pre/pros which accept digital DSD input and decode it to analog with no conversion to PCM or processing in between - for anyone interested in true "pure DSD" playback (whether that's the best solution or not).

It took me ages and what I discovered was that you can't TRULY know what's the case with a receiver/preamp unless you know the very path and design of the components and circuitry inside it - what chips are connected and how, the very pins that are used on those chips, the controllers, how the DAC operates and if it is doing so as hoped (pure DSD)!

Anyway, in a very post-modern way I've simply researched all I can and gathered everything (the info - or lack of info - from the horses' mouths, reported claims, evidence, proof etc) in the one place so that YOU can ultimately make your own conclusion. I have sorted the receiver models into two groups, ones that (supposedly ) DO have a pure DSD to analog path, and random ones that supposedly, or definitely don't. If you have any info to correct or add to what I have below please chime in with it!

Also good about this list is the usually obscure info on what DACs receivers use so it's a useful resource just for that too.


Criteria for pure DSD decoding

So the criteria I've established for a receiver to be confirmed (or at least to an extent believed) to have a 100% pure analog path, it has to have:
1. A digital DSD input (HDMI, i.LINK or DENON Link)
2. Some sort of pure DSD playback mode on the receiver whereby it (supposedly) forgoes any processing or conversion to PCM
3. A DSD-Capable DAC (that doesn't convert to a PCM signal before the analog output)
4. Whatever other info that helps us know its DSD status.

And at that point, YOU decide what your conclusion is. Some items have conflicting claims from different people and that's all the info we have.

And for the second big list of receivers (ones that don't have pure DSD decoding), it onlt needs one of the first three criteria above in order to be 100% confirmed as a NON pure a DSD receiver.


Other notes and useful links/quotes/claims/info

- PCM1792 DAC is a technically superior DSD DAC to the 1796! 1791 is worse than both...
- PCM1792 and DSD1792 ARE different but they both have the same identical DSD to analog design and capability, so if they're ever mixed up it doesn't matter if you are considering DSD to analog capability.
- BAH WHAT ABOUT DSD1791 AND PCM1791? LOL....:so much confusion:
- Some of the receiver model equivalents like Onkyo/Integra are not 100% identical with internal components but are considered equivalents and are identical in terms of DAC, and DSD processing.

FOR: I have a theory that the statement "DSD sources are converted and handled as PCM" is either a misprint or badly-written, due to inconsistencies with what the rest of the user manual says and infers. It might indeed do DSD direct to analog conversion in "DSD Direct" mode but nothing can be confirmed until someone contacts Onkyo and gets an answer from them.

I DON'T KNOW: it has a special Sony custom designed DSD DAC which is supposed to "represent the latest advancement in DSD D/A conversion. Some kind of unprecedented "no negative feedback I/V Converter" technology. Gone completely is any slight softness or distortion associate with converting DSD to analog. The output is very tight and crisp where as the XA9000ES and XA777ES are noticeably softer sounding by comparison." What actually happens, is that it converts the incoming dsd signal (via hdmi) to pcm format and processes the sound a little before converting to analog.

I'm not sure what to conclude about this receiver. Make your own conclusion about whetter this is good DSD to analog conversion or not. But it's not pure, that's for sure.

A truly substantial resource that needs a bump. Many manufacturers gloss over whether their receivers handle DSD in a pure manner, and finding information on a particular model can be very difficult. Thanks for compiling the list.

Tremendous piece of work. I may be able to add a few things.

I owned a Sony DA9000ES and have schematics. All DSD signals are internally converted to PCM prior to amplifcation.

I owned a Sony DA7100ES and have schematics. Unlike the DA9000ES this does not convert the analogue and digital audio inputs to DSD - all processing is PCM.

I have full schematics for many of the amplifiers mentioned and may be able to help with specific questions.

I'll be the first to ask, Who cares?

If you want bass management, time alignment, or room correction you're going to need to turn that precious DSD to PCM first. And if you've got the perfect room & speakers and don't need any of that you're probably not using any of the gear listed in this thread.

Interesting... I have been having audio dropouts when feeding DSD via HDMI to an Integra DHC-40.2 preamp/processor. The DHC-40.2 features "DSD Processing" but not "DSD Direct." Accordingly, would it be correct to infer that the DSD processing in this model consists of converting DSD to PCM?

When I switch the feed from DSD to PCM (i.e. the player performing the conversion before sending it to the pre/pro), the audio dropouts do not occur. Since, as you say, bass management, time alignment, and room correction are all done in PCM (and I do want all those things!), should I simply set the player to output PCM and forget about the audio dropouts?

In the September 2010 issue of the British hi-fi magazine, Hi-Fi World, there's a review of the Yamaha RX-V567 home theater receiver. In the review, the reviewer mentioned specifically that the V567 decoded DSD without switching to PCM when used with a Cambridge Audio universal player, which was set to output DSD through its HDMI output. The reviewer mentioned that the Yamaha was set to "Direct" and the playback sampling rate can be seen with the receiver's on-screen display (OSD).

Onkyo HT-RC270 verified DSD passthrough. Has the correct chip, manual is vague, but my SACD test confirms.

No mention of any of the NAD avrs, one way or the other?

I am currently playing a 5.1 SACD from my Oppo 95 via HDMI to my NAD T775 HD, and the on-screen info from the NAD advises PCM 5.1 at 88.2K. Would playing direct from Oppo to NAD via analogue outs be producing a higher level sound quality?

I suppose first of all this might depend on what sampling rate was used to produce the DSD recording in the beginning? I vaguely remember reading that most DSD recording is done at 2.something mhz, but also vaguely remember reading on recording site (may have been MA recording, not sure) that they sometimes used equipment that could sample at 5.something mhz.

To my (admittedly ageing) ears, not too much difference that I can detect., whenswitching from hdmi to analogue and back again (have to hit the pause or stop button on the player before switching as otherwise the Oppo seems to get itself into an unhappy knot if it is playing live when I do this - must have something to do with switching fromtrying to decode the disc itself or simply sending the un-coded bit-stream to the NAD)

Interested in any comments

For the record, the oppo setup in its Audio Format Setup had SACD output set to DSD

The short answer to analogue being better SQ is most likely not.smile.gif

The long version:

The background in brief:

DSD uses sigma-delta 1-bit at 2.82MHz, which is different technology from PCM using 24-bit. Apples and oranges. For editing DSD is converted to high sample PCM 384kHz or similar or even higher, and back for authoring SACD.

Some have stated that native DSD is roughly equivalent to PCM 20-bit 100kHz. Someone else has shown graphically that for a pure tone DSD and 96kHz analogue waveforms are very close. I can't remember the sources but these are from the early days of SACD.

Native DSD recordings capture ultra-sonic frequencies (20kHz to 100kHz) which some argue are detrimental to the audible band, unless recording engineer filter these out.

Most SACDs are from original PCM recordings, some even 44.1kHz (CD quality), a lot are from 24/96. Only a few are higher sample rates. Some are from analogue but the medium has it's own limitation to start with, such as limited dynamic range.

I've argued that DSD decimated to PCM at high enough sample rate, 176.4kHz (in Sony BDPs) is for all intense and purpose sufficient and has no audible difference. If you believe sample rates make an audible difference, then a 96kHz recording would suffer some loss by conversion to DSD then back to 88.2kHz during playback. Decimation to 176.4kHz would be more than sufficient for original 96kHz recording.

Listening comparison between DSD and PCM is generally difficult to do because equipment set-up needs to be changed and this is usually not possible without some delay. Plus the need to ensure everything else (volume, processing or lack of) stays the same.

So there's really nothing much to be gained from preserving DSD signal all the way.

On the other hand, sending DSD to AVR have the following potential serious pitfalls:

1. Direct DSD-analogue decoding doesn't give you the option to do bass management and other processing like room correction. Unlike movie tracks, there is no uniform standard how the LFE is mixed for SACD. Without BM you need to have 5 full-range speakers and a sub, or as originally intended, 6 full-range speakers.

2. Even if you want BM and RC via PCM intermediate steps, you seldom know what the AVR does in terms of sample rate conversion. The Onkyo 606 is suspected of downsampling DSD to 44.1kHz PCM eek.gif. You seldom know what goes on inside AVRs as there's usually no way to tell.

3. Recently it's been found that some Denon AVRs do not apply sub boost to the DSD stream.

I was looking at the latest firmware upgrade for the Onkyo 414 and 515 home theater receivers, and Onkyo mentioned the firmware upgrade will allow for these receivers to support DSD. I don't know whether this means these receivers will now be able to decode DSD to analog or simply that they can process an incoming DSD bitstream.
