The sound of the Pio is warmer for sure. Very clear. But somehow it doesn't sound as lively/punchy as my old 85 wpc Yamaha. This is especially true with the center channel with dialogue. I've tried turning up the db of the center, turned on dialogue enhancement, the overall surround field is spacious with loud LFE (turned it down to -5db) but the details/dialogue aren't as localized/pronounced as I'm used to. Maybe I just prefer the Yammy sound after all these years?

Can anyone tell me how to access the C.Width setting? maybe I'd prefer a narrower center field. I sit about 7 feet from the center channel speaker.

Also, The Dark Knight Blu-ray is playing in Dolby Digital. Why not True-HD or newer format? I set it right in the Bluray disc menu. I'm guessing it's the audio output on my Panny Blu-ray player?

I like the 1020 so far. Since i'm a silver BB rewards member (bought a 58V10 there too) i have 45 days to return the unit, no questions asked. I'm contemplating exchanging the receiver for an Onkyo 708/808. Not sure yet. I'd love to have Pandora right on the unit, front HDMI for my laptop... I do love Pioneer products. This is actually the cheapest receiver i've ever purchased (Denon 5803,B&K 307,B&K Ref50/Ref200.7,Elite 56Txi)..

Hi Chip,
The 1020-k weighs about 22 lbs, thats 5 less than my 10 year old Yamaha. Am I being paranoid or does the 1020-K lack some power? I was expecting more at 110wpc. It does have a clear sound though. I think I jumped on it because of the extensive features, but I'm thinking of going back to Yammy and spending $800 on last year's RX-V1900...supposedly the nwer Yammy's aren't as beefy.

Finally purchased my first AV receiver. I hooked up to Def Tech SSA-50 sound bar and pro sub 800. This may have been posted earlier, but the recommendations for the sub is 120 crossover. my options seem to be 100 or 150 in the pioneer set up. Any advice? def tech CSupport said set to 15O on receiver and on back of sub. Real basic, but does anyone care to explain this?

21 has more power, but the 1020 is more versatile.

I did notice that model is on the way. How does the 1120 compare to the elite 21/23txh? Aside from features, what about sound quality?

It powers my Focal Sib XL's (8ohm-lifestyle) just fine. They are easy to drive. I just sold my 10 year old PSB Stratus Silveri setup that i had in my basement HT room. The PSB's (4ohm mains)would've never worked with the 1020.

Hi,
Some surround sound issues:

The unit creates a big sound field which is quite loud, but if I turn down the volume, the speech/dialogue is quiet/muffled. I tried turning up the center channel volume, and played with dialogue enhancement, but no luck. There is a feature that spreads out some of the center info to the fronts, but it is not displayed as an option in the audio parameters menu so I don't know how to linit that info to the center, if that would help.
I am using a Panny blu-ray player, and the 1020 is driving my Klipsch synergy 5.1 setup (sc-1 center, sf-1 fronts, quintet II rears, polk psw350 sub).
I am frustrated because my 10 year old Yamaha rx-v595 seems to do a better job with making all details crisp and audible for cinema.

Advice? Many of you have been helpful so far...thanks!

I got my 1020 yesterday and set up my Harmony One remote to find that the discreet on/off codes are *not* there yet. Are these expected soon? I don't have the time or energy to spend with Logitech/Harmony support which from prior expereince counts as the very worst support shop I've ever worked with.

ciper, thx for doing the legwork :-)

The 1020 itself is a nice unit and the iPhone app is very slick IMHO.

I was trying to watch a video that has ACC audio but there was no sound. My media player was set to ACC digital then I set it to ACC analogue (PCM) and of course there was sound. My question is doesn't this receiver decode digital ACC via HDMI or do I need to use coax?

I have this set up with 2 polk 70's and a cs2. When it went thru the test I got sound out of my cs2 but now when I try and play music or watch a movie I don't get any sound out of the cs2, just the 70's. Any suggestions?

figured it out, amazed how much more clean sounding this receiver is and really powers my klipsch speakers better than my old hk did; considering im running reference IV; rf-63 front speakers, rc-62, and rb-61 surrounds

Well, that is going to depend on what you are playing and what features are enabled in the receiver. If you are sending a multichannel digital sound source to the receiver it should downmix to the three speakers. If you are only sending a stereo source and don't have PLIIx turned on you will only get sound from the LR speakers.

If dialog in a movie is not coming from the center channel you definitely have something set wrong - mulitichannel soundtracks have most dialog in the center channel.

Has anyone had luck using dual banana plugs in the back? I'm hesitant to order them, before I've heard that others have used them with success.

If so, which ones?

If only singles, which ones are you using?

any ideas? i connect via at&t dsl modem - not the fastest, but still decent speed. I am able to connect via my laptop and either media player or Itunes to every one of those same stations (same URL also), so I know it's the right URL.

Anybody have any ideas? what types of internet URLs have you been able to successfully connect to? The ones I've entered have trouble connecting... are their only certain types that are valid?

I'm using singles, these closed screw ones from monoprice

They work, and I wouldnt go with anything else.

Am I doing anything wrong if I have to turn the volume on my 1020 up to +2 when I am watching an action movie? Don't get me wrong, at +2 I get very loud sound, but just didn't know if it was unusual to have to go this high. I am only listening through 3 front speakers (all Klipsch Reference and so very efficient) with no sub or rears yet. My room does have 18 ft ceilings and is open on 3 ends and is about 20x14. Does anyone else have to crank the volume this high, especially with such efficient speakers?

Those are considered banana plugs? They don't have the typical center bulge of most banana plugs.

Yes, they are. They function the same way really.. See the gap in the saw-tooth design- spread slightly wider than the port, they squeeze in to fit snuggly... just like what you are used to using 14awg AQ wire goes in the back instead of middle..
I have a bunch of the ones you pictured on the left too. also have a bag of the even more expensive AQ's that are silver and look like this -

I use these silver ones on the stereo setup in my garage. They are a bit of a bltch...tight fit.

First post. Hi, folks. Found you while researching the VSX-1020-K as a possible upgrade for my system.

Finally sold my classic Sony STR-DA777ES last night so that I could move into the HDMI world, clean up all the cables behind my A/V setup, etc, etc. I'll miss that 50+ lbs monster, but I'm excited to see how this feature-packed Pio fills its footprint, given how much technology has changed since I bought the Sony. I know the Pio won't have the same power that I'm used to, but I've been living in apartments for so long that I've barely tapped what the Sony can do since I've owned it (about 10 years).

I ordered the 1020 last night, right after I sold the Sony, so I should be receiving it in about 3 days. I just cleared out all my now unnecessary component cables, toslink cables, and my HDMI switcher, and now I have a much clearer slot into which I can place the receiver when it arrives!

Ditto. I also found a 10% off coupon online, which is why I committed to buying it last night instead of buying it at B&H or elsewhere. Unlike Best Buy and other approved distributors, though, I don't believe New Egg is an authorized distributor, or whatever the term is. I can't remember how exactly this affects service and warranty (and it sure isn't as easy to get repaired this way as walking into your local BB), but I couldn't resist the deal. After the sale of my Sony and some accessories, I'm now barely a hundred bucks out of pocket on the 1020.

If this is TMI on the $ front, someone let me know what to edit, and I'll moderate my post. Thanks!
