The neutered 1008 is nearly a joke to me. What do you need to spend to get XT, $2,000, or close to it? Onkyo, once value king in AVR's, seems to be letting the ship sail, sadly.

James

Actual phone call (see pic to left):

Tech (responding to laughter): "I'm sorry sir, did I miss something?"

Me: "Yeah, a case of Diet Mountain Dew walking across my living room."

For me, it is actually the fact that I can control the volume of my zone 2 amp with the receiver as the pre-amp output is variable. I think zone 3 is the same.

Zone 3 line out (that's what the extra audio out above is, I think)
"Bi-directional remote setup via GUI"

I honestly don't know if any of that is worth an extra $200. 808 seems almost unnecessary as I don't see an extra 25W/channel making a huge difference and if you're spending this much cash on receivers, you might as well just buy a fancy Harmony remote to simplify your remote stuff instead of buying this for the GUI remote setup. I guess the third zone out would be something some people could appreciate, so that's probably the thing that makes the 808 stand out in my eyes. If I needed a third zone.

I favor the 708 between the two and if I need more power down the line, I'd just get a separate amp and plug it into the pre-outs.

I believe the 808 has an "activity" based remote -- so its like a harmony where you can press "watch a movie" and it will switch all your components for you. Until the 808 ships and someone can review just how well that works its probably up in the air if the 808 remote can replace a harmony or not. If I were looking at spending 150-200 for a harmony one or 200 to upgrade from the 708 to the 808 I would probably go for the 808 if the remotes were close enough, because you get the same remote features, plus a few bonuses on the receiver.

does the 808 look like it has legacy 6cg analog inputs (where it says bd/dvd) on the rear apron:

I agree on spending the extra $200 to get some of the upgrades but what exactly is the difference between Onkyo's normal remote and there Bi-Directional Preprogrammed RI Remote Control. I saw their definition on there website:

Selected remote controllers offer the convenience of controlling a wide range of other devices connected to a compatible A/V receiver. You can choose your connected devices from an on-screen list and pre-program your desired settings for each device; the receiver itself can then send these settings automatically to the remote controller. Furthermore, you can set up macro presets for up to four activity modes, which can be controlled via mode-key LEDs on the remote controller. A single button-press of My Movie, for example, can simultaneously turn on the receiver, display, and DVD player to your pre-programmed settings and start playing a disc automatically.

And looking at the 808's and 708's owner manuals and they look exactly alike....

Any help on this would be great ( about to place a pre-order on one of these bad boy's) Thanks!!!!

2 fans? anyone own onkyos can say about how many feet back until you cannot hear them? do they come on/off as it needs them, or always on?

the other thing between these two is that the 708 is 27+ lbs, the 808 is 40+lbs. that's a bigger weight difference than I personally would have thought bet. the two... the amp is that much larger?

I wonder if the Pure mode is on the USA units.

It shows up on the EU models:

European 708

On the spec sheet of the USA model it shows only direct:

US 708 Specs

I can no longer find the 708 at ABT is that still available?

Thanks,

Rich

if you check the photos for the front of both there is still the button for pure audio. I've noticed the spec sheets aren't terribly accurate in every respect...reading the specs in the owners manual will probably give you a more detailed look.

That makes sense and the images do show the pure button.
Since Onkyo has difficulty posting accurate information, you never know which is right. That said, I suspect it still had pure mode.

I was expecting onkyo to continue using the HQV Reon-VX Chip on their 2010 HDMI 1.4 recievers.

Farudja sucks for upconvertion right?

WRAT technology and discrete amp construction for cleaner sound, both have this... for a moment i thought maybe the 808 did but the 708 didnt. so, still cant figure out the weight difference for just a small output wattage difference, and the bigger price diff.

I'm looking for a new av receiver to replace an old 696 which has problems with the speaker relay switches, and I'm seriously considering the 708 since it fits the budget and features I'm looking for.

I first considered the Denon 3310 which allegedly has a high frustration factor, the Onkyo 807 which is pretty quirky with network and hdmi, the 1007 which is a great machine but overkill for my system.

I'm recently looking at the 180 because of the price, build and network capability, but I'm not sure if it suffers from some of the similar problems the 807 has. The 708 appears to be a well balanced receiver and has network and usb which is what I'm after. Hopefully it will be something that works well directly out of the box.

With the deep discount abt.com is offering I'm sure that there will be a long wait time to ship. I would rather pay more and get my receiver fast.

The 708's are not available at Amazon. You just pay more for the pre-order.

They aren't available anywhere currently. My point is, when they are released more people will have taken advantage of the abt.com discount which could mean a wait time for them to fill the orders.

I bought the 708 from a local AV shop yesterday (June 26), so they're available, at least in some stores.
