SC-37 problem

On the front of my display I used to see the little speaker lights lit. The ones that show the fronts, center, surrounds, and sub all working. I just recently got directv and noticed the other day that all the little speaker lights were off and i now see something to the right of the speaker indicators for the Phase Control stuff on now.
Did I accidentally change some setting or is the directv box doing this by default.

Maybe? If the input is different that could change the setup. You should try to set it back to THX cinema then make sure you don't have your B speakers on make sure that is off so your main room has use of all the channels. That's all I have at the moment. Also double check the output of the DTV box make sure it is setup to output the audio correctly.

Well actually nothing different was done or changed. The only thing I did was go from an AT&T Uverse box to a DirecTV box. Same HDMI cable and input. Something must just be different on the DTV box.
And I never had it on the THX stuff. I have always just listened to it on the advanced surround setting on either the action or drama setting and always noticed my little speaker icons but they are gone now even though all the speakers are playing properly.

The SC-37 is still one of the best receivers. Who needs these new gimmicky features when you have sound quality. Same for the Onkyo 805.

Hi mrjayd, speaker icons missing using other source as well? Maybe Phase Ctrl was pressed while in receiver mode.

Agreed, at least partially. The AM/FM tuner in mine is garbage, has been since day 0. A free-to-me Yamaha T50 is significantly better and a under $50 Marantz ST-59 is even better than that, provides a sound source worthy of the amplifiers. This kind of makes its receiver status a bit suspect. The Internet radio sound is barely OK, but its interface is extraordinarily bad. Internet radio sound is much worse than a decent FM tuner.

I don't think I ever even used the tuner or internet radio on any of my surround sound receivers that I ever owned. I just want my sound for my TV and movies and don't really care for anything else. I guess I didn't really need all the features of the SC-37 but when I bought it I got it for a steal and just wanted all the power....

+1
We still have the SC-35 as the centerpiece of our HT.
I would love to keep it and somehow add Atmos processing (and an outboard amp or two)...

I too wish there was someway to add Atmos to my SC37? I love my unit ,and don't want to part with it any time soon? I have been looking at the Sc 89 only be cause the Sabre2 Dac that's in it. And that its a 32 bit also ,but upgraded,so?? Im more of an audiophile than movies, and I bet the 89 sounds really good with that Sabre DAC? Wonder if its worth ???

I just made the transition to a sc85 from a sc35...yes, very much worth it. You will still get a good dollar value for your used unit and apply that to the new unit and its a great addition to your system. The ess dac is spectacular.

There's really no reason to get the newer AVR's unless you need the features. As bench test shows, the power ratings actually went down after the 2010 models. Yes they still sound good of course. 10 to 20 watts is not a big deal. But it you can see how good the ICEamps models were. Each year after they were released the power ratings actually went up!

I'm slow?lol. I didnt get the last part about the power having went down since 2010 and up? Please clarify,as I'm interested? I wander how much a diff there is with the sound of the SABRE 2 Dac ? I can't audition here at these BB ? I love the way mine sounds ,do wish there was a cost effective way somewhat of putting more depth and clarity than already exists? Can't have enough of a good thong can we? I cant???

The multichannel performance. Since the first models of the SC series the power ratings with 5 to 7 channels inscreased every year until the last models SC-35 and 37-

http://www.soundandvision.com/conten...-labs-measures

The receivers after that without the ICE amps never inscreased the ratings.

What do you mean you want more depth and clarity? Is the sound not good enough to you? You can get a separate amp if you feel you need more power.

Yeah. I was showing him starting with the first models and they got even better after that.

Depends on the speakers and size of the room. Not everyone needs it.

If you mean where can you get a separate AM/FM tuner, Ebay might be your best place to find one. hardly anyone makes new tuners. NAD makes one for about $400, might be on my list if my current used search does not work out. I am going through the same process, trying several tuners to see which has the best FM sound and good AM reception.
So far, a Yamaha T50 has the best AM reception with somewhat harsh FM and a Marantz ST-59 has the best FM sound. One or two more on the way to try. The Marantz has a half-decent AM section, but very nice FM. Used ones are in the $50 range, but most do not include the remote. Harmony codes are not complete, need an original remote to learn codes for it to work properly.
Almost any separate tuner will be better than the on-board one in the SC-37, pretty nasty.

I was speaking towards the RF for the remote on the receiver end.

Probably not, do not think the HDMI implementation on the SC-37 has enough bandwidth. I have found that the best way to hook up an OPPO 93 is to use HDMI1 directly to the TV and HDMI2 to the SC-37 for sound, cuts down HDMI handshake time and interruptions caused by (I think) the digital anti-copy garbage. You might find that true with an OPPO 103.

Nice recommendation SpaceDave? I can c how this could b effective? I'm now having renewed interest in HIFI in 30 yrs? I've been building a system for the past yr,and with more input into the HT side ,but I have found that I still enjoy analog very much. So after reading all the reviews on OPPO brand ,and the wonderful reviews? So after getting the feedback from everyone here on this forum has convinced me to get the 103 Darbee edition to add to my system? I'm really looking forward to listening to the analog side of the player. Should b great fun for days to come from what I can understand?
And thanks Bill for being patient ! Said I was new? Lol..

Note if you use room correction built into the SC-37, and you should IMO, then you might as well use the HDMI output of the Oppo for audio as well. Then you can also try out some video music productions (concerts), SACDs, etc.
