I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR5008 from Newegg in September of 2010 knowing that this receiver would deliver great sound for years to come. What a shocker when connecting the Onkyo TX-NR5008 no sound from my Martin Logan Aerius i's that I treasured for years. After thoroughly checking connections resetting the receiver I was persuaded by a Onkyo tech to drive it to the nearest shop for diagnosis. They kept the receiver a month and found no apparent problems. The receiver did work after connection. However I knew it had to be a problem. With the device working let well enough alone. However over the next few years I watched this forum and noticed the problems with the hdmi boards begin to appear. My problem began anew just about every 4 or 5 months no sound or intermittent audio. Finally no sound and greyed out menus started to appear. Which meant I could not conect to the internet or receive updates. This was insane. I called Onkyo which is now 4 years later and expected to hear the worse. To my shock and awe I was instructed to be patient while they would send me a postage free box to ship my unit to Onkyo for repair. I'm in a state of shock! Proactive customer service exists...will keep you all updated on the progression. Any comments with similar experience would be appreciated. Please keep the FORUM alive it is a major help. No problem is too small or too large that cannot be shared.

To whom it may concern my Onkyo TX-NR5008 has been returned to active duty. The hdmi board has been replaced and the osd, internet access and radio features are back online. Thanks to ONKYO customer care and repair for taking good care of my needs for service.

Quick return from Onkyo for a one time honoring of out of warranty warranty service. Back up and wondering how long hdmi board will last this time around.

Hey guys, I know this subject has been touched on a few times, but I wanted to give another option for using AMPS with the Onkyo 5008 or with none zone 1 trigger AVR’s.

I believe there is a work around to use the zone 2 for a trigger/s

Here is another way.

I bought an Emotiva ET3, and I am using a ‘USB to 3.5mm’ cable instead of the 3.5mm cable that came with the device to trigger my external amps.

I simply plug the new cable(USB to 3.5mm) I have into the back(or front) USB slot of my Onkyo 5008, and plug the 3.5mm end into the ET3. There is enough power coming from the USB to trigger the ET3, which triggers the selected amps I am using(which happens to be 3 separate external amps).

I’m not sure you would want to call this a work around, but it works nicely.

Maybe I should create a thread, and let everyone else who isn’t using an Onkyo 5008.

My 5008 just developed the HDMI board fail/no sound AGAIN. It's already been replaced (the board, not the receiver) once. Contacted the service center and they said bc it's out of warranty I need to go through Onkyo first to get them to authorize the repair.

Ugh. Hopefully I can convince them to send me a replacement, even if it's a refurb, rather than service this one again.

Have you guys gotten yours repaired under the relatively recent recall program? There's another thread here on it. I found it after I posted in this thread. Apparently a bad set of chips caused the issue. They didn't diagnose it and get clean chips until some time later in 2013. So apparently any repairs before then were just ticking time bombs. Now they send you a box, packing material, and pre-paid label to send it back to them for repair and, once done, the warranty goes all the way to 2018. Mine is on the way to Onkyo now.

Got a link to this? I had mine repaired in... 2012? Or was it 2011? I can't even recall when I got the 5008. I think it was in Nov/Dec 2010, it developed the HDMI board problem about 18 months later, i.e. first symptoms around July 2012. Sent in twice around Sep/Oct (they mistakenly put in a 3008 board without the rear USB port the first time).

Put some bigger fans from coolerguys.com on it when I got it back and it's been trouble free so far, but if there's a new recall + extended warranty, you'd better believe I'm in.

Here's the thread link:

Onkyo acknowledges failed units and extending warrranties until 2018

The first post has a link to the page at Onkyo. You basically enter you s/n and it tells if you're eligible. Good luck!

I think maybe they were asking for the recall thread to be stickied?? I think that would be more useful. Not sure why a specific model thread would need a sticky. Especially one that is four years old?

I got my 5008 back from HDMI board repair in June, finally getting around to setting my theater room up at the new house. Then I realized that I misplaced my Audyssey microphone. Can someone please take a look at the one they have and tell me the model number? I want to make sure I buy the right one.

If you have one sitting around that you don't need, please let me know.

I have an extra one for my defunct 807, that you're more than welcome to...I have no way of knowing what part numbers are for which AVR, though.

If you check the Audyssey thread, there's an FAQ that lists the Audyssey mics.

I'm in Portland, OR. I'll gladly pay for shipping though. If it's the silver tower looking mic then that's the one.

Yeah, its the silver model. According to this...they're pretty much all the same for multiple years/models. I did verify here, on Onkyo's site to make sure. (plugged in models from different years, always comes back as 245044.)
I'll check and make sure they have the same numbers on the one for my 818.

Hi AVS Forum Users,

For those affected with the HDMI no Audio issue we have a special service program setup to repair the units affected in warranty or not.

Please follow the link below:

http://www.onkyousa.com/Support/service_info.php

There will be instances where the repair portal will not be able to assist in the repair of your unit, we ask that you give us the opportunity to hear your concerns and perhaps offer resolution by emailing us at askonkyo@us.onkyo.com. Please include your contact information along with the affected units serial number.

My unit already had the no audio problem several years ago, was sent to an authorized repair facility as directed by Onkyo USA, and is currently functioning normally. Has my TX- NR3008's warranty period already been extended as part of the program stated in the link above? If it has not already been extended, what do I need to do to extend the warranty?

I did that, and the site says that my receiver is eligible for the program, but it also says "This program is for Onkyo USA customers who are currently experiencing the loss of audio or network capabilities on their receiver." Unless I missed it, it does not say that my warranty was extended when my 3008 was repaired several years ago. I just want to be sure my receiver is covered in the future if the same problem occurs again...like it did to several people here.

That's why you add your serial number. Follow through with the procedure, until you see that you are covered, or not. My guess is: Yes.
