This is something joerod mentioned a few weeks back that was possable. I tried the denon 4311 between selling my 5007 and getting a 5008 and did not care for it. My reasons were explained in detail a while back. The biggest improvement to me was the upgrade to xt32 and the ability to go heights and wides together unfortunately to do that you have to connect the wide speakers to the back terminals and then if you want to use backs you have to switch back. Hopefully Onkyo can rectify this foolishness with the firmware upgrade, well see. all else with unit is fine with me.
William,

You are right about this being business. I think I'm set for the next couple of years with my recent acquisitions. My listening and viewing needs are simple since I basically only listen and watch shiny discs. This was my first major AVR acquisition (used Marantz SR7002) in almost 10 years. I am glad to see you are still enjoying your 5008. Audyssey MultEQ XT32, the ability to do 9.2 or 11.2 (Denon AVR-A100) and HDMI 1.4a (though not currently interested in 3D) were compelling enough reasons to upgrade. These all seemed like major advances in my opinion.

I am curious to here some opinions on the local dealers view of Onkyo. I was set to purchase the 3008 and went to the local store to check price (knowing it would likely be way too high!) Even though they carry onkyo, they were strongly advising against and recommended the 4311 or 7005. Here is why:

1. Problem with reliability since change to lead free solder. (obviously the 4311 has issues too though)

2. Sluggish audio response. (new one to me!)

3. Underpowered compared to specs (most avr do this when all powered afaik)

The 3008 i am looking at will go with 7 kef 9000 inwalls, and likely an emotiva amp.

Vieralink does not seem to be working so I cant even use the TV remote to adjust the volume.

You mentioned that the IR conflict is a problem with current 3D tech. Does this apply to all makes or just onkyo because if not I will simply return and choose another make.

Thanks

No volume control on the receiver? Did you try the BIG dial/knob on the right side of the receiver? That doesn't work?

As far as which devices have IR conflicts with each other, it's difficult to say as there are different displays (with different 3D emitters) as well as different avr's with their different remotes.

You could try asking both in the Panasonic TV threads and in the threads of whichever other avr you might be considering if anyone else has had problems using the avr remotes when the VT25 3D emitter is active.

Might also want to pose the question here to any other VT25 + 3008/5008 if they also have problems using the Onkyo remote when the VT25 is displaying 3D. If they do, then it's just an incompatibility between the 2. If other VT25 owners have no problems, then it could be your Onkyo that has a problem.

the 5 has the toroidal, "FINEST" Burr-Brown and a meaningless 5watts more power.

Id like to know if its worth shelling out the extra money for a 5008 as well.
Doesn't the 3008 have a toroidal PSU ?

+1

Is there truly a (big difference) difference (when using external amps and an htpc)?

Your dealer doesn't know what he is talking about. All three statements are not true. He makes way more money by selling you a Denon. Read the professional review at Home Theater.

The main difference is pride of ownership for those that want the best. It is unlikely you will hear the difference. Denon did the same thing with their 4311, offering the A100 with even less difference, for $500.00 more.

no way. However external amps are $$$$, especially 9 channels

Are you a 3008 owner?

Question: How can I watch one hdmi source and listen to another? I like to listen to SACD on my oppo while I'm on my PC through the 3008, but it doesn't seem to allow it.

Never had this problem on the 905 and it is not my speakers shorting as I can play music etc loud , just TRUE HD so far......

In conclusion to why this happened since I first posted the above .
This problem solved today. I had my center speaker set to full band on my old 905, and did the same on the 5008. However using DYNAMIC EQ and FULLBAND on the 5008 didnt mix. Changed my center from fullband to 60hz and the film played fine ( as well as a couple of others movies I had problems with in certain scenes ) I never really should have had it set to FULLBAND in the first place . Movie stays on without DYNAMIC EQ !!! So in this case my center speaker was to blame 99% certain as I have run tests all day !! Anyway thats my conclusion !!! Just thought I would post and say thanks to everyone that has tried helping me with this annoying issue !!

as said above you cant. the 2nd source has to be ANALOG. These are the shorting comings of most receivers. There are some higher priced units that can do this.

Schuyler,

The price you see today is Newegg's weekend price. When you stated it went down another $200.00 I was expecting to see it for under $1,500.

This 3008 receiver is massive, I don't think it will fit on my tv stand. Right now I have a Denon avr 1910, is there any other "quality" receivers that is about the same dimensions as my 1910?

I had a similar issue, the height is fine (I believe my shelves give me 9.5" vertically), but I hadn't considered the length of the 3008... so it's sticking a good 4-5" out from the front of the stand

The front feet are just barely (and only partially) on the stand.

Yea, I just measured the depth and I cant fit the 3008 there. I guess ill just keep my 1910.

Seems a shame because the 3008 is in an entirely different league.
