Marantz appears to have some very competitive mid-range receivers out soon. They have certainly pushed featureset (abt chips with digital video scaling, 6 hdmi for the 6005).
Traded emails this morning with Marantz Sales Rep who confirmed it will be shipping this month.
Now debating whether the 6005 is worth the extra $200.
Let's say I set front to small, sub to LFE+Main, and crossover to 80hz which is what you suggested.
In normal modes, front signals above 80hz will be sent to front speakers, front signals below 80hz and all LFE signal will be sent to sub.
In 2 channel direct modes, front signals above 80hz will be sent to front speakers, front signals below 80hz will be sent to sub. There is no LFE to worry about.
Is my understanding right? This setup should be the best compromise.
In direct modes, the phase adjustment is disabled. So both front speakers and the sub receives the signals with the same phase. This might cause slight out of phase between fronts and sub since they are not in the same distance. In audyssey setup each channel's phase is adjusted to match their distances.
I'm thinking to do the following:
First, in direct modes, manually adjust the phase control on the sub to obtain the highest output (with a mic and REW).
Then in normal modes, manually adjust the audyssey setting and change the distance of the sub to match the fronts.
Am I too clinical? In my setup the distance difference between fronts and sub is just 50cm. So even without adjusting the phase it probably still be ok?

I've been a satisfied 6005 owner for a few years. I have 2 issues that I would like to sort out.
1) The range of the remote is only about 12 feet. I have a seating area that is about 16 feet away The unit is in the corner on an open shelf. The remote doesn't work at that range. All the other components do work at 16 feet. What is the best way to extend the range of the remote?
Can I get away with a single extender plugged into the back flasher in jack?
2) The speakers pop when I turn on the unit for the first time of the day. After that they don't pop. I have a 5.1 setup with separate outlaw 2200 amps for the fronts and left. The sub and the surrounds are run from the 6005. Everything is pluggged into a couple surge protectors on the same 2 outlets. I just moved 2 months ago and it did it also at my previous house.
I just bought a SR5005. I have my Oppo connected with HDMI and the 7.1 analog. If I want to play music using the 7.1 analog connections, does anyone know how I would select analog?
Change the INPUT MODE for that source to "7.1 CH Input"; however, note that most prefer using HDMI as using the multi analog inputs will disable Audyssey.
Do I go into the menu to change that, or just do it on the remote? Thank you. I set up the receiver manually, I didn't use Audyssey. I may try it eventually but this is my 4th AV receiver and I feel that I can set it up the way I like it manually.
Highly unlikely your manual setup will equal the dozens of EQ control points used by Audyssey unless you are using professional EQ equipment. You can cycle through the various audio modes by pressing the "A/D" button on the remote .....
Thank you, very helpful. I may give Audyssey a try. With my Denon 2311 the Audyssey didn't work and Denon Cust. Service told me it was because my speakers had built in subs.
Not sure what "doesn't work" means to you, other than you perhaps preferred no Audyssey vs. Audyssey. And the fact that your speakers have powered subs is no reason it wouldn't work as well so that CSR was ill informed about how Audyssey works. Ensure you use either a camera tripod or ideally a mic boom stand when taking the mic measurements, and if you haven't already, review the Audyssey 101/FAQ Guide linked in the Audyssey thread.
The Audyssey literally didn't work, it didn't show up on the screen and it made no adjustments whatsoever. But, now that I have the Marantz I may try it. However, my wife and I listened to the Marantz for the first time tonight and played SACD, DVD Audio, HDCD, and regular CDs and we were blown away. All music was played through my Oppo 980h and I switched back and forth between HDMI and 7.1 analog. For SACD and DVD Audio, plus HDCD, I thought the analog sounded better. But analog or HDMI, the sound was by far the best I've ever had. Although I'm a Denon fan, the 2311 wasn't even remotely close to this sound. The best sound I had prior was when I had the JVC RX-DP10VBK, which was JVC's flagship AV receiver. I had a Denon 3910 CD player at that time and the JVC did a great job at playing DVD Audio through the 7.1 analog connections but when playing regular CDs it was good but not exceptional, a little better than the Denon 2311. But the SR5005 plays regular CDs better than any receiver I ever had. No more ear piercing highs when playing regular CDs loud. Prior to today I had been disappointed in the Oppo 980 except for when I was playing SACD or DVD Audio but now it sounds great and I don't regret getting rid of my Denon 3910. The SR5005 is amazing. I played a few songs from The Best of Graham Parker and The Rumour tonight and that cd has very poor sound, and even that sounded good.
I set up Audyssey last night. I'm a little confused. When I go into the crossover frequency menu, it reads ADVANCED, Front 60 HZ, Center 40 Hz, Surround 40 HZ. Where is the sub frequency? When set to manual, the only thing I saw on this screen was the sub which I had set to 80 Hz.
Another thing I'm a bit confused about, I have two different music players, an Oppo 980 and a Sony 400 disc cd player. When I play the Sony I'd like to be able to play it through either analog or Optical. I have both plugged in. But when I try the A/D button on the remote it only toggles between 7.1 and analog, not digital. Any suggestions?
1. The sub doesn't have a crossover frequency (ie. the speakers are crossing over to the sub), rather the LPF for LFE should be reset from 80Hz to 120Hz to allow the full LFE signal to pass through to the sub.
2. In order to use that A/D button, each input must be assigned or using the same source name.
I do have the LPF for LFE set to 120. I have DEF TECH speakers with the 300 watt built in subs. I believe that with these speakers the Audyssey did set it up correctly. The Audyssey did improve the sound on movies. We were impressed. Thanks for the help.
I've been thinking about it. The marantz sr5005 only has one subwoofer out so I'd have to have dual splitters to go from that to the three subs (two in speakers and dedicated).
Correct. But the other option would be to simply use the dedicated sub with the FL/FR speaker crossovers set to 40Hz or 60Hz as the dedicated sub would likely handle the < 40Hz frequencies much more effectively then would your FL/FR speakers.
I had a strange incident yesterday with my 2 y.o. SR6005 . I use it in stereo setup with DefTech Mythos STSs (300W internal sub). I recently decided to buy Mythos Gem speakers as surrounds. They arrived yesterday afternoon. I was thinking about replacing my current mainstream BD player with OPPO105 and eventually SR6005 too with more high end components like Emotiva or Outlaw amps. Anyway it seems that Marantz somehow sensed that and that did not like getting surround speakers attached either (more load to drive) and suddenly shutdown amps yesterday (after I unpacked Gems).
That is how it happened. I decided to relax and do A to B test of different versions of ELP Tarkus from the 3 disc Delux box set I recently bought from Amazon UK (2 CDs - original version and new remixed stereo and DVD-Audio stereo version). I loaded my DVD/SACD player and BD player with discs and started switching inputs (DVD/SACD over stereo and BD over HDMI in pure direct). After while when I switched to BD player and pressed play button no sound came out. Frustrated I unplugged Marantz and plugged back - did not help. Then I saved settings to memory and reset processor (turn OFF AVR, hold AUTO and SURROUND MODE front panel buttons, turn ON AVR and release AUTO and SURROUND MODE after display starts flashing, restore setting). Did not help. But there still was a sound on HP amps. I tried different things - did not help. Detached and attached FR speaker. Did not help.
I was ready to give up and call Marantz for warranty claim when I decided to try to reset processor again without restoring settings. Did not help. Then I turned off AVR, detached FL speaker and turned on AVR and viola - sound came off from FR speaker. I turned off AVR, attached FL speaker and turned on AVR. It was working as if nothing happened, little punk. I decided to not reload saved settings and instead set it up from scratch.
I have no clue what happened. It seems that amps shut down for protection for whatever reason (there was no reason for them to shut down besides power surge?) and FL speaker impedance prevented it from unlocking.
Did anyone experience the same failure?
My plan still remain to buy high end amp and get rid of Marantz - attach OPPO 105 directly to amps or buy something like Emotiva UMC-200 or may be keep Marantz as preamp if its preamp does not ruin analog outputs from OPPO (it may serve as a reserve amp as well).

Wow, this is really funny. I am in a state of flux, not having enough money to do an entire upgrade. I have the 6005, bought it in the spring of 2011. I'm in the process of replacing Mythos Ones. I still have the Mythos 7 center channel, and it sounds night and day better when the signal goes through the Emotiva UMC-200 (set to flat) and into the multi-channel input of a Pioneer Elite SC-07 then I could ever get out of the boat anchor Marantz 6005. The Marantz Audyssey correctly reports the Mythos Ones as small, which puts out some of the thinnest weak mid-bass I've ever heard. All bass guitars sound like the player is using a pick.
The rest of my system consists of new front speakers (for now) -- Ohm MicroWalsh Talls -- and the bass output is crazy compared to the Mythos Ones with dual Outlaw Plus subwoofers, even with them hooked up to the Marantz. Audyseey reported them as large, so there was no subwoofer augmentation on the low end. Now I have them being driven by a pair of Wyred 4 Sound monoblocks, and I have moved up from the minor leagues.
