I have had my 5508 for about 2 months now and no problems, knock on wood

I had a Marantz AV7005 and Denon 4311 as well but prefer the 5508 for SQ and no faults.

Rich,

Thanks for the zip of the discrete codes. Are they by any chance in the Harmony database?

I am not sure about that.
Perhaps there is a way to convert them.

I purchased the 5508 and the mc5500 amp last week--they are connected via xlr. I have the 5508 connected to an Oppo BDP 95 via both hdmi and stereo outputs.

When the source input is changed or when the listening mode is changed I get a popping sound thru my speakers. I'm worried that these pops will damage my speakers first and foremost and second that they will drive me nuts.

I have a 2 year old Onkyo av reciever and it makes clicking sounds but doesnt pop the speakers--I can live with the clicks but the pops are killing the buzz of having some decent equipment (at least I thought it was decent).

I know this has been touched on in other posts but I could not find a solution. Any thoughts out there? Many thanks.

I think you have a bad 5508 and I would contact the dealer you got it from and get a new one. I had the same problem with the Integra DHC-80.1 and the popping in the speakers and REALLY LOUD relay clicks made me nuts so I got rid of it. I was worried that I might have the same problem with the 5508 but mine is very quiet.

Thanks MJ. I was afraid it might be defective, although I had seen some posts that suggested it had something to do with ATT Uverse, firmware updates or even the Panamax power conditioner it is plugged into.

People on the 80.1 thread said it was probably my DirecTv as a lot of people reported the same problem and they also mentioned Uverse. All I can say is they just were not experiencing what I was experiencing. I still have a Onkyo 886 and the 5508 which both have been really quite in the same system but that 80.1 was defective as the clicks and occasional speaker pops made us jump at times.
I did get some flack from other but unless people experience it for themselves they will never know how annoying it really is.

Guys, I am on board now with the 5508, just came home with it. Can someone help me with the link to amazon.com where where I can get the the mic stand and the accessory where you can screw in the audyssey mic on top of it. I know I saw it somewhere in the thread when I was browsing it yesterday but cannot remember the exact page now. Thanks.

for a $26k display, that does not seem out of line. 1/26th of the price makes that mount ~$38 for a $1k display.

You can go with something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Stage-Stands-7...1742595&sr=8-1

Then you need to add this to mount the Audyssey mic:

http://www.amazon.com/CM01-Camera-Di...f=pd_sim_MI_30

And you might as well pick up one of these if you want to use a normal mic with it as they are inexpensive and work well:

http://www.amazon.com/Stage-MY200-Un...ef=pd_sim_MI_6

You can also just use a camera tri-pod as well but the mic stand does come in handy

Just have a look at the 1009 and imagine it with almost identical connections to the 5508.

There has been a delay to what would have been an August/Septemeber release. It's now looking like October/November.

Hi All,

Just chiming in to say I'm joining this thread community after hanging in the 5008 thread. I've had a 5008 and for long, drawn out, complicated reasons, I'm changing over to a 5508. Should have it tomorrow.

I'm running Emo UPA series amps. So I also have XLR cables on the way from Blue Jean Cables to connect them up. Only nine feet, but they do offer slightly better noise isolation. But the main reason is the RCA jacks on the Emo's are too weak and prone to coming loose.

Hoping for some audible improvement over the 5008, even having run it with the external amps, but don't have unrealistic expectations. One benefit is that the 5508 is half the weight of the 5008. My poor ole' back will be grateful!

Later......

.

It will be interesting hearing your comments on the differences as they will be solely attributable to the switch in power amps.

Not true. I have been using the emo power amps with my 5008 and I will be using them with the 5508. Any improvement would be the change from AVR (as Pre/Pro) to Pre/Pro. Basically a potential reduction in noise from the internal amps' electronics (essentially a move from integrated to separates). There is debate about whether Onkyo uses better components or manufacturing procedures with the 5508 since it is a dedicated pre/pro and tends to cost more (maybe MSRP is closer, not sure) or whether it is just that it is a much lower production volume unit than the AVR. If the former, there would be improvement there as well.

But, even if it is slightly better, I won't be able to go back and forth between them as the 5008 is gone. There will have been several days between listening, so my report would really be unreliable. However, I am a big believer in the benefits of the placebo effect and may hear some improvements. If so, I won't know if the perceived improvements are real or placebo, which is ok by me as long as I hear them!

Having said all that, I can report on the change from running the 5008 only to running it with external amps. That improvement was unmistakable. In fact, I had run the 5008 in bridged mode providing over 200watts to my front mains and still noticed marked improvement going to the emo amps. I should say that I also noticed a dramatic improvement going from unbridged to bridged mode in the 5008.

Having owned a 3008 for a few months and now running a 5508 with a UPA-7, I'd say that it's a bit of both.

I missed that. I thought you were moving from 5008 to 5508/Emo. There should be no difference between 5008/Emo and 5508/Emo.
