Although you can manually change any speaker setting in MANUAL SETUP (p. 80), the recommendation by Audyssey is to set all speakers to SMALL (with at least 60hz or 80hz crossovers) regardless of what the AUTO SETUP sets them too. Doing so not only passes the lower frequencies to the sub which has 8x more filters than the speakers, but also increases the available headroom of the AVR.

I have a Marantz SR7005 that I picked up just before Thanksgiving. So far, I like it, but I'm having an issue with the audio on several TV Channels/Shows.
It is a problem that I believe (but not positive) is with the mixing of the audio in the Post Production phase of putting the show together. The issue is that the background music that is coming out of the left & right speakers is really overpowering the narration of the program coming out the center channel. This is especially true on just about all programs that I've seen on the Smithsonian & National Geographic Channels. I've also noticed it on Pro Football games on CBS & Fox, where the crowd noise coming out of the forward Left & Right channels is overpowering the announcers coming out of the center channel (but in this case, it might be a good thing)
For my speakers, I've got a 5.1 setup, NHT SuperZero's for the forward left & right, NHT VS-2 for the center, NHT SB-1's for the left & right surrounds, & a Velodyne 1512 subwoofer.
I ran the auto set-up (as described in the receiver's manual) the night that I bought the receiver, but really haven't touched the setup since then.
Any thoughts on how to correct this problem (how about complaining to Smithsonian & NatGeo)?
Thanks for any input.
Mark

From what you're saying, it seems like you've nailed it on the head (it's source-dependent). If you'd like to make sure, a great investment is an SPL meter. I always go back through after Audyssey and adjust/equalize the channel levels with one (and Audyssey is always off a bit in my room).

If you have Audyssey Dyn EQ enabled, then try setting the Reference Level Offset (p. 76) to -10db.

I purchased my new Marantz SR7005 AVR on April 2nd. The new receiver gave me the incentive to finally take my pair of aging M&K Sound MX-70 subwoofers to the shop for badly needed (reconing) service.

I set up the receiver in the meantime in the absence of the subs and have been very much enjoying the new receiver's outstanding sound and capabilities, and patiently awaited for the shop to inform me that my mini-monsters were repaired and ready to be taken home.

I just picked up the pair of subs earlier this afternoon, connected them, ran Audessey setups and did some fine tuning. I am having the time of my life! Everything if fine and sounds great. I was expecting the Audessey GUI to indicate two subwoofers in the graphic display for the Speaker Configuration. It did not; nevertheless I can feel both subs at work and I'm very happy with my setup. Still tweaking [smile]...

^Although there are two sub outs on the back, they are nothing more than the output of an internal "Y cord". There is no difference in level, phase, EQ, etc.

Units that do differentiate the sub outs usually have the up scale XT32 technology which does indeed treat the two outputs differently.

In A/V reproduction accuracy, there is no concept of "accounting for taste". We don't "pick" the level of bass any more than we get to pick the ending of a play. High fidelity is an unbiased, neutral, exact copy (or "reproduction") of the original source's tonal balance, timing, dynamics, etc..

I read the entire thread since I made my purchase and remember you mentioning something similar in an earlier posting. That's what kept me from becoming perplexed; thanks for reminding me. I wonder what other AVRs utilize the XT32 technology? Thanks for your reply M. Zillich; I have enjoyed your presence throughout this thread!

^The Denon AVR4311 and the pretty similar A100 have XT32 and are part of the same "Denon and Marantz" family.

XT32 has higher resolution filters than XT, especially for the bass, so it is "better", however I concocted a time consuming procedure to set the level and phase ("distance") of two differently placed subs using the computer assistance and microphone of XT alone, not XT32 , which I describe here, should you be interested.

In addition to the Denon 4311CI and A100, XT32 is also currently offered on the upper level Onkyo and Integra models. Of the new 2012 models, it will be moving down to the Onkyo 818.

Solution: I unplugged the Ethernet cable from my router's WAN port (normally feeding into the router) and plugged it directly into the SR7005, literally bypassing the router. The SR7005 got connected to the Internet and did the firmware update without problems this time.

This makes me think that certain routers may be blocking the ports needed to contact Marantz servers where the updates are pushed.

For those with Android devices and with a NAS connected to their SR7005, I found a nice remote app that works much faster than the internal GUI or AVR-remote app.
I now use BubbleUPNP which even shows album art on my Galaxy Note.

Guys, QQ: I'm contemplating finally upgrading my ancient Marantz SR7000 (circa 1998 I think, no digital video switching, etc) to the SR7005......is this receiver still viable, or is Marantz expected to announce 2012 models in the not too distant future?

Thanks in advance.

*sigh*....I was so close to ordering one too......probably better to wait. I really need the dual HDMI outputs of the 7005, but I don't necessarily need 125wpc, my current Marantz feeds 105wpc and its deafening in my room.....but I need to upgrade, maybe if that feature trickles down into one of the mid-tier models I can save a few dollars.

thx.

Last year's 6006 also has dual HDMI outputs. Also note that unless you have difficult speakers to drive, that "deafening" volume is likely achieved with < 5W/CH.

Right, my point was I don't need 125wpc, its an empty number....the price premium isn't really worth the uprated amps for me, one of the things you're paying for is that marketing, I'm looking more at features at this point. I'm driving 14 year old Monitor 9's and Monitors/Atoms by Paradigm in a 5.1, hardly difficult.

I was going to upgrade, but I think...with new product on the horizon....maybe I'll just drop $50 on an HDMI amp and use my HDMI switch a while longer, see what the feature sets look like on the new A/V Receivers. I'd thought, foolishly for a moment, of going separates but I'm not hardcore enough for the expenditure......although it was fun to window shop for Krell components..."I'll sell my car, get an amp, sell the other car, get a pre-amp"

^You are most likely shorting two of the speaker wires together. This is a common pitfall of using spade lugs, single banana plugs, or bare stripped wire (instead of dual banana jacks); when you disconnect a speaker and let the wires fall to the floor, the red and black touch and cause a dead short.

Most modern amps go into protection mode when this happens but hopefully once you remedy the situation the unit will come back to life. If however the rcvr goes into this off mode all by itself even when all your speakers are disconnected from the back, then I'm afraid you need to send your unit in to service.

Well I unplugged all the cables and pulled the receiver out and still not working .... I wonder what can be.... I don't know if I should let it sit there for a while and try later but I think I think it might need service an d the worst of it is that I have no warranty. What to do?

Try the reset procedure listed in your Owner's manual. Repair outside of warranty is likely to cost at least $200-$300.

My Surround Right input terminals are producing static instead of pure white noise when I do my test tones. I just found this out because I finally got my 2 surround side speakers to turn my 3.1 system to 5.1, after having the SR7005 since last Nov. But hey...that's what warranties are for. But still backlog could be about 4-6 weeks because it's at the DSP level and the whole board may have to be taken out and sent to Marantz in NJ Oh well. Better do it now than later.

Will these Marantz SR 7005 be Made in China or in Japan? Anyone have the Chinese version? Any problem with them?

Most likely in China, as the shift was made after the earthquake in Japan. There should be no difference in quality, rather simply the printing on the back of the AVR.

Ah, I gotcha. I just figured they hadn't released the 7006 yet. Any word on when the new line will be released?

Never mind, just saw on a website late August.

Warranty time, my friend.

Many of these sorts of doors are on their hinge via a snapped on "C" shaped section, one at both ends, with the "C" clicked around a cylinder, but if you don't know what your are doing it could get even worse and you might break the hinge entirely {they might deem that "abuse" and not cover you, is the problem with trying yourself}

edit to add: you didn't remove the four feet by any chance, did you? That could be your problem right there.

Thanks, did not remove the feet. I had it installed by a pro who wanted to remove the feet to make it fit in my cabinet on a different shelf. I said no. He is coming back to do some more remote programing and I will have him address this. He works at the place I bought the unit from.
