Cool....yesterday using the apps wont let me connect to the internet with my 808 for the iRadio.
Strange, I do not have the net connect problem ever.
Will try again today after work....

When I press the "menu" in the net page, it exit the app and show the iPad page, what I expect is to see the iradio menu but it does not happen.

Also, was trying to adjust the speaker level on the audio/video page, the front speaker scale freeze and became gray and would not allow me to do anymore adjustment. The treble are high on the scale but I did not hear any different compared to before adjustment

I think that only works on his local version in the Port page. I haven't seen it work locally for me either. I bet there will be a beta update soon.

The problem is, the AVR can have both iRadio (or the Net Server) and the iPod going at the same time. So the problem is detecting which one is active.

Determining that is easy enough, but I usually use NET and PORT as my feature "playground" and when things are looking good, I move them over to the main receiver screen.

Another update:

Album Art just started working! It's been really "fun" and time-consuming poking around with the new messages. The documentation does not really discuss how certain things are implemented. Take Album Art. I suddenly get blasted with dozens of 256 byte messages with encoded data.

How is it encoded? Good question!

Onkyo sends over the bytes as ASCII hex values. It also turns out the images are bitmap (BMP) files. Then there's a marker on the first two bytes that tell us whether we are the first file, one of many middle files, or the last file. Same kind of stuff also happens with the menus.

Whatever logo/icon appears on the TV when playing net radio/media server/USB will show up on the screen. That icon was sent by vTuner.

Curious, has it been a design choice to have the display predominantly grey... are colors an option or are they difficult to program into this application?

I am using nr808 and watching mkv copies of Spartacus now

The message can be a bit obtuse. In some instances the AVR does not support these modes. You can see it gripe a lot about some of these while input is "analog"

If the AVR does not support the command, it returns "N/A". If it cannot perform the command at the moment (not permitted for the type of input) it also returns "N/A". At this time, I have the app say "Unsupported on this AVR". Oh, and sometimes just for kicks - it returns nothing if it is not supported. One good example is the volume sliders under the Audio tab.

I did not want things to be too bright. Grey was easy enough to do and keep consistent. I can easily make it any color combination I wish. The wife suggested pink themes. I told her to go write her own app. It is possible in the settings/preferences I can add color settings so one could make the app look like anything they wish.

Cool, is there a minimum iPad this will run on, is 16GB sufficient?

Larger storage space iPads are only needed if you plan to store a lot of video or tons of songs on them. Apps all run the same across iPad models (at least to date.)

During Iradio, the display does not display current playing station but show the starting station name under latest beta

Some stations only show limited info, like shoutcast stations. If that is not the issue and stations like Pandora only show a few fields, then you may have a version of the App that had issues with objects stacked on the display. The latest couple betas have that sorted out.

Now the only major annoyance I need to address is why the app does not like to remember its last state on a few of the windows. If you are on "NET" and are playing an iPod over USB, switch away and come back, it goes to the iRadio menu. I need to look over these.

Looks like someone else released an Onkyo app on the Appstore a day or two ago.

http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/onkot...95837291?mt=8#

Interesting approach, but no playback controls.

Huh. I'm confused by his buttons. The two screenshots seem to have different button sizes and locations for the same function.

It's kind of cool it can list the surround modes. I find myself toggling through all those different modes on the AVR trying to remember which one expands my particular source to a good surround mix and forgetting how many there are.

The reason for the button sizes is because he is using toolbars and adding buttons dynamically based on what the user states he has for inputs. One button is twice as wide as two, though he could have easily specified a width for them.

I'm working on audio mode selection too. I was planning on having a table view with a disclosure button too, or that nifty spin wheel.

One thing his app lacks is control of sources (unless I missed something). That however, can easily be added with another screen or two.

App update.

Album art is working reliably. I can't say so much for the Onkyo's network stack. Ever see an AVR literally reboot itself? I have.

The following screenshots show album art in action- it works pretty much like what you see on the screen on a 708 (or higher) AVR:

iPod (no artwork, or artwork loading), iPod w/artwork, iPod w/artwork, Pandora, random iRadio station.

Edit: Another update. Button labels are now customizable for inputs and the user has the option of disabling input buttons that are not in use.

For those that are still around, the iPhone/iPod application is fully underway. The main tab windows are there (but unpopulated for now) and it does go on the network and self-discover any Onkyo/Integra receivers and preserves the settings on the iPod/iPhone.

Things should go about as fast as I can design screen widgets for the smaller screen.

In a few days I'll be looking for beta testers with iPhones and iPods touches.

It lives!

Here's the first public photo of the iPod/iPhone app. Lots of stuff is working, mostly because the iPad codebase works well enough. Although the custom font that imitates the VFD display on the AVR needed to be dropped because it is not compatible with iOS 3.1.2.

Why 3.1.2? Because you can take your old 1st Gen iPod Touch or iPhone that may be sitting around and use it as the remote. It also runs fine on newer models.
