I've reviewed all the relative threads on this but can't find a solution.

I've got a Samsung LCD 46" HDTV, and an Onkyo TS-SR606 receiver.

I've switched the HDMI cables around a zillion times but the best I can do is get video and internet connection on the PS3, but no freaking sound.

I've tried assigning the HDMI inputs by component every which way, no luck.

I do get sound from the HDTV HDMI setting, but just a video output for the PS3.

I've gone into the PS3 sound settings, and no matter what I set on manual, it always resets to automatic function with the HDMI setup. My speaker system is a 7.1, but I have only 3.1 set up right now. I assume that's why the automatic HDMI setting shows only 2 channel output. I don't care about that, just want to get sound back on the PS3

BTW, the console was just returned from Sony, repaired, after only 7 months of casual use.

I know I went through hell the first time setting it up, as I had conflicting setup info from all the components, not to mention using all the remotes and HDMI cables.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Bob

Hi Bob, connect PS3 direct to Tv.

Does it produce sound from your tv speaker with HDMI connection?

Does it produce sound from your tv speaker with analog (red & white) connection?

Have you try resetting the PS3 by holding down the power button until it beeps twice?

Does it produce sound if connecting optical cable from PS3 to receiver?

I hooked up the HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and turned on the TV speaker and got sound.

Should I try resetting the PS3 at this point and try using the receiver speakers? One thing I'm never sure of when holding down the power button is when the two beeps occur. There's an immediate single beep, so should there be two more close beeps?

Thanks for the help!

If your tv is getting sound from PS3 then you know the problem is with the receiver.

Reconnect PS3 to the receiver and also check HDMI Control is turned Off.

I'm confused. The PS3 sound settings only allow for HDMI, optical and the VGA connections. If I deselect HDMI, I can't select any of the others as I don't have an optical cable or SCART. ??

Besides, all of my component connections use HDMI cables.

The problem is with the receiver. The PS3 is outputting sound through the HDMI cable.

The problem is Onkyo's have a very high failure rate with HDMI. You have two options.

Get a new receiver (Not an Onkyo).

Or run a toslink cable from the PS3 to the receiver for sound and run the hdmi cable straight to the tv for video. You'll need to tell the ps3 to output via optical. You'll lose any 7.1 sound you may get from a blu-ray, but to be honest 5.1 toslink sounds pretty much the same as 7.1.

Make sure your PS3 setting for HDMI is PCM, unless this is a slim then bitstream will work. Go into the onkyo setting and make sure all the HDMI settings are correct.

In your receiver's setup menu is it set to get the audio from HDMI on the input you are using?
I'm not familiar with Onkyo set-up, but with my AVR I can tell it where to pull video and where to pull audio for each input - maybe the audio setting got changed?

Wasn't aware of a high failure rate with Onkyo receivers.
Will try the optical cable. Nothing wrong with 5.1-for now.
Thanks.

Yeah, no matter what I do, the PS3 setting reverts to PCM 2 ch using the HDMI cable. Also confirmed the Onkyo receiver HDMI assignments were correct.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm going to get a toslink and will post the results for any other people in this configuration situation.

Cheers!

That can happen if HDMI audio output is turned on for the receiver with the PS connected to the receiver. The PS3 see's the TVs audio capabilities, not the receiver's.

"But this one goes up to 11"

say, i got the newest ps3 firmware, the one what blocks the jailbreak.. and i have a fatboy, not the original 40gb fatboy.... i do stilll have an option for bitstream though, and i set it at that too. i would think the firmware would not set itself up to have bitstream in the GUI unless it was a slim, unless... does bitstream work on 80gb ps3's?
