So I am brand new to the home audio game and am looking to build up a system in the coming months. I am going to start with buying a turntable and a receiver.
So I was wondering if having a phono preamp stage would be preferable/more cost effective than having a receiver with a phono input.
I was looking at the Onkyo HT-RC180 with a phono input, and would also allow me to integrate my tv and ps3 once I get some decent speakers.
Also, just as a general question: is THX certification worth it or just something to trick me into paying more?

Thanks.

I guess the obvious comment is that adding a phono amp (which can be quite cheap,) gives you more receiver choices.

As for THX, well, they supposedly do require certain exacting standards. Whether that means you get better sound, I can't say. Arguable, some receivers would likely meet THX standards if submitted, but the manufacturer can't/won't justify the price of certification.

An old Adcom 565 pre amp is highly regarded. It's phono stage is very sought after.

Has anyone heard anything about the Onkyo HT-RC180? It seems to have most of the features I'm looking for and at a pretty decent price. I suppose the real question is whether or not I would be paying too much for the phono input or could I get a receiver with similar specs and a preamp for less (THX certified or not).
