I had the exact same problem with the HDMI through earlier this week. Worked fine for a while, then no audio. I called tech support who instructed me to do a factory reset & that fixed it. When I asked why it might have lost audio, they told me "well, it works now." When I suggested that they might want to research a potential bug in their firmware I was told that "it's working now" again. I guess I was hoping they would at least log an issue for their developers to look at. We will see how long this lasts before I need to perform another factory reset.

It appears that my HDMI through problem is not a problem. At least today. That's after a couple of factory resets last night and shutting down all 3 devices. When I tried this morning it worked. After listening to Pandora via Net for a couple of hours it worked.

Just another old geezer killin' time till time kills me.

I had this issue this morning. I had switched off the receiver yesterday night for some time while keeping the TV on. In the morning, i only got audio out for all inputs. I powered off everything for 5 minutes and then turned on the Receiver and then the TV. Things work fine now.

Sounds like a firmware issue.

I just bought and setup my 609 and did fw update with USB drive with no problem. It would be difficult to run ethernet wire but I have a SAGEM XG-703A wireless usb dongle that works with my laptop but does not light up when I plug into my 609. Does that indicate the dongle is not supported or do I need to do something with network setup like enter the MAC of the dongle?

I am reading all these issues on the 609s that people are having. Is that why they are selling so cheap? I really want to get the 709 but I can't justify paying almost double just for better Audyssey and the other small differences.

Can someone tell me if you can navigate and listen to Pandora via the receivers on screen display? I would like to listen without firing up the display every time.

Also, will the 2nd zone play Pandora? I read that it is analog only to the second zone but then I though I read about someone using pandora in a second zone....

Look at Post -pg2-#57 for picture of the receiver screen display -you can navigate from the receiver on screen display.

The Second Zone will play any Audio that does not pass to the HDMI so it does play Net audio.

I have the 609 and have not had any issue's for the price it is well worth the Money (biggest bang for your buck) .

Without a doubt - best bang for the buck. Yes the "net" input is doable via onboard display and it shoots out zone 2 just fine. In fact, its how I have to do it since my older hitachi has hdmi handshake issues with the 609. Another way I found to do things on the "net" input is to get onkytroller for your android to set zone 2 - I can be on the deck and turn on zone 2 and change internet / pc music and without having to go down to the unit. Works very well.

Thank you for your responses guys!!! My Sony 60" is an older lcd rear projection with only the older style DVI input . I have an HDMI to DVI converter now running from my blu-ray player that works fine. Do you think this will be any sort of an issue running video through the receiver to the tv?

Man, the 609 seems almost too good to be true! Is the price drop because of something newer coming out or will the 709s drop like this too? I thought they are both still pretty new...
I don't understand all the Audyssey stuff, I mean, I know what it does but since I only have a max of 3 listening positions and my sub sounds perfect as it is, do I really need to even consider the better Audyssey on the 709? Otherwise, I want to pull the trigger on the 609 soon, if I can still find one of these $395 ish deals!

should be ok - you just have to worry about hdmi handshake issues with older sets, but from what I have found out it was mostly hitachis that had handshake issues.. dvi is hdmi without the audio - so as long as the onkyo is going to handle the audio - you should be good to go. here is another interesting point - if the source handshakes ok with the tv - the onkyo will be fine.

Time for ANYONE remotely interested in the 509 or 609 to RUN to Frys.

They have the RC360 in their special Anniversary Sale Ad for only $299.

Currently have the NR509 and works great. I'm thinking or returning to pick up the RC360. Any thoughts besides the additional HDMI ports, less analog input and Marvelle engine?

good catch - 5.1 - and there is a zone 2 on the 509 - but its analog out only - so it wont drive other speakers.

Gotcha. Thx.

Debating whether to exchange the 509 with the 360. There's also a difference in wattage from 80x5 to 100x7. Will a 20watt increase per channel be noticeable?

I am no audiophile - but the 20 watts would also depend on your speakers. I think the 20 watts would make a slight difference. For the price, if I had a 509 I would jump on the 360 and return the 509. For me, the 7.1 / powered zone 2 would be enough to make the jump..

I'm with ya, I have a 360 already on hold, just need to get home, disconnect and box the 509 for exchange.

Its 7.1 and has the Qdeo chip.

Frys has the 609 for $599 on their site. Is it different in store? That is the worst price I have ever seen. Can anyone confirm that Vanns is still selling it for cheaps?

The RC360 is more or less the NR609 without the THX cert and PC input. The firmware update file is even the same.

That's a lot of receiver for $299.

That's a screaming deal on the 360.

I was able to fix my HDMI issue by unplugging and plugging back in. I assume the FW update in a few days (?) will fix this.

Agreed, right on...... It's more of the 609 and at 299.00 this is a screaming deal.

Hi guys,

I'm also having the issue with the audio just turning off after a few hours of watching TV or even Internet Radio. It takes a power on/off cycle to fix this - very annoying.

I also have an issue that when in the Internet Radio app, menu navigation is very poor. Sometimes the directional buttons do not work and I have to toggle between say SAT/CBL and then back to NET to get them to work again and navigate. Sometimes I even have Pandora app freeze.

I ran out and bought a RC-360 thanks to mike171979 for that. I am definitely returning the 609 and perhaps the 360 if it continues to have the same problems above. The issue is that I can't find a similarly "feature" AVR for nearly the price as the 360 for $299.... but then again I want to be able to have the darn thing on all day without having to reboot it. Sigh.... cutting edge stuff.

Well I bought a 360 yesterday and spent this morning hooking it up, which took way longer than it should have, but when your dealing with very tight spaces and cables that are never quite long enough its a long and sweaty job. Its finally all in and I plugged in my Ipod through the USB and turned the sucker on. Everything worked just fine. Now I just have to set it up correctly and run Audyssey, but thats going to have to wait until late tonight because I have to be at a wedding in 3 hours.

rsmithut, I'm disappointed to hear about the 609, especially since the 360 is such a close cousin with the same amplifier and same video processing. Hopefully your 609 was a defective unit and you won't have any problems with your new 360.

FWIW: the Onkyos tend to improve over the year as new firmware updates come out. The 708 is a good example of a unit that had rather nasty bugs when it was first released, but is a really stable unit now.

New FW update is out (5-13-11)

The 05/12/2011 update addresses the following:
1. Improves the noise with Picture Mode (Edge Enhancement, Custom, Cinema)
2. Improves the picture quality
3. Improves [NET/USB] playback
4. Enhances the display on the screen (OSD)
