I don't even see the unit at all. I don't have a local fry's, will they ship at that price if I call?

From what I understand there is no price matching between in store and online for Frys. So if you see $599 for the unit online, that is the price you pay. In my case, I asked someone at the local store, she said i can buy it online but with store pickup and at the cash register they will reduce the price. Instead of taking a chance, I just drove to the store and picked one up in person. They had 15 in stock last night.

You may want to call them and ask them if they can give you better price via phone call vs. online order.

Anyone having issues with black levels using through setting? I get degraded black levels on video, but switch to direct or custom and the issue is gone.

I got my last two Onkyo recievers from J&R. They always seem to have a 399.00 pre-order price for the line that includes the 608 and 609 receivers. Did any of you get yours there? I also like the free shipping and not taxes.

I looked through a few pages of this thread but did not see any where owners tried the two new channels up front. If you have them in place, I'd like to know what they add to 5.1 or 7.1 movies.

Just got the TX-NR609 for $399 from Fry's to go with the Klipsch HD 300 speakers I got from Circuit City for $117. I then realized that I needed all the cables so I went ahead and ordered the subwoofer cables, speaker wire, and banana plugs from Monoprice. I'll get those shipped by Wednesday, so I hope it sounds as great as I hope it will and is worth the wait.

I got mine at Frys. They seem to have an in-store only special price for 609 for $399. But while I was there picking up my 609, the sales guy tried to sell me an open box 808 for $700. I was just wondering if that 808 was worth the price ($700) or i should just stick with my brand new 609.

I did exactly the same. I got my speaker wire, sub woofer cable, component and Wii component and wall mount my tv from Mono price. The pre-sales technical support was amazing, the person spend 45 mins making sure I was ordering the right parts. And prices are cheapest i was able to find for all of the items I needed to order.

guys,

Has anyone compared the onkyo AVRs across past to current generations ? Has the Onkyo sound with the 09 Series become much less "Bright & Lean" then the 08,07 and older series...?

Thanks

Thanks,

Rana

Would you please mind sharing what type of speaker wire, sub woofer cable, banana plugs did you get. I am in same boat. I am in process of ordering AV receiver and home theater speakers system soon. Item description or catalog numbers works fine. If you don't want to post it here, please PM me. Thanks.

These are what I ordered:
100ft 16AWG Enhanced Loud Oxygen-Free Copper Speaker Wire Cable

2682 12ft High-quality Coaxial Audio/Video RCA CL2 Rated Cable - RG6/U 75ohm (for S/PDIF, Digital Coax, Subwoofer, and Composite Video)

2943 1 PAIR OF High-Quality Copper Speaker Banana Plugs - Open Screw Type (qty 5)

1383 Cable Jacket Stripper [HT-S501A]

My living room isn't that large, so the 16AWG should be ok for me since the wiring won't be too long.

I called Fry's this morning, and they told me they had the 609 for 399. I then drove a solid 40 minutes to get there only to be told that that price was absurd and that I was given "garbage information" (their words). I left them with some extremely unkind words of my own, and I will never be buying anything from them.

I joined just to give you guys that heads up. I am in no rush to buy this unit (dad's birthday is at the end of next month). The Fry's I went to was in Atlanta, Georgia.

I don't mind at all
  • 2791 100ft 14AWG Enhanced Loud Oxygen-Free Copper Speaker Wire Cable
  • 6499 6FT Audio Video ED Component Cable for Wii - White
  • 2182 3ft 22AWG 5-RCA Component Video/Audio Coaxial Cable (RG-59/U) - Black
  • 654 12ft RCA Plug/Plug M/M Cable - Black
  • 5920 Adjustable Tilting/Swiveling Wall Mount Bracket for LCD LED Plasma (Max 200Lbs, 42~63inch)

I come here to learn and share what I learn. Let me know if i can answer any more questions about my setup. I did not order any banana plug. My friend who will be helping me set up the speakers told me not to order banana plugs. His setup seems to be working fine with using just the speaker post screws.

Really? I was in an HHGregg today and looked at a 609 but the brain dead sales girl didn't mention it was on sale, it had $499.00 on the tag. They did have a 708 display model on the open box table that the manager offered me for $400.00 , but after reading the 708 thread, I am hesitant to get it, it is actually for a family member I am helping out getting a new avr and blu-ray player.

The price isn't advertised, so if there us no sign up you wouldn't know. It could also vary by region.

I used these from monoprice.. very nice and no tools needed to install. I like these because of the flat end - easier to insert the wire and screw it back together.
2801 - screw type banana clip . I use these instead of directly to the binding post.. much easier and cleaner.

Monoprice rocks - got the 25' subwoofer cable - very nice quality. I also use the CL2 16 ga speaker wire in the white jacket.

How does one know if it is on sale if it is not advertised?

For some reason if you go online it says on sale, add to cart to find out price. Then it is the same price in the Cart. So I went to the store and it was 50$ off. Plus I got an additional 5% off just haggling. I think Onkyo does not allow sale prices to be advertised. Anyhow the sale price in store said good till June 1st.

I just got a ht-rc360 (almost same as 609, right?) and had the no HDMI video to TV problem (had sound, no video). So, I did a firmware update which fixed the no video problem, but now I no longer have any internet radio stations available when I press the NET button. Instead, I have a bunch of tiles that say "e onkyo music" where the pandora, slacker, etc. should be. I was able to verify that I do have access to my network by browsing to it from my PC and was able to verify that it does have access to the internet by trying the firmware update again where it gave the "no update" message.

I tried the hard reset (VCR - Standby button)
I tried setting a static IP
I tried to force a firmware update via USB (gave "no update" message)

This is killing me.. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's all these posts that make me really wonder if I want to bother with Onkyo. Their prices dropped today again but not sure it's worth the risk. Sorry to hear all you having problems....

Funny you say this, i had actually already done the same thing and like you say, there is a line through the 499.00 indicating a lower price, but when you add to cart it is still 499, weird. I may give it shot tomorrow.

Yeah, although i have a 5508 with no problems, reading all these problems still makes me nervous. It seems like every damn thread you go to there are all kinds of issues

Guys, i have owned 2 onkyo receivers in the past (along with an old 5 disk cd changer) and had absolutely no problems. I expect that there is either some easy solution to my problem or there will be a firmware fix soon. If I got a bad receiver, it happens.

Bottom line with my problem, the 3x0 series and the x09 series are the first to include internet radio and I expected to have a few issues with a newly released device, especially when no one else has the same feature set for anywhere near the price. If this receiver was very expensive, I'd be pretty pissed, but it wasn't compared to what I could have paid for a competitor. I'll go through the motions of asking on here for help and calling their support line. If it doesn't work, I'll send it back to Amazon and get a new one. I've really always liked their products and hope this is just a bump in the road to another wonderful device.

I didn't mean to come across as being argumentative, but my 360 is too new to the market for me to chase them down with pitchforks. For me, they just have a great track record. Thanks again to everyone on here who has helped me while I lurked from the shadows.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. When I called our local Fry's in Houston, the person on the phone actually told me the price was $399. When i went to the store, I found that this receiver actually did have price tag of the same price in their listening rooms. And luckily it rang up $399.99 at the cashier. I had no issues.

I actually called my local Fry's and the guy on the phone said the price was $599. I ignored the guy and went anyways, and on the shelf in the home receivers section it was priced at $399.

I found out through an earlier post in this thread. I guess someone must have been walking around in the store and they saw the price tag, they picked it up and published it here. That is how I found out via this thread.

What is NewEggs return policy like??? They have the 709 for $649 !! But is it worth it to pay extra from crutchfield for the service and assistance ????? I have never bought from newegg before.

What exactly are the limitations with zone 2 being analog? I emailed onkyo and they assured me that I can listen to radio and pandora (deck) while listening to the same thing or something different in the main room.

That is all I need, but what are the other limitations for future reference?

Thanks.

Yes, pandora and stuff can be heard in zone 2. I made sure of that in several threads when I started looking at these. The limitations from my understanding would be like if you hooked up a CD player with tos optical, that would not go to zone 2.
I have used Newegg for years and never had a single problem with them even on some price matching issues and returns. I know the 609 has the THX cert but the RC360 can be had at under the mentioned sale price online with free shipping. The price will go up at this site but every few days it drops down again. I was Afraid to say where or Mention priZe due tO the sites rules. LOL

I came off soundiNg like I was bashing Onkyo earlier and the point was made that all this stuff is new and a firmware update MAY in fact fix a lot of these issues. I can't find any receiver near this price range that does 1/2 the stuff these 609/rc360 can do so I may retract my judgement for now.
