Hi

I am looking to set up a 5.1 channel Home Theatre. What would you recommend the TX509 or TX609? I'll be using it for movies and music. What's the real advantage of the 609 over the 509? I notice the 609 has THX and the 509 hasn't is this really important?

Thanks

Onkyo's network AV receivers already have an extensive suite of streaming music services and it's about to get better. Onkyo announced today that it will be adding the recently launched Spotify streaming music service to its network receivers via firmware update. The TX-NR609 (which we reviewed last month) will be the first receiver to get the update, with the rest of its 2011 networked-enabled receivers to follow. Streaming Spotify on Onkyo receivers will require a premium Spotify account, so you'll need to pay $10 a month to access the service.

The Onkyo TX-NR609 is the first AV receiver we've seen to add Spotify, although AirPlay-enabled receivers such as the Denon AVR-1912 and Pioneer VSX-1021-K will likely be able to access the service by streaming them from an iOS device (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch).

The onkyo tx-nr609 in EUROPE has had spotify as a standard feature since it was introduced, spotify is just now launching there service in the U.S.A. as of today (7-14-11) therefore,it is only natural that ONKYO U.S.A. would offer a firmware update for all of there 2011 network capable receiver's,beginning with the tx-nr609.

Wow, I'm shocked. Onkyo usually does not add features after a release like this, I was about to post yesterday that Spotify would probably be held back as a 2012 feature. What I want to know is if our EU buddies need to pay a subscription for Spotify, or is it a free service like Pandora is here in the States?

Spotify, will be offered as a premium monthly subscription service, that will cost subscribers,TEN dollars a MONTH.Not a bad deal, considering spotify's vast catalog of music offerings,in every category! Spotify may also offer free limited trial subscriptions, and other options,in the U.S.

Spotify monthly subscriptions in the U.S.A. are less expensive than those in EUROPE.

Ok, so what do we need to do to get a petition going to add this feature (Spotify) to the 509? I read in a blog that Onkyo had hinted at adding it to other receivers, so it might be worth a shot. This would be amazing as I just bought the 509 last month before I knew what Spotify was. Got Spotify yesterday and it is incredible.

EDIT: After reading the CNET blog linked about it sounds like this may be a "given" at this point. They make it sound like ALL network receivers will be getting this. That would be super cool of Onkyo.

updated the firmware last night via the network - went well - current version is 1061-0900-0010-6103. Spotify shows up in the list - however since I have hdmi hanshake issues I will have to find a monitor that works to see how (or if) you start a free trial. If you have an account you can just enter it from the on unit display. Also - no firmware update error "5-64". Also the web interface adds spotify so you could just enter it there as well.

I updated today. When you click on Spotify it asks for username and password. I had already signed up so I was in. As soon as I get my playlists built it will be great. Unlike Pandora and Slacker the Spotify app on the 609 doesn't let you add stations and artist It gets the setup you make online on your computer.

Oh crap, they released it already? Now I have to get a software update out. :-(. It depends on where they put it on the menu. Is it the next item, or did they reorder everything?

Hey guys, i'm really hoping someone can help me..

I just got the TX-SR309 and have a Comcast Motorola DCX-3400M and Samsung LN55C650.. My issue is that my receiver is connecting to my cable box and sending it a signal to go to 1080i when my tv is off, but by doing that it is resetting the video settings on my cable box and sometimes i get a DHCP error and have to power cycle everything... I can't seem to find anybody that has a clue whats wrong with this receiver, i just had comcast out and we worked it back to the receiver because if HDMI Thru is turned off, obviously i get no picture when the receiver is off, but it doesn't mess with the cable box when i turn off my tv... I can't find any firmware update for this receiver and I tried all the hdmi ports on my TV and receiver, along with all different hdmi cable going to the cable box and TV (tried to keep it uniform, either all standard HDMI to highspeed)...

I'm thinking it has something to do with the receivers ability to push video through HDMI, and it's forcing my cable box to 1080i, which in turn resets the settings, does anybody know if there's a way to disable all this extra stuff so I can use this receiver like a regular AV switch like the old units?

I've tried changing all kinds of settings on the cable box, disabled the HDMI control features on the TV and receiver, i'm about ready to take this unit back and just get something out.

Been wanting to get the 609 for quite awhile but have been waiting and watching for the price to come down. Was $479 on Amazon for quite awhile, then $459 then $439 for a long time. A week or two ago it went to $437 so I figured it was gonna be a long, slowly incremental haul to my target price (or should I say my wife's?) of $425. Then it went back up to $439 so I figured the reductions were over for the time being. Then, a few minutes ago I did the obligatory afternoon check and whaddya know, it was $399!! Still is if you've been on the fence.

Count yourself lucky you don't live in the UK. Currently it's very difficult to find the TX-NR609 at below £499.00 that's around $800.00

You might consider yourself lucky as it's difficult to find the TX-NR609 in Australia at below A$950 that's around $1000

But then you could do what I did and order from Amazon US and then purchase a step-down transformer 220/240v -> 110/120v. Fixed

I guess it all boils down to size and relative competitiveness of the market in each Country. Most US States are Goods tax free, Australia has Goods tax of 10% and the UK has a whopping 20% levied.

Someone somewhere is price gouging us Aussies.

Does 609 support DSX wide mode? I've read in somewhere that it only support DSX height mode. Anyone can confirm this?
As far as I know, 608 support DSX wide. 609 ditching this feature?

Most states in the US do have a sales tax. In Texas it's 6.25% with local sales tax up to 2%. However, Amazon refuses to collect the Texas sales tax so, since I ordered too early I paid $488 with no sales tax. Had I purchased locally it would have been $499 + 8.25 % or $528. And it is now $399 at Amazon. That'll teach me to be an early adopter. Not

Hi there

I am considering getting the TX-NR609 myself or the TX-NR709 as I needed the pre-outs. Can I please ask which step-down transformer you bought?

I am thinking the 609 will need a 1kW transformer to give it extra headroom, and 1.5kw for the 709?

If anyone knows of a reliable 220/240V -> 110/120V stepdown transformer that is available to order from Amazon US, I am interested to know. This 1.5kw stepdown transformer here on Amazon US at $74.39 before shipping seems very good value?

@ sschen.

Yeah I bought my stepdown here in Oz, we have 240v supply. The Onkyo supply is actually rated at 120v. No power grid can deliver a totally constant voltage.

We have our home theatre in a relatively small room, we only have a 5.1 8ohm speaker arrangement and never have the volume above the 60 setting and then have the volume capped at 65 in the menu. I can't imagine we'd ever draw more than ~ 300w of mains power, so use a 500w stepdown. We never use the hdmi pass-through facility activated in standby mode. We did online research and discovered the hdmi pass-through draws a whopping 45w or so - I reckon that's a wasteful way to be watching your TV with no up-scaling. I also understand that stand-by usage can also be high if you leave a USB dongle connected. So every night at bedtime the step-down transformer goes off and it won't be back on till next afternoon or evening.

If you're going to have the receiver on stand-by 24/7 &/or can't be 99% certain that others won't be cranking the volume up, it'd be advisable to get at least a 1kw step-down.

Refer to the Amazon feedback for the various stepdown units for guidance, that's what they're there for ) Good luck.

So I've created a spotify account and I'm trying to login on my 609. I keep getting a sign in error. Is anyone else having any login issues with spotify?

Just realized I need a premium account for the receiver. Bummer...

I have to say that all the firmware updates have fixed any of the problems that I had been having with the 609. Now I have been trying to play several DTS albums in mp3 format, that I have downloaded in the past. For some reason I just get a hiss which to me means that they are not being decoded. When these same tracks are played via my Oppo, I have no playback problems.

I tried to call in and see if they would slide me on on the old deal...no go. I heard they try to sync up with Newegg's pricing and vice versa.

No worries...sold my 607 for $200 and got this one for a decent price.
