I just got called & ordered the NR609 for the $395.20 & they also gave me a very good deal on some Definitive ProCinema 800 speakers to boot. I went $200 over my budget, but could not pass up this combo!

I cannot believe they did that.

EDIT:

Yup, Vann's caught on to what they were doing (obviously) and sent a reply to them telling them to knock it off and check the website for the "current" price. It,s wonderful what you learn when they set down the phone and they do not put you on hold.

So it was kicked up to corporate. If they don't have an answer by the time I get off work, I'll have to do it the "hard way" and get my order in before e sale ends.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Vanns is selling below the Onkyo 'low limit' hence the verbal pricing only. Either way, save yourself the headache, return the Fry's unit and just order the Vann's :-)

Awesome deal, guys! Anybody thinking about purchasing a 609 should jump on this one. I still am feeling good about $424 out the door including tax but why say no to this delivered to your door?

And that is what I did. I don't know what Fry's is up to, but considering they called Vann's three times and then requested a fax/email as well as identifying themselves as a reseller, I'd say they deliberately tried to torpedo the price match.

I dropped by after work and they said corporate would have an answer tomorrow. Not good enough, since the sale is over today. I just completed my order via Vann's, though the 609 now increased to $396.

I still have enough time on my 30-day return to get it back when the new unit arrives next week. Saved me $154 in the end going through Vann's.

Thinking on this, I wonder if the other models like the 370 and 709 were also part of the deal...

I mainly bought the 609 for integration testing with my software - the price is right (and now even better) but I love my 708... Oh well, 2012 is just around the corner...

Audyssey MultEQ and XT are in the higher level models, which do attempt to EQ the SW channel.

The only thing Audyssey will do in the 609/509, as noted, is adjust the level and distance.

And I disagree with Augerhandle's advice: go ahead and adjust the SW gain as you see fit: Audyssey is a tool, and if you want more bass, go ahead and give yourself more bass. Especially since Audyssey can't do anything about the SW EQ, so the relative boominess/bass content is very dependent on the frequency of the material, and you might be happy with something different from what the (basic) Audyssey algorithm has decided is "right".

As recently stated in the Audyssey thread: Reference vs. Preference, and Preference is OK.

shinksma

Thanks for the correction shinksma, you are absolutely correct. I have an 805 series Onkyo, and forgot about the different Audyssey features in the 509 and 609 series. As far as the "knob" or the "menu", I still prefer the menu adjustment (with Audyssey MultEQ and XT) for the sub, as it allows Audyssey to (theoretically) keep the signal flat. If you have a (corrected) peak, and turn the knob on the sub up, Audyssey can no longer correct for it, as it has no way to know about it unless you recalibrate. Again I agree, preference is okay, mine is just the menu control.

Thanks shinksma!
I have a buddy who has the tools and experience to get it dialed in better than the Audyssey so I might do that soon.

$395! That was a great deal! I wish I could have gotten mine for that price!

Thanks, Jim!! I have been researching replacing my well-loved but tiring 12-year-old Onkyo TX-DS656 and have been on the fence as well about this new TX-NR609 - until I saw your post about the Vann's deal. I placed my order immediately. I am so glad I checked this thread yesterday! It is time for my family to join the networked AV receiver age. Gerry

My Vann's order status is showing only as "Processed" at this point. It's so hard to wait for a new AV toy! I still remember the excitement when I bought my first Pioneer receiver, JBL L26 speakers and turntable in 1976! There's nothing like the smell of new equipment. I am trying to be patient...

Yes it does, if you want basic controls only and have no need for anything other than listening mode, volume, source input and net playback controls.

If you looked them over, you must have seen mine. I just refrain from mentioning it too much on the forums 'cause I'm really here to participate in the forums, not spam my wares.

Hello,

In Belgium we have received TX-NR609.
But there is a problem with the Edge Enhancement function of the marvel ship.
When you activate it, the 609 generate white line and a lot of artefacts on the picture.

problem can be seen here : http://www.audiovideohd.fr/tests/284...X-NR609-3.html
(picture with the car) (Put mouse on the picture, white line appear near the wheel of the car on right)

Is there same problem in other countries ?

Thanks for feedback.

Actually I didnt...I just picked the one made by Onkyo. I'll find out when I get mine.
Since you mention yours may be more powerful, may I ask where you got the commands from?

Up until last year, Onkyo published a spreadsheet of their network protocol. Starting with the 2011 models, Onkyo decided they were no longer going to do this unless you are a distributor or "authorized installer". Both of which require a serious cash outlay. So now I am reduced to reverse engineering and having to scrounge for information on the new models. Sometimes if I am lucky, someone leaks the document.

Onkyo just went for simple operation with their app. Nothing wrong with that. Others (and quite a few people, from what I see) want my "kitchen sink" approach, where I try to cram all the possible functions into an iPad/iPhone application, making some obscure commands easily available. Additionally, I try to present all the info on a minimal number of screens. It's just a different approach. There's another 3rd party app that strikes a medium between mine and the OEM's.

I couldn't find this information anywhere on the Internet, so I thought I'd post it here in case it can be of help to someone.

As of April 29, 2011, after applying the current firmware update, my 609 reports its firmware version as 1031-0400-0010-3101.

By the way, I tried doing the firmware update over the network and ended up with Error!! 3-84 on the display. I was afraid I'd bricked it, but after unplugging and replugging it came back to life. I had no problem with the update over USB -- let's hope that one of the things fixed by the firmware update is the network firmware update process!
