That is correct. The receiver can up-convert from everything to HDMI, but can't down-convert back to anything (including component). Yes, I think it's lame and a way to force folks into HDMI equipment.

A side question: Is there any individual tone controls for the iPhone/USB source other than loudness/bass/treble? I'm finding that the bass on music sounds pretty weak, but blu-ray and xbox content sounds fine.

Sorry, I can't asnwer that as I don't have mine hooked up yet - but I do know you can alter the sound from your iPhone by going to Settings/Music and changing the EQ preset to one of a dozen or more different EQ settings. Try picking an EQ preset that has more bass in it maybe?

BUT, I may want to pull out my old Pioneer Elite 92 model and hook up the new Pioneer unit. When I do so with the new tv, everything will be HDMI if it carries a video signal (Tivo & BD) and I've never been able to use HDMI cables before because my current plasma is a 720i model and doesn't do 1080i or have HDMI inputs. Everything's been component or optical as needed.

I do not really want to hook something up temporarily, but would like to take the new AVR for a spin. In reading the connections instructions in the manual, it appears that if I'm using an HDMI input to the AVR for say my Tivo or BD (the Tivo is an S3 so also has my cable cards in it for my Comcast cable) it sounds like I cannot component video out from the AVR to the existing plasma screen. In other words, can I use component video out from the AVR if I'm using HDMI video in from my Tivo and BD to the receiver? Having never had to work with HDMI before, I'm ignorant. Somebody edukate me!

I can definitely understand being eager to hook up your new 1121. If you want to take it for a spin, why not just run an HDMI cable from your [BD or TiVo] to the 1121 (just so you can send it audio signals over HDMI) and just keep the same component cables to your old TV for video? The receiver doesn't care that it's not outputting video signals to an HDTV. Similarly, the [BD or TiVo] doesn't care either. I've never experienced a device that stops sending audio or video signals out of one connection if you hook something up with another connection.

Of course, you've only got less than a day anyway, so it might not be worth your while this late in the game. When you get it set up, let us know how you like it!

New VSX-1121 owner here. Upgrading from an Onkyo 608. Newegg's Black Friday deal was too good to pass up.

I Should get it by Monday. I'll give a detailed comparison between the two then. I think the Pioneer is going to blow away the 608.

Yes, I was trying to come up with a good reason I am up at 3:30 am, and the $400 amazon deal must be the reason. Just placed an order.

Edit: I am in such a good mood from that deal I went ahead and ordered 2 HSU ULS-15's right after I ordered the 1121. I think xmas is over this year for me.

Same price at Newegg. They got me before I noticed Amazon had it for the same price.

I don't know, but I think 1121 is more future proof... I also don't know how much it matters to you but the output power is 110w compared to 90w on 1021... besides basically for few more bucks you get the equipment from the top shelf with all the bells and whistles, I say get it and return the 1021..

Any reason that the Amazon reviews are just so-so?

when it comes to reviews I wouldn't go by Amazon's, there are only 7 of them and basically only 2 not pleased people.. read through them and seek out a pro review and ultimately decide for yourself, you can always return it if ur not happy... but since u got 1021, I think it makes sense to get 1121 for few bucks more if not the same price as 1021.. just my 2 cents..

I'm going with the 1121 for $100 more. The return policy is easy and I might even have someone buying it from me. Just seems to make sense to get the 1121 in my eyes as well.

On those horizontal tabs you'll also find a "Manuals and Brochures" tab...that's where I got the above product sheets from. If you want to dig into it, you can dl the product manuals for comparison too.

Hey everyone!
I almost jumped on the Onkyo bandwagon but saw the deal for the Pioneer VSX 1121 and couldn't pass it up. I purchased the Item from newegg (I didnt know Amazon had it as well).

Currently using the Pioneer VSX 1018AH and moving up to this bad boy. This is my first THX certified receiver (Does it really matter much??).

Looking to get rid of that annoying Optical cable that runs accross my bedroom rug... Excited about ethernet media streaming more than any of the other features as I won't be using the onboard amp section (Onkyo m 504 for mains, Yamaha M-60 for surrounds, no center channel) for anything, nor will I be upconverting any video sources.

Oh, and I downloaded the Android controller App, and plan to report my findings upon it's arrival.

Well Happy Holidays all! Hope it's a working unit

Ordered the 1121 from amazon this morning. I have been looking to replace my 1015 that got surged during a storm. Cable box was fried, but the 1015 has been limping along. Sometimes it only runs 2.0 front speakers and sometimes 7.1 (random dropping in and out).

Do I need to borrow an ipad to set this up or can I do it without one? I plan to setup my Harmony One to operate it on a daily basis.

I was debating between a refurbished Denon 2112CI and brand new 1121 and decided to place an order for this 1121 because it is brand new from Amazon.

Will this be as good or better sound quality compare to Denon 2112CI?

Just bought it, one big question is how is the passive HDMI pass through
I have heard some issues. That will be a deal breaker if it has issues.

No iPad needed. All setup can be done using the included remote. From a harmony standpoint, I wish this receiver had separate PowerOn and PowerOff commands instead of one PowerToggle command.

I am about to jump on the Pioneer bandwagon, I have not had any Pioneer in years (since the 70's) At the price I can grab today $399.00 vs $579.00 for the 709 I guess I can't go wrong? I do not have a ipod touch, kid lost it (believe that!)Would anybody here think as far as raw power goes at reference levels, both have 110 wats per channel, that they will be equal? In high Fi stores the reps say that the Elite models have better filters than the vsx 102o - 1121-k models. I don't know because none of them have it set up so you could listen side by side.I do know that the VSX-52 had a better sound,at same level, same klipsh speakers and sub, than the Onkyo 709,to me because I like the mid-range sound also (hope I explained this right) I didn't get the chance to study and change any thing. I'm hard pressed on what to do! Someone tell me, Hey!,It's way better now go buy it! (just kidding) I do like opinions though. Thanks guys!

The 1121 and the 52 aren't set up side by side for a reason. It's because internally, they're practically the same exact receiver. Better "filters"? Please. I once went into a "Hi-Fi" store and the guy was instant that the VSX-521 upconverted 480i content to 1080p. Simply not true. I never ever take salespeople's words as truth anymore. You can get FAR more information online these days.

There has been a pretty good bit of discussion on how similar the 1121 and the 52 are on earlier pages of this thread. The amplifiers, the signal processors... all internal components (save a few negligible ones) are identical. Both are THX Select II certified too. I really don't think you can go wrong getting the 1121 at the price it's at today. I've been waiting, waiting, waiting myself since the summer and I think the price is finally within my reach.

I'm not as well versed with the 709, but I've had a hard time finding receivers that give you the features, quality and performance of the 1121 for the same price. Good luck!

VSX-52 and 1121-k are almost the same besides the extra HDMI out and the 12V trigger. As far as filter being different it is anyones guess. The list price of the two are not much different only a premium of $100 but that could explain the extra features on elite. If you look at the weights of the two units they are identical (30.21 pounds) which tells me internal guts are identical as well.

It appears the Amazon deal is done, but the Newegg deal continues. I've never ordered from Newegg and am a little weary of them because their return policies seem stringent

Edit: Nevermind, Amazon brought it back.

I've never seen someone who owns it post that it works.

I've seen plenty of people post that it doesn't.

If anyone has gotten it to work, please let us know your secret.

Yeah, I went to a BB last week and talked to a salesperson there for the first time in a decade. I was amazed/saddened/PO'ed at how completely incorrect his information was, and how he tried to upsell the older couple next to me. The brick and mortar stores sure aren't doing themselves any favors--a knowledgable salesforce is one of their few remaining potential advantages.

Newegg is literally my favorite retailer of all time. Thousands and thousands of dollars in purchases through them over the years and never had an issue. They also ship really, really quick if you live close to NJ or CA. Trust them as much as you would amazon. (no tax for NY with Newegg, tax with amazon is the silver bullet).

That's good info, thanks. I went ahead with Amazon (primarily due to familiarity). Free shipping and no tax. Had planned to get the 1021 from Costco for $380 as you essentially get unlimited return time with it, but couldn't pass up the Marvell processor of the 1121 for the same price.
