Hmmm.. $700 MSRP for 2112 and $850 for 2312...

is there any justification for spending the extra 150??

I see that it has a couple more features ....

- Advanced GUI
- 105W/chan vs 90 on 2112.

Is there anything else? Is this enough to justify the $150? To be honest this is my first AVR I have purchased for my home theater my last being a Sony HTIB setup... Just want to make sure I put my money into the best place...

Thx

definitely go with the 3312ci in a room that size, especially if you are a "keep it for a long time" kind of guy. IMHO before you look for better speakers, add another subwoofer. A room that size will swallow up a single little sub.
The built in rear surrounds are in the ceiling, unfortunately, but they seem to be alright. And for as small as the Atlantic 173 sub is, it packs a pretty solid wallop, IMO. But you're probably right that another sub would help considerably.

Interesting, although I am constrained by having the built in surrounds in the ceiling above my seating position, and I don't think I can get approval from key household members to reconfigure or add additional speakers to the side or behind. The room is a "great room" with a combined living room/kitchen and I'd have to wire under the carpet to get speakers behind or to the side of the couch. The main seating position is basically dead center of the room.

The 4311CI - MSRP = $1999.99
The 3312CI - MSRP = $ 999.99
I barely have the budget to reach out and get the 3312CI, but thanks for the input. Plus, I'm unlikely to be adding any speakers in the near future (I might change my speakers, but it is now doubtful I'll ever move beyond a 5.1 setup). Plus, after my Onkyo fried, I'm afraid of investing 2k in a receiver and having it die on me just out of warranty. Probably an unjustified fear, but I was pissed when the Onkyo died.

It also has upscaling for non HD sources. I ended up getting the 2112 though because it's much cheaper and I basically only use HD sources, plus the wattage difference is only a .5db difference by my calculations.

ughhh just got the receiver, and I assumed zone 2 would have the speaker wire connections like zone 1 does, alas they are RCA. Do I need to use a Speaker Wire to RCA adapter to get the 2nd zone audio working with the receiver?
Found one at Monoprice, but now I guess I need to buy a soldering gun just for this, oh and learn how to solder.

Am I missing something? Is there something else I can try?

no, that's not gonna work... you can't hook up your speakers to a line level output...

you need to connect those outputs to an amplifier, and then an amplifier to the speakers...

edit: which unit do you have? isn't there an amp assign option to use a pair of the speaker binding posts for zone 2?

It's a 7.1 AVR so as long as you've only got a 5.1 setup in your main zone you can use the Surr Back/Amp Assign posts for powered Zone 2.

OHHH THANK YOU! I don't even have speakers in the main zone yet, just bought this receiver with the plans to get some. I will be fine with 5.1 when the time comes!

Yup .... in fact as the vast majority of owners only have a 5.1 setup, the factory default setting for the AMP ASSIGN setting is Zone 2.

new member here and I cannot thank jdsmoothie and a few other vital members here enough for all of their dedication and support.

After reading 21 pages of this thread, I decided to go with the 2112 and am VERY excited about this AVR.

I redeemed quite a few of my Citi Thank you Points and will be getting JR gift certificates to cover the lower price that I was quoted on the phone so hopefully they'll arrive before this supposed rate increase.

and to think... I originally started my search thinking I was going to get a Yamaha receiver.

Since I'm saving money by using my points, I decided to pick up some Polk Monitor 70 speakers and a CS2 center channel while I was at it.
Should be fun once it's all complete

Is Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD MA still possible with 5.1 speakers (or is it downmixed as DTS 5.1)?

I'll have to look into a better media player than the WDTV.

Okay folks ... it's official. Denon has confirmed that MSRP will be going up on the 1912, 2112CI, 2312CI, and 3312CI effective June 12. Although the new rates are not yet known for sure, the increase will average about $100 per model apparently due to "the earthquake (in Japan) and the cost pressures as a result of that disaster".

If you have pre-ordered prior to that date, the resellers will most likely honor that pre-order purchase price.

correct, TrueHD or DTS-MA is just a "container" for the lossless PCM audio

The number of speakers is irrelevant, DTS-MASTER could be 2 channels, 5 channels, 7 channels... the point is LOSSLES vs LOSSY encoding.

MKVs usually have DTS that is downmixed at 1.5mb per second, but it still sounds very good, and it's pretty hard to tell a difference between an actual Blu-ray and an MKV. The PS3 sends the DTS signal to the receiver, so instead of it saying Multi Channel In on the receiver it'll say DTS instead. The newest version of PS3 Media Server has worked with every MKV I've thrown at it, and the MKVs can either be streamed in real time, or you can copy them to the PS3.

Thanks for clarifying that Slickman & batpig - Sounds like the PS3 with PS3 media server is a good bit of kit.

I also wanted to make sure lossless transport was possible when playing a BR disc in the PS3 as well, as I would assume that the Denon should do the decoding if it receives an LPCM signal over HDMI. Otherwise the receiver won't be doing any decoding (just receiving a multichannel signal)?

^^
LPCM "is" the decoded audio file by the PS3 which is passed to the AVR (no further decoding required by the AVR) and why the AVR reads "Mult Ch In" as it has no way of knowing what the original compressed file format was ... DD or DTS.

Current MSRP is $599.99 correct, your saying it is going up to $699.99 (for the 2112CI)?

How'd you guys get it for $499, on my computer it says $599. I only paid $532 so I wasn't that far off, but still. I got mine on hookedontronics.com and used a coupon code.

Do you have the newest version that just released like 1-2 weeks ago? With the older version only like half my MKVs worked, but now with the new version all my MKVs work perfect.

All you do is call and ask. I've called 3 or 4 authorized sellers, and each has quoted me a price of $499.

Looks like I need to pull the trigger before the suggested increase.

Did you buy a 3rd party warranty as well as you won't have a valid warranty buying from an unauthorized reseller?
