The Denon 3312 is a great receiver, and if you plead a bit (and move fast!), you shouldn't have too much trouble getting it for ~$800 from Electronics Expo. Next week the prices go up, and at some point I have little doubt Denon is going to ream EE for these sales, so you may as well take advantage of it while you can!

After that start saving for some better speakers, which can be added over time to greatly improve your sound. The urgency is for the receiver, if the 3312 is the one you want, because these prices won't be here for long.

Another thought, re speakers, is to consider the used market. There are some serious bargains out there. You can get something MUCH better than what you have now for peanuts if you're willing to go used. If you decide you want something different or better later, you're not out much money, so it's not so painful to start upgrading further as funds permit.

thanks for the feedback. i am worried that the price will jump up and not return to levels like these for many months. i'm also worried i'll drop $800 and not notice any difference at all in my home theatre experience and be out $800.

i had not considered used stuff. i have bad luck in general, so buying used always scares me. i'm strongly considering some DIY speaker projects in the near future. i believe the value in some good DIY setups is also pretty good.

thanks

Can someone comment on the 2112 vs. the 3312? I am not looking for a list of features, but I have a 5.1 setup with 2 tower speakers up front. I also have a second zone with two speakers that I run off a second amp. I am mostly concerned that the 2112 will not be powerful enough to drive the 5.1 setup that I have. I do not believe I have 4 ohm speakers (which would be a problem I know) because a Denon amp is powering the system now. I am not at home/do not know exactly what I have in terms of speakers/the model of the receiver because I inherited this equipment with a new home and did not purchase it myself.

Just wanted to let everyone know that, despite my postings last nigh, today I was able to run Audyssey, as well as get all my inputs working!

I have a question, though: If I connect a DVD player to the DVD HDMI input and connect a WII to the DVD component inputs and DVD red/white audio jacks, is the 3312 supposed to output the DVD player when it's turned on, but display the WII when it's on and the DVD's off?

Similarly, what about if, instead of a WII, I connected another DVD's DVI video to the 3312's DVD HDMI via a DVI>HDMI adapter and the same DVD's audio to the 3312's DVD optical audio input. Seems like my XR-V663 would do this (i.e., play more than one device through an input, just give priority to HDMI over Component, etc.)?

just ordered a 3312 from electronics expo.

didn't do as good as some other prices mentioned on here, but they only had something like 3 left (down from 8 the previous time i called) so i bit the bullet as it seems everyone is selling out and restock times have been quoted as long as 30 days to me. and i hear these deep discounts below msrp are not going to last long because of upcoming restrictions from denon.

it was a shocker when they sales guy said my credit card was declined but apparently he just typed in the info wrong, as it went through the next time.

i've never bought a reciever (just few home-theatre-in-a-box setups) so i'm hoping this is worth the plunge...

For most 8 ohm speakers the 2112 will be plenty depending on the room size. I went from a Denon 1508 to a Denon 3310 and the extra power made no difference for me. The 1508 had plenty of power for my system so the 3310 just added some more head room. I don't think you would find a difference in sound quality between the 2112 and 3312 as the both use MultiEQ XT. You would have to move up to the 4311 to get an audible improvement in my opinion.

What about NHt absolute tower speakers which have an 8 ohm average 4 min?

I don't know about that. Most speakers I see are around 90 db or higher sensitivity and 8 ohm. The NHTs you mentioned are only 86db and would be a little more difficult to push. I would have no problem with some Klipsch RF7s or Paradigm Monitor 11s on a 2112 but those are both very efficient speakers. The room size also has a lot to do with it as does how loud you listen.

I thought the 2112 did not use MultiEQ XT?

EDIT: I see it does. Ok I should be fine then I figure. Especially since the receiver is rated at 90 watts per channel for 7 channels and I am only using 5...

Check the styrofoam packaging from the box. The mic may be in a little white box stuffed in there as others are reporting. Apparently, easy to miss.

And based on the responses to the guy with the 2112 who nearly tossed out his mic with the packaging, no, other receivers mics are not calibrated the same and will not work.

I have 5 NHT SuperZero 2.0 satellites that are rated at 86dB sensitivity, and my current 75 watt x 7 receiver pushes them just fine.

the mics are the same DM-A409 model so no worries, but you should still have a mic in the 3312ci box.

not true, all Denon AVR's have used the same DM-A409 mic since the xx09 models.

you can also use the current Onkyo mic (ACM-1h) which is the same thing, but in a gray plastic package instead of black. They are all the same mic, designed and produced by Audyssey for Onkyo/Denon.

i've never seen/heard audessey in action - will it make my crappy speakers sound noticably better? can anyone comment on that asap so i can make a decision before everyone sells out of these receivers?

looks like you already bought.... but to be perfectly honest, an $800 receiver is sort of a waste if you aren't willing to upgrade your speakers too. You could have gotten a 2112 for nearly half the price and had similar sound quality.

Unless there is some specific reason you wanted the 3312ci, if it's not too late, I would recommend switching the order to a cheaper model, and allocate money to SPEAKERS instead. Spending that same $800 on a 2112ci and a Energy Take Classic 5.1 speaker package will almost certainly sound better than a 3312ci with your crappy Sony HTIB speakers.

The 3312ci will be a great receiver, no doubt, so if you are willing to start upgrading speaker soon than go with it, but if you are just going to use those HTIB speakers for a long time, probably was a waste.

read previous posts and looked thru the styrofoam...sure enough. it was in there. Nice to have the forum! I will be leaning on it this weekend when I set up this 3312CI

But couldn't it be the same model mic, but tweaked for each model uniquely?? From the Audyssey FAQ:

Quote:

Can I use any mic for MultEQ? Can I use a mic from my previous AVR on my new AVR?
No. The Audyssey mic that was included with your AVR has been specially calibrated to your AVR model. Using another microphone for your MultEQ calibration will not produce accurate results. If you can not find the micophone that was included with your AVR, contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

"How do I update firmware on the 2112?"

(quotes not working right all of a sudden)

Are there any new firmware releases for a brand new receiver already? That would surprise me. I hope Denon is not turning into Microsoft...

Those will work fine with the 3312. You can ALWAYS spend more and upgrade to something better, but whether you "need" to is subjective.
