I bought an 867 last week to replace my dying Dennon. I'm not at ALL experienced in AV DIY and I am going CRAZY trying to get the system to work with my set up. HD Cable box connection looks great but I can't get HDMI to work correctly, DVD and Wii aren't working, and on screen display won't come up. Any ideas where I can get some noob advice on what I may be doing wrong?? The 140+ page manual isn;t doing it for me. Thx

Harmony One works fine with my RX-V867. Previously I had an RX-V663 linked up with the Harmony One. I update my Harmony devices to include the newer AVR. Had no problem.

Below is link to 667 thread (very similar unit) and the poster's journey of discovery on his new modern AVR. Might prove a useful primer. Lots more information on that thread, as the 867 was largely ignored until just the last month or so.

Patience is rewarded on all these new yamahas. I really miss the paper manuals.

good luck

Read the manual again and connect it properly. I had this unit almost 6 months ago and it does everything it is supposed to do and very well. I may just get it again at this price even though it did not have the power I wanted at the time for the price I paid. At the current price I may just get it again as it worked so well and sounded very good until I really got to cranking it. There are some issues such as how it does not show what signal it is getting and the speakers it is using on the display but playing around you can figure this out. Not as good as my Pioneer unit for telling you what is happening in pure direct but that is another unit.

Receiver-Yamaha RX-V867 (On the way...)
Front-Polk Audio Monitor 70
Center-Polk Audio CS2

Sub-Polk Audio PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer

Note: First time posting here so getting used to the forum rules, hope I can post my equipment setup.
First, for MattGT35R,
Did you encounter any Yamaha shut downs with these speakers?
On the 667 thread a post repeats that he couldn't get very far below a gain of -25db into anything before the Y did a protective shut down. He didn't really say anything about SPL or room size, but I figured that with Fronts rated over 250w each, and surrounds at 200w ea, it would be pretty easy to exhaust the Yamaha's sub-600w power supply. Ran out of gas. I just figured he needed an amp. (or a hearing aid) but if yours did fine then maybe that guy has a problem AVR.

Your thoughts please.

Matt,

With a Yamaha MSRP of $800, it'd tend to create a blind spot for a lot of folks.

Exactly. Also, it feels like it lacks power in my bedroom system. I would need to do a receiver swap to be sure though.

Maybe it's unfair to compare it to my RX-Z7.

does silent cinema work with dts-hd and truehd via hdmi? also, would it work with the multichannel analog inputs?

edit: from what I've read so far it looks like I would need to set my br player to decode the lossless audio into multichannel pcm then send that to the receiver for silent cinema to work is that correct?

Yeah, but what are those features?

When I look at the specs of the 867 and the 671, I don't really see much difference.

Haha excellent point, and one that applies to me as well! But not anymore! And as far as issues I never had any. I did quite a bit of 2 channel music playing last weekend at very loud volumes like -5DB and it never even flinched. I have also done a little bit of movie watching at reasonable volumes and seen no issues either. I would have to chalk that up to the AVR or some type of bad wiring.

I copied this from another thread-

The 667 allows 1 position measurement (pg 34 of 144) and the 867 allows up to 8 positions (pg 36 of 144). So for $60 more the 867 can overlay gui on 3d, has better room correction, adds network, second hdmi out, party mode, iphone control of receiver and a nice looking large input dial on front. The power consumption is the same (400 watts). They both miss usb, wide and height speakers (front presence instead), s-video inputs and airplay.

What does Yamaha do for video upscaling (Onkyo uses Faroujda and now Qdeo in the newer models)

And, do the 671 and 867 offer different video upscaling technology? The Yamaha compare on their site doesn't go into that.

Does anyone know if the HDMI output ports are independent? So if I hook up one output to a 1080P TV and the other to a 720P TV, do both outputs drop down to 720?

What if the 720 TV was not on?

Thx

Yes, but I'm talking about comparing the 671 to the 867. Not 667 to 867.

MattGT35R,

Thanks for yours above.
The post with your speaker set-up and encountering Y's protective shut-downs was on the rx-v 765 thread, not the 667 thread as I had said.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post20606632

From your description, you kept things sane by "cranking" a bit on 2-channels only. Sounds doable even with your monsters. I think that the above referenced OP went for all 7 speakers. I don't think that there is any normal priced modern AVR that could feed anywhere near what is needed to push such a collection of 7 speakers to SPL's approaching reference.

The more I learn about the 867, the more I'm tempted to finagle the sale of my 765 and add a little for the two big knobs.

$399 from HHGregg huh? I just called to find out two local stores have two each. I just bought speakers locally, and would love to snag the AVR without waiting for NewEgg to ship. Or risking it being in pieces.

Was the HHGregg marked that price or did you have to haggle? I called one of the stores that had them and they said they are $699, and it would only be that price open box.

I have to pick up my other two towers tonight (didn't have the SUV), I might swing by the HHGregg I didn't call to see if they have the 867. Maybe ask a manager if they would let it go for the $400, or even $429. I'd just like to start setting up tomorrow.

I had to haggle a bit. They were marked $459 on clearance. I told them Best Buy had a Denon AVR-891 I was interested in for $399.99 and I may just get that one. The Denon was also a 800.00 receiver when it first came out too- like the Yamaha. The salesman got the manager and the manager said I could have the 867 for $399. Not sure if all HHgregg work that way, but my local one was very pleasant to deal with.

As I said earlier, if you're waiting for this to drop some more at the egg, you may not get it, it's being cleared out for the this year's models. It happens every year... My philosophy is either buy close to the beginning when you get the use of the features longer, or at the end when the price drops a lot.

From what very little I can figure out, the power/amplifier circuitry between the 765 and 667 to 867 are very very similar. Power supply rating, amp ratings etc. seem damn near identical. In 2008/2009 the 765's were the very beginning of the "separate" amplifier channel models, now the 667 starts that. The 867 seems to carry the same number details for the most part.

On a side note, back in the day the 765 was coincidentally the lowest model number made in Malaysia instead of China. I think that that holds true with the 667 today. The back of your 867 says it is made where?

Still mulling on the cost/benefits a domestic crisis.
