When you toggle through the sound modes and go all channel mode, does sound come out of your back surrounds? (assuming those are the ones that aren't playing in 7.1 mode)

I get sound out of all 7 speakers. A couple of examples playing a 7.1 source (m2ts file channel check from Hunger Games):

All Channel: 7 Speakers
THX Cinema: 7 speakers. However the rear surround speakers share the sound with the side surround speakers (e.g., the same sound that comes out of RIght Surround comes out of Right Rear Surround and vice versa).
Pure Audio: 5 speakers. Rear surround speakers silent, the sound that's intended for them comes out of the side speakers.

So this makes me think it's something up with the input signal since it's being read and treated as 5.1.

Does any one know how to get feedback from the RS232 port. I can not get any return data. All my other RS232 controlled devices automatically returns data.

To answer my own question, it is possible. The settings that worked for me are either:

1. Hardware -> HDMI -> HDMI Control(RIHD) = On
or
2. Above setting disabled (Off) and Audio TV Out = On

Note that option #2 only works when Monitor Out is set to Both. #1 also works when it's set to Both(Main) or Both(Sub). The other advantage of #1 seems to be that the Speaker Setup menu doesn't get disabled.

New question: Does the OSD work for the secondary HDMI output? I can only get it to work with the primary HDMI.

Thank you JChin. I wonder what's the logic in this limitation? One would expect that sending the same signal to both outputs would mean just mirroring the same. I believe that's what a simple HDMI splitter would do.

I checked my serial on their website last week and was told I was not impacted - do I need to call maybe? At work now so don't have the serial on me but I can try again later tonight...

From what I understand, you should do it again & check off network problems as well as the sound issue. That should work. Let us know.

I recently contacted onkyo bc my receiver had the dreaded no audio/network issue. Pasted below is the info they sent me. Good luck

"At your request, I am sending you the following information regarding our Loss of Audio/Network Customer Care Program.

We would like to assist you. Please follow this link an supply the requested information to verify that your unit qualifies: http://www.onkyousa.com/Support/service_info.php .
If your unit qualifies, a box and prepaid shipping label will be sent out. I just sent mine in with the same issues. Make sure you checked hat you bought it new and you must check both no sound and no network. You may want to double check that your network is indeed not working before you send it off. It takes about 2 weeks for the entire process.

My receiver was repaired twice for the HDMI issue, and now (after it's no longer in warranty) all SPDIF digital outs are dead, both optical and coaxial. Is this a known issue?

I'm not sure it's worth fixing since I mostly want to use those outs to troubleshoot streams not being detected properly by the receiver (e.g. as Multichannel instead of AC3 or DTS).

Question regarding streaming music from my iPhone...

So even though the 709's not supposed to have AirPlay, my iPhone shows up on the App and I can play that music wirelessly via my Network.

But it only will play in alphabetical order from wherever I start, even though the iPhone is set to Shuffle. Is it possible to Shuffle for this use, and of course, how?

I just got the "no sound" issue yesterday and temporarily fixed it with the hair dryer trick but today I have no video from hdmi bluray player. OSD works but no matter what hdmi port I put the player in I get nothing. From reading it seems many are getting issues again even after sending it in for repairs, is it worth trying to see if they will repair it (it's over 2 years old) or just try to find a better quality receiver? How much are the repairs if they have to replace the hdmi board? What's a good replacement receiver?

Edit: apparently the video issue is coming from the player (Sony bdp-s5100) after I hooked it directly to the tv, never had that problem before but now no audio or menu from it. The receiver still requires the hair dryer trick to recognize speakers.

My 809 has just been sorted. Great service. I chose to take it in to DPC depot on Thursday - had it back Tuesday. It was 2 years out of warranty, so I was delighted.

I hope this is ok to post in this thread as I know there are other threads that address 'no sound' issues on Onkyo HT receivers. I purchased my TX NR709 in April 2012 and it has been trouble free until last week.


I suddenly have fault where there is no sound coming from the front 5 channels. The fault is evident on both analogue and digital inputs. Powered zone 2 works ok. If I let the receiver warm up (10 mins), toggle zone 2 on and off, power cycle (repeat if required) it starts working again.


The receiver is outside of warranty and it was purchased on Amazon.de. I live in Australia and am not confident that I will be able to invoke the product recall provision from our local Onkyo distributor who is notoriously difficult to deal with.


I've read about recapping to solve problems and reflowing solder joints... Can someone please help understand exactly what fault I'm suffering from, if there is a DIY solution and point me to the applicable links? I'm handy enough with a soldering iron to have a go and figure I've got nothing to loose.

Yes... they will send 4K video and they are equipped with upconvert to 4K for lesser quality pictures.

It cannot pass through a 4K signal, but can upscale a lower resolution signal up to 4K/24/30Hz. So if playing a 4K Blu Ray, you'll want to purchase a dual HDMI 4K BDP to pass the video to the TV via one HDMI and the HD audio to the 709 with the other HDMI. You'll also want to ensure both the TV and the BDP are HDCP 2.2.
