Looks like there still the heavyweight champions of AVR, and with .05% BTL !! Onkyo is not cutting any corners like someothers have been doing.

Looks like Europe doesn't get BTL, US units only, too bad. BTL is great if you have big full range front speakers and like your music at "in your face" concert volume levels..

#6 ·
So it seems the main differences between the 3009 and 5009 are: toroidal transformer, more power, anti vibration panels, and DACs. Between the 3008 vs 3009 it looks like Neo X, the video processor/upscaling capabilities, and additional streaming options.

#7 ·
It on Onkyo's website too.

#8 ·
Whats up with the EI transformer on the 3009? Is that the same transformer on the 3008? The weight on the 3009 is identical to the 3008 thats a good sign. Also the price went up on both models.

Leading home entertainment innovator Onkyo is excited to announce the release of its flagship PR-SC5509 network A/V controller and two high-end integrated 9.2-channel A/V receivers - the TX-NR5009 and the TX-NR3009 - to crown its 2011 range of precision crafted audio-visual products for 2011.

The two receivers deliver all the quality you would expect from top of the range home cinema components: vast amounts of clean power, a host of connectivity options for ease and flexibility of use, and powerful, intelligent processing for crystal-clear playback of the very latest A/V formats. The PR-SC5509 network A/V controller, meanwhile, is designed to partner a high-end multi-channel power amp (such as the Onkyo PA-MC5500) and incorporates all of the state-of-the-art processing and connectivity features of the TX-NR5009, minus the amplification. All three components are THX Ultra2 Plus certified for distortion-free playback in large rooms.

When it comes to input options, the TX-NR5009 is hugely versatile. The unit sports eight HDMI inputs (two gold-plated) and two outputs (one gold-plated). Alongside you'll find two USB ports, a Universal Port (for Onkyo peripherals) and an RGB input for video content from a connected PC. Users can also download and install free Onkyo Apps that turn their Android or iPod touch/iPhone into a full-function remote control for these receivers/network controller. As ever a hard-wired Ethernet connection is recommended but an optional UWF-1 wireless LAN adaptor is available for connecting to a home network.

As you might expect the TX-NR5009 has been designed to seamlessly connect to the new generation of user-customized Internet radio stations and streaming music services, including Spotify, last.FM, Napster AUPEO! and vTuner. The receiver is also DLNA 1.5 specified for media streaming and can interface with USB-compatible portable music devices as well as play music straight off a USB thumb drive. Naturally, the unit handles the widest variety of audio formats, including FLAC, WMA Lossless, WAV, AAC, Ogg, MP3, and, for audiophiles, Super Audio CD.

With 9.2 channel operation - and Onkyo's Zone 2/3 capability for fully-powered stereo audio from different sources in two other rooms - users have the flexibility to fine-tune their home cinema set-up to an amazing degree. The task is made that much easier thanks to Audyssey's sophisticated MultEQ XT32 room-correction and equalization technology, designed to deliver an optimum audio performance regardless of a room's shape or acoustics.

Onkyo has been an early adopter of DTS Neo:X, an audio processing technology that allows users to augment a basic 5.1-channel set-up by adding speakers in three main configurations. As implemented in these new receivers, Neo:X can be used to bring out more in the way of subtle ambient sounds or even remove the need to install rear speakers while still delivering a cinema-like experience.

Engineered to set genuinely new performance standards the TX-NR5009 harnesses decades of Onkyo home cinema know-how. Power flows efficiently from a massive high-current toroidal transformer through two 22,000µF audiophile-grade capacitors, with dedicated separate transformers installed to handle audio and video. The system also employs top-quality three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry in its 9 x 220w power stage (being a controller the PR-SC5509 includes the transformers but without the other power amplification features.)

Audio signals received by the TX-NR5009 are refined with PLL jitter-cleaning technology while separate aluminum panels encase the low-resonance chassis to help eliminate vibration. Onkyo's renowned VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) helps achieve a highly accurate level of digital-to-analogue signal conversion the quality of which is easy to hear. Powerful 192 kHz/32-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs on all channels, coupled to a 32-bit DSP chip, contribute to the receiver achieving its prestigious THX Ultra2 Plus certification.

The TX-NR5009's next-generation video processing power is extraordinary. An HQV Vida VHD 1900 processor lies at the heart of the system, and brings standard video images to life in high definition. The chip employs multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit colour-processing, and smooth, motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimise quality and detail. Marvell's Qdeo technology, meanwhile, upscales 1080p video to a full 4K (3840 x 2160), even from sources already upscaled by HQV Vida from lower resolutions to 1080p. This combination of remarkable technology enables the viewer to enjoy spectacular images of unparalleled colour and clarity.

Onkyo's eye for detail extends to providing conveniently backlit remote controllers as well as an overlaid graphical OSD for swift, seamless, and simple adjustment of settings during a program, game, or movie. As user interfaces on A/V products go this is one of the best.

The second integrated A/V receiver model in this release, Onkyo's TX-NR3009, offers many of the advanced features of its more powerful sibling, with a few differences. It employs 24-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs for instance, rather than 32-bit DACs; it forgoes the higher model's gold-plated terminals and, in place of 22,000 µF capacitors and a toroidal transformer, it uses 18,000 µF capacitors and a massive EI-type transformer to deliver 9 x 200w. With this slightly different feature set, the TX-NR3009 manages to deliver a level of cinephile performance nearly equivalent to that of the TX-NR5009, but at a more affordable price point.

Whichever model we're talking about these three new releases demonstrate Onkyo's ongoing commitment to offering innovative, integrated, and high-performance home cinema products to music and film lovers all over the world.

So no 11.2 surround sound at all? not even via external amplification?

If this is true, Onkyo has crossed themselves off my list AGAIN. It looks like the Denon 4311ci is STILL the only receiver to fully implement 11.2 Audyessy DSX. Sad, because I really like the Onkyo's feature set otherwise.

I know that the Integra receivers are essentially the same as the Onkyo receivers, but with some usually-insignificant bells and whistles for custom installation. Indeed, I've read posts on this forum that say the whole Integra line is just marketing & profit margin for dealers.

But no matter how few and marginal the upgraded features may be, there are some differences year after year between the Integra and Onkyo products. Am I being completely naive to hope that the Integra DTR-80.3 might have full 11.2 surround sound when the new line is announced soon?

#12 ·
Is still only 9.2 configuration ! Absolutely disappointed ! I have used Onkyo for 4 generation start from 905 , 906 , 5507 and 5508 ! And this time I cannot move to 5509 because of NO 11.2 support ! So the only option is waiting the new upgraded version of the Denon AVP-A1HD ! It had 12ch pre out ! From the avwatch web site , it can handle 11.1 DSX ! And my 2 JL Audio F113 have a master and slave function , so only one sub pre out is not a problem for me !

#14 ·
Yea I don't see anything much that makes me regret getting a 809. Sure I'd love BTL and Direct DSD but come on the price difference no way justifies it. Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 would've been nice too but man that's one hell of a price curve for them

Yes they have. See post above. Also no 11.2 Preouts and no Audyssey Pro?

Looks like cut corners to me.

At least Denon with their 3-4year old AVP-A1HD are getting Audyssey Pro via an paid Hardware upgrade in October, along with 3D, DTS Neo:X, DSX, etc.

So I beleive Onkyo, like Denon with their *new* range, seem to be dropping features (connectors, etc) to meet price points. Which is dissapointing on both their behalves.

That is annoying, but missing things like composite/SVideo and Tape inputs, which I probably will never use, isn't as bad as missing new features, like full 11.2 DSX surround. 9.2 (which all the current high-end Onkyo/Integras can do) probably sounds just as good, but knowing those 2 rear speakers are not there would annoy my inner obsessive geek. And let's face it, anyone spending over a grand on a reciever probably has a bit of obsessive geek in them. And alot of audio enjoyment is in our head, it's a VERY subjective endeavour. Which explains $2000 power cords and Monster Cable... and I bet the rear speakers in a 11.2 setup provide a bit more than those things.

here is the price info and release date info

The Onkyo TX-NR5009 will have a suggested retail price of $2,899 with the TX-NR3009 will be offered for $2,199. They will ship to dealers in the beginning of September.

US release info

http://www.us.onkyo.com/press_releases.cfm?id=226

08/22/11 - UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (8/22/11) -- Leading home entertainment innovator, Onkyo, announces the release of two flagship high-end network 9.2-channel THX Ultra2 Plus-certified A/V receivers—the TX-NR5009 and the TX-NR3009—to complete its line of precision audio-visual products for 2011. As the top models in Onkyo's line, these receivers deliver the power, performance, sophisticated processing, exceptional connectivity, and quality that audio-video enthusiasts have come to expect from Onkyo.

Both receiver models include major upgrades from last year, including the use of the latest HQV-Vida and Marvel Qdeo video processors, new DTS Neo:X dimensional surround processing, Dolby Volume, and new streaming internet radio channels. Onkyo receivers continue to offer more internet music options than any other brand in the industry

When it comes to input options, the TX-NR5009 and TX-NR3009 are extremely versatile, sporting eight HDMI® inputs and two outputs, plus a full range of legacy analog and digital AV connections. New media connections include an Ethernet port, two USB ports, a Universal Port for Onkyo peripheral devices, and an RGB input for video content from a connected PC. Onkyo also offers an optional UWF-1 wireless LAN adaptor that turns the front panel USB port into a home internet access point. Users can also download and install free applications that turn their Android or iPod touch/iPhone into a full-function remote control to control the receiver.

Both receivers are designed to connect to the new generation of user-customized Internet radio stations and streaming music services, including those from Spotify, AUPEO!, Pandora, Last.fm, Rhapsody, Napster, Mediafly, Slacker, Sirius XM, and vTuner. The receiver is also DLNA 1.5 certified; it can interface with USB-compatible portable music devices, such as iPods, and and play music straight off a USB thumb drive. Naturally, the unit can handle a wide variety of audio formats, including FLAC, WMA Lossless, WAV, AAC, Ogg, MP3, and, for audiophiles, Super Audio CD.

With terminals for 11 speakers, the nine amplifier channels can be tasked to power a wide variety of front, surround, height, bi-amped, or remote-zone loudspeakers depending on the users needs. Onkyo makes it easy to fine-tune all these speakers by providing the latest Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 room-correction and equalization technology, which perfects audio performance regardless of a room’s shape or acoustics.

Onkyo was the first AV receiver manufacturer to introduce DTS Neo:X™, the industry’s first 2.0/5.1/6.1/7.1-to- 9.1/11.1 conversion technology within a single algorithm. This technology allows users to augment a basic 5.1-channel set-up by adding speakers in various combinations of height, wide, and surround channels. As implemented on the TX-NR5009, Neo:X can bring out subtle ambient sounds or even work around the need to install rear speakers to deliver a cinema-like experience. Like last years' models, both receivers include the related surround processing of Audyssey DSX, and Dolby ProLogic IIz.

The next-generation video capabilities of these new receivers are the result of a tag-team effort from two extraordinary new video processors. The HQV® Vida™ VHD 1900 processor lies at the heart of the system, and brings standard video images to life in high definition. The chip employs multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color-processing, and smooth, motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimize quality and detail. Marvell’s Qdeo™ technology upscales 1080p video to a full 4K (3840 x 2160), even from sources already upscaled by HQV Vida from lower resolutions to 1080p. This remarkable technology treats the viewer to spectacular images of unparalleled color and clarity, provides enhancement of low-resolution streaming video, and facilitates individual ISFccc video calibration capabilities for all video sources.

Onkyo's eye for detail extends to conveniently backlit remote controls and an overlaid graphical OSD for swift, seamless, and simple adjustment of settings during a program, game, or movie.

Both receivers use Onkyo's proven WRAT (wide range amplifier technology) power stages and three-stage inverted Darlington topology to deliver high power with low distortion and exceptional high current capability. Audio signals on are refined by PLL jitter-cleaning technology and Onkyo's VLSC™ contributes to an extremely crisp digital-to-analog signal conversion. Separate aluminum panels encase the low-resonance chassis to help eliminate vibration and microphonics.

Onkyo’s TX-NR3009 uses 24-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs for each channel and a high-current power supply with large 18,000 µF capacitors and a large EI transformer.

The TX-NR5009's amplifier takes the whole issue of amplifier and power supply performance up a notch. Power flows efficiently from a massive high-current toroidal transformer through two 22,000 µF capacitors, with dedicated transformers for audio and video. The digital audio section employs Powerful 192 kHz/32-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs on all channels, coupled to a 32-bit DSP chip. These contribute to the receiver achieving prestigious THX® Ultra2 Plus™ certification and a level of sound quality that rivals that of many separate component amplifiers.

These two new releases demonstrate Onkyo’s ongoing commitment to offering innovative, integrated, and high-performance home theater products to music and film lovers all over the world.

The Onkyo TX-NR5009 will have a suggested retail price of $2,899 with the TX-NR3009 will be offered for $2,199. They will ship to dealers in the beginning of September.

So let me get this straight, no significant difference between my 3008 and 3009 (same with 5008 and 5009) except for Marvell Qdeo 4K (which doesn't do any of us any good for at least the next 5-10 years), Neo-X (no significant SQ difference with Audyssey DSX), and a few insignificant streaming and input/output features, all for more money.

No thanks, Onkyo, see you next year.

I don't get why this would make anyone upset. Onkyo upgraded and future proofed their video chipset. added and first to use Neo-X. Upgraded their power and added more apps. So we have video, sound, power, and app upgrades what else do you want? Is their specific chip sets and features you are looking for? I think they did good plus being the first to the market with Neo-X. Not much has changed in the AV world nothing to make you jump out of your seat and drool to have something right now. I am just questioning this not mad or anything just want to understand more.

Um perhaps because I pay nearly 4 times less than those MSRP and got 95% of the same features with my 809. I literally laughed reading that write up.

Nobody pays MSRP. These units will be discounted. I paid $1150 for my 3008 which was about 45% off of MSRP.

Not knocking the 809, but the 3008/9 and 5008/9 are in another league entirely. They feature Audyssey MultEQ XT32 which is significant step above even XT especially if you run you mains full range and it really benefits users that run multiple subs. Also the higher units are true THX units. Select2Plus is okay in knowing you got the THX audio processes, but Ultra2Plus means the amps are very capable of driving difficult loads.

I also see no real good reason to go for the 09 if you already have a 07 or 08.

I paid 699 plus tax for my 3007 @ BB it was open box and only missing the mic, I just use my denon 1909 mic as they are the same spec. Used my AMX cc and have an extra year or two on the warranty. I did the firmware update in the first week, just to be sure it didn't screwed it up, had 30 days for a full refund.

I can see this if you have a fairly new receiver you might not want to jump to a new one. Mine however is 11+ years old now I could really use the upgrade badly.

It depends on what you value. Prior to my 3008, I purchased a 1007 due to a great deal I got with Bing cashbask and Tigerdirect.com. Now since I bought that unit I upgraded my LCR array to 3-DefTech CLR3000s. These speakers have a built in sub and can play down to 40Hz, but to me they just did not sound that good in the bass department. I decided to upgrade to the 3008 to get XT32. I found the XT32 helped produce a much better soundstage with my CLR3000s XO'd @40Hz. XT32 has the same resolution for the lowend in all channels where XT only features full resolution in the lowend on the subwoofer channel.

I still have the 1007, but to me the 3008 was a significant upgrade.
