I paid about the same for a refurbed 589 about a year ago and it has worked just fine. I don't use it for HT - just for stereo TV radio and computer sounds. The Mult EQ is probably worth buying it for $50 more than the Sony IMO.
I've bought lots of refurbished products over the years - I currently have the Denon - one Harman Kardon 3390 in the bedroom two channel setup - and just bought an Onkyo 8255 for a garage stereo setup - its refurbished too. Many of the refurbished electronics are returns to big stores and not something that broke down and had to be replaced. In many cases it was the original buyer that couldn't figure out how to use it - or decided it didn't sound any better than what they were going to replace.
And for that price you could take two tries at getting a good one and still be ahead of the Sony. JMO of course - I could be wrong.
