New to the forums.

I'm looking for some advice on choosing between Denon models. I can get a AVR-891(last year's model) for about $20 more than a AVR1712(this years). Since the 891 is supposed to be the equivalent of the 2311ci, it seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I can't recognize any glaring pros of the 1712 over the 891 other than purely being newer. The 891 has several pro's over the 1712 from what I can tell though. From what I can tell, the 891 upconverts the sources and sends them over HDMI so I only have to have the one cable going up to the TV and don't have to bother switching inputs on the TV. Although I don't have many non-HDMI sources, this seems like for legacy support(like if I ever wanted to play N64 or something). Additionally, the 891 has higher power rating and an USB input, both are not too important to me but always nice extras. They both have 6 HDMI in and 2 year warranties.

Is there something that I am missing completely that would make the 1712 better?

Yes, ... it uses the more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT, although if you prefer the better features of the 891, then go with it.
