I currently have the AVR Pioneer VSX-74TXVi and has worked well for a few years now. I'm purchasing a new Plasma (Panny GT30) and was wondering if I should consider a new reciever. If yes, why?

I'd say get a newer receiver only if you want more surround channels or 3D decoding capability. Otherwise that receiver should still perform pretty well. Are you able to use the lossless surround codecs with that in your set-up?

Thanks. I don't require more surround channels. My TV is 3D, do I need 3D decoding capability? What does this give me?

What is lossless surround codecs, the ability to support multiple codecs and switch between them automatically?

What about HDMI? Do I need to consider version differences?

Yes, you need the 3D decoding (that would come from your Blu-ray player and receiver working together) to enjoy 3D. Lossless refers to the True HD and DTS-HD MA soundtracks that are found on blu-ray disks now. And the newer 3D players use HDMI 1.4 (Which requires the HDMI cables specific for that).

The VSX-74TXVi does not support True HD and DTS-HD.

OK so the HDMI 1.4 spec is cable specific only?
