I can get the 1712 for $310 and 2112ci for $450.

Besides Airplay feather on the the 2112ci, are other differences between the two?

If it's just airplay, I think I'll just get the 1712 since I'll have an htpc connected to the receiver.

Refer to post #2 in the Denon XX12 Owner's thread linked in my sig for a comparison of the various models. The 2112CI includes networking, ability to do firmware updates, Airplay, video upconversion, and 3 years warranty, however, uses the same version of Audyssey MultEQ XT as does the 1712, so the audio fidelity will likely be the same. If you don't need the added features, then the 1712 should serve you well.

Call for pricing on Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Onkyo, Klipsch, Def Tech, Oppo, Parasound
** Think the AVR is defective?  Reset the microprocessor 4-5 times.

Nice!

I skimmed the manual for the 1712 and the 2112, and noticed that both have zone 2 pre-outs. Are they different or is that the same? it wasn't mentioned in the Denon owner's thread.

The 2112CI is the lowest model that has Zone 2 preouts ... however, the 1712 is the lowest model that can do Zone 2 with a 5.1 setup in the main zone using the SBL/SBR speaker connections.

jdsmoothie, can the 1712 do 7.1 in the main zone and 2 in the zone 2 if using the pre-outs, or is it limited to 5.1 as soon as one uses zone 2 (same question for the 2112 if there is a difference).

^^
As I noted in the post above yours, the 1712 doesn't have Zone 2 preouts, rather only the "CI" models do, and yes, when an AVR has Zone 2 preouts it can do 7.1 in the main zone and still use the Zone 2 preouts.

Oops. My bad. I'm getting a 2112CI. It's $140 more than a 1712 right now but considering that dedicating an Airport Express to the 1712 is another $70 (refurb), it's just $70 for the extra features and extra year of warranty. That seems reasonable.

Thanks for the help!
