My old Sony surround sound receiver died, and need to replace with a new one. I am not an audiophile and am on a budget, so I am just looking for a low-end receiver that will give me surround sound again.

Really only must-have is HDMI pass through (including 3D) with at least 4 HDMI Inputs

I have it narrowed it down to the Denon AVR-1312 ($179) and the Onkyo TX-NR509 ($229).

Both have 4 HDMI inputs and anything else I'll probably need. The Onkyo is intriguing for another $50 as it is network connected and has the iPhone control app, as well as a few other features. From what I have read here though, there seems to be some HDMI pass through issues. Is this valid? Reliability is a big factor in my purchase.

Any advice would be appreciated, i am torn between the two at the moment.

Do you mean the HDMI pass through as switching the AVR off and still passing video/audio through the HDMI.
If that's what you mean the Onkyo 509 does that no problems. At least the one I just installed does.
As mentioned the Onkyo is networked and the Denon is not which is a big plus for me.
I'm using Roomie to control everything and it works great. Live feedback is a big plus.

I would easily take the 509 because you get the internet streaming feature, as well as Audyessey 2EQ which is better than no Audyssey at all like on the 1312.

The NR509 just has a better feature set than the Denon 1312.

The Denon 1312 is the only current Denon model that doesn't feature HDMI pass through nor any auto EQ program so if these are your only choices, the Onkyo 509 is the better choice.

Thanks guys. By pass through I just meant standard pass through. Standby pass through isn't a big deal to me as I don't see a need at the moment to use the TV speakers or anything with the receiver off.

Regardless, the 509 is still the better choice (even if it wasn't network capable).

I appreciate the advice, now to see if I can find a better price than 229 before I pull the trigger. Thanks again!!
