I have an MX121 and an MC205 along with a Panasonic Plasma TC-P65ZT60. The sound you are hearing is from the amp itself. If is generally related to the TV creating field current into the amp. McIntosh has admitted to my local reps that the MC205, MC207 and MC8207 are not particularily well shielded due to the amount of electronics that go into those units.

I myself had exactly the same noise as you probably describe. I tested a number of power filters and most of them are not good: Monster, Panamax, Thurman, etc. All the same. Try a PS Audio PS Power Plant P5 or P10. This is a power plant. It converts the AC to pure DC, filters it and then recreates a perfect 120 AC sine wave. This is the only power unit which solved my problem. It is not in the same league as all the other power "conditioners".

Try turning your TV OFF completely. The noise will probably disappear.

In terms of DC Offset, I spent some time with the McIntosh engineers trying to resolve the problem. The issue about DC Offset is that it is very hard to measure. McIntosh will tell you that if you put an Ohm Meter across the AC leads and measure DC, you will measure the DC Offset. This is actually incorrect. I measured DC offsets of multiple power grids all leading to the same value.

The Power Plant fixes this because it recreates a perfect and pure sine wave with less than 0.1% THD.

I hope this helps,

Pierre

My MX121/MC205 combo is dead quiet. This is with a Panny 65VT50 in the mix. You might be right that my PS Audio P5 is partly the reason for the low noise floor. That and everything using XLRs.

Well I sold my Integra DHC80.3 processor!!! Great processor but just wanting to try something different

I am thinking maybe a MX121 next but wonder ..Integra had xt32 and MX121 just regular Audessessy.

I'm also looking at the Anthem 50v 3D which has only 7.1 and ARC room correction which I'm told is really good and better than Audessessy. Also looking at the much lower cost but great reviews Marantz AV8801 and Yamaha CX-A5000

Thoughts?

Thanks I see that now.....I'm still up in arms about either getting a Yamaha CX-A5000, Marantz AV8801 or the less featured McIntosh MX121

Thank you Pierre. This is my exact problem. It seems that PS audio works for you and Scirica.  I will look into this. The buzz is only a problem when the TV is on.

I also noticed that the issue was dramatically impacted by which circuit/outlet I plugged the plasma in. The P5 is definitely worth looking into. I've also got 6 PS Audio Noise Harvesters on the way. I'll report back when I have some time experimenting with those and their impact on the noise floor. Honestly, my system is so whisper-quiet right now, even with the VT50 plugged in that I'm not sure what they'll do...but they can't hurt!

Yes, I did notice that in my tests. If the plasma is on the same circuit as the MC205, the potential for noise is higher.

The following is a link to someone who describes this problem quite perfectly. Although, I did not agree with his solution...

Yes. This is the situation. Ps audio told me the p5 will remove dc on the mains as it creates a perfect ac power source. They are on back order so I will wait till mine arrives.

I expect you to have the same experience as me. Dead quiet. I put my ear up to one of my mains the other night in the darkened room and actually bumped my head on the speaker. I expected to hear it humming long before my head hit!

The sound that is created by this combination of equipment is not from the speakers. It is a transformer hum which typically oscillates but not at a regular interval. In fact, you can disconnect all cables from the power amp and just keep the power and you will hear the transformer hum. Turn off the Panasonic plasma and the hum goes away.

Inexpensive power filtering solutions such as Monster, Panamax, etc do absolutely nothing for the noise. I also tested Torus Power (AVR-20) and that did not help much. The only product which worked to remove the transformer hum was the PS Audio P5 / P10. Although I tested a P5, I ended up purchasing a P10 since I didn't want the power plant running at 80% capacity...

Thanks Pierre. Yes the buzz comes only from the amp. Will a P5 be enough to power the mc8207?

Not sure how much this helps, but my P5 runs at about 60% capacity and I have the MC205, 65VT50, a 2-channel audiosource zone 2 amp, the MX121 and some additional sources. All outlets on the P5 are in use. I'd love to upgrade to a P10 for even more headroom, but I'm very comfortable with the current (and current) load.

I had a bit more stuff on mine: MX121, MC205, MR88, D100, 65ZT60, Popcorn Hour A-410, Sonos, Apple TV, Denon BluRay. But the biggest draw on the unit is the plasma.

But come to think about it, first try with just the McIntosh gear on the P5. Leave the plasma on the wall (or other power filter). That will probably solve your problem and leave more headroom for the MC8207. That is how I run mine. The plasma is currently not on the P10.

I agree on the approach; biggest draw will def be the plasma. However, there are visible benefits to running the VT 50 off the P5 and you'd miss out on that. I understand right now eliminating the buzz is your primary objective.

I've read that there is a loss of dynamics with regenerators.

Do you guys have any issues?
