I feel really bad for the people who spent this kind of money on what now is a paper weight..

Classe SSP800 did the same and Anthem the Same and Bryston the same and the list goes on..

Why do people continue to buy into Pre pros and companies that don't keep promises ? No idea

Theta Digital and the Casablanca still remains 100% upgradable and they have 4K support and have had it for a year..

There is always a new format or gadget right around the corner. All pre pros are in danger of this. Is 4k even really 4k yet? Arent they still hashing out how the real 4k is going to be delivered? I have even heard talk that true 4k will require 2 blu ray discs because 1 cannot hold that much data. So the BD is going to be obsolete as well. Now there are the new surround modes with speakers that will point at the ceiling. More gadgets that will required new hardware.

This is why so many manufacturers have stopped playing the pre pro game. R&D something for years and its obsolete the day it hits the sales floor.

I like the Cary Cinema 12 for this reason. Signal gets passed through with no tinkering. Sometimes less is more.

Now that Mcintosh and D&M have parted ways, who knows what the future of pre pros is for the company.......

Still, so far as they're concerned, I'm sure an all new Atmos/DTS:X/Auro-3D capable device would be more cost-effective if designed from scratch. It'll need much more powerful computational hardware to support roomEQ for the additional speaker channels, for example, as well as more XLR connections on the back panel. By the time you're done with that kind of an upgrade, only the front panel would be left, if that.
My response was to the person who posted above me. I'm not looking to upgrade my MX121. Totally agree with your point though.

I read a review on this unit. It was measured at over 125 s/n ratio. If that is correct, it is a very very good number. The Cary Cinema 12 is 108db.

There are 4K blu-rays that hold more data.

Last night I was using Airplay to stream a football game from my IPad to the MX-121. I received audio only. Is it possible to also get the video on my display?

Confirmed..... The 121 will not support hdcp 2.2. No upgrades planned. Unit will be replaced by a whole new model to support the new formats.

Yes, and it is now on the website under New Products. The MX122 has arrived!

I realize there is very little chance for an upgrade to the 121, but I'm wondering if they can at least incorporate some of the new services via a firmware upgrade, namely SiriusXM in my case.

The new MX122. How long will it last before a new HDMI format turns it into a fossil? HDMI is the worst thing thing ever introduced into the audio industry.

Optical Output. Has anyone tried using the optical output on the MX121? I am trying to connect a pair of headphones. I can get an analog signal using cables connected to the VCR output, but I haven't been able to get a signal from the optical output. On other devices, after connecting an optical cable I can usually see a red light shining through the optical cable. Not so when using the optical output on the MX121.

Is there a setting I need to enable to use this feature? I've been scrolling through the menu system and haven't found it. Nothing is in the manual concerning this.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Sorry for the second post. I couldn't figure out how to edit my prior post.

Anyway...the optical output just started working. I went to the back just to clean up some cabling and I noticed the Optical Out port was red. So I plug in a cable and connect that to to headphones and bam...works now. Weird. All set!

Besides the lack of upgradability, how do folks feel about the MX121? I'm looking at purchasing a MX122 and looking for feedback. Mainly the audio side of things as I have a Lumagen Pro to handle most of the video processing. For me a less expensive choice would be the Marantz 8802a. More expensive, likely the MX160 even with its lack of 18 gbps HDMI chips. I'm coming from a Denon AVP (3D version). I will be purchasing in the next month or so. Thanks for any information. SJ

Its current. It supports the latest HDMI/HDCP. It has the latest audio formats.
There arent too many reviews of it floating around just yet.
The Mcintosh is a good choice for those who want good sound quality and music performance over gizmos and gadgets.
Also consider the NAD M17. It has upgrade modules to support the latest HDMI garbage.

Within a couple years Im sure some new HDMI gadget or new sound format will be released. Everything we have today will be obsolete again.

is there any way for me to watch Directv (input thru HDMI into the Mx121) and listen to another source like cd or JRiver, without running a separate Directv video feed to the tv for watching only.
Can a choose a video source to watch and an audio source to hear

In principle it should be possible, since it can be done in the Marantz AV8802. Unfortunately, I can't find any mention of it in the MX121's manual. With Marantz equipment, you first select the audio-only source and then the Options menu lets you select the video source. However, you can't combine two HDMI sources.

I was very curious to know if you can use SPOTIFY with the 121. Is it possible? From the day the this unit was first sold to now, how many firmware updates have there been? Thank you for reading.

I have an MX121 and I find the usability factor very difficult and in fact so bad my wife gives me grief over it. Expensive system she cant use. So I have purchased a universal remote that she didnt like and a HArmony and that has made it better but still not a happy wife.

Since they dont own the firmware they cant maintain it. While I really liked the sound with my B&W 803's and 4s with the MC I am not sure I would buy another programmed piece. The 121 was branded, their music server is branded and these relationships dont seem to last leaving the user with supportable but unsupported hardware. THey just dont have the volume to create a well done piece of software

Yes, simply go to the menu and choose manual setup. Look for device you want to listen to (Example CD) and switch the video input to Sat(or whichever input you have Directv) for that device. You also have to run a component cable from Directv box to MX-121,in addition to HDMI from DTV to MX121 and hdmi from mx121 to TV.
You can watch DTV and listen to any other source this way. Not very clear in manual.

I'm unpacked and installed a new MX121 today. I'm very impressed with the sound quality for both movies and music.

Why the need for the additional component cable? I have my computer hooked up to the MX121 via HDMI and would like to continue using the computer whilst listening to a CD. The PC is connected to the BD HDMI input on the MX121, I've chosen CD as the input, and switched the video input to BD for that device. But, I just get the "McIntosh" screen displayed and not the screen from my PC when listening to a CD. (I've renamed the BD input to PC).

Unfortunately, you can't mix the audio from one HDMI input with the video from another HDMI input. It's technically not possible with current HDMI designs. HDMI sends audio and video signals over the same wires, with the audio being sent during the video signal's "vertical blanking interval". In principle it's possible to extract and decode the audio and video and sync them appropriately but no manufacturer has bothered to spend the money to design the necessary electronics.

You might consider using an analog connection for the CD player (HDMI to stereo audio adapters are readily available if your disc player doesn't have analog outputs). Alternatively, you can "rip" your favorite CDs to your computer and play them there, so both audio and video are sent over HDMI from the computer.

Thanks for the response, and I understand what you are saying in regard to two HDMI sources (and why the component cable is required), but in my situation the CD input is being used (analog RCA using the internal DAC of the CD player or digital cable using the DAC of the MX121). But still I get the "McIntosh" screen and not the screen from the video input. I'll contact McIntosh and see what they say - perhaps there is a bug with my unit.

I found a way, but it's not ideal. My PC has an HDMI output and a Display Port output. I use the Display Port to connect directly to the TV (no longer going into the MX121 first) for the picture and use the HDMI output to go to the MX121 for sound:
PC -> DVI -> TV
PC -> USB -> DAC -> RCA L/R -> MX121 (pure direct mode) -> Amps (can choose whatever input you want on the MX121 - you'll still get a picture on the TV as the PC is connected directly to the TV)
CD -> Optical -> DAC -> RCA L/R -> MX121 (pure direct mode)

Also:
PC -> HDMI -> MX121 -> Amps for Dolby True HD, DTS-HD, etc. (the video is simply "swallowed" by the MX121 as it isn't outputting a video signal anymore)

There are a few disadvantages with this setup. If you have another device such as an XBOX, you'll need to use some form of HDMI splitter to use the TV and will need to send the sound to the MX121 via an optical output.
