How is it awesome? Since shopping for my 5508 I've been following these threads and haven't seen anything but small incremental improvements with the 5509 unit. I guess it could be called "good" in that North America will have the same current model as Europe but hardly "awesome."

There may be people who aren't in your particular situation who don't have a 5508, are in the market for a preamp at a reasonable price and don't want the eyesore that is the 80.3 on an open equipment rack. Therefore, it could actually be 'awesome'.

True, I wouldn't want the 80.3 on looks alone and the appearance of the 5509 is a slight improvement over the 5508's. I bought a refurbished 5508 and couldn't wish for more.

Eyesore! I prefer the 80.3 look and Integra has cache Onkyo will never have. Don't forget Integra is built with better internal parts too.

"cachet"... i don't believe the integras offer any additional caching over the onkyos...

I'm open to correction but I have read that the claim that Integra uses better parts has been proved untrue by people who have compared their internals.

I'm assuming by the that you are not serious that the 80.3 has better internal parts than the 5509. It has been proven by an authorized dealer for both Integra and Onkyo that both the 80.2 and the 5508 are identical internally. This was done by checking the part numbers of various internal parts. What he found was that the numbers were the same for both units. Now this could have changed with the 80.3 but I seriously doubt it has.

I have been waiting for the 5509. Onkyo has finally caught up in the looks department compared to the performance.

It is a good chance I will be jumping into the pre/pro market very shortly.

Ok, a little more news from my contact. They are not certain when it will hit these shores. Initial reports are guessing at 2nd or 3rd quarter. This presents me with a dilemma. I have a 5508 prepared to be shipped to my house that I was able to secure for a great price. That said, I am wondering if the 5509 will be available for roughly the same price. Does anyone know if the 5509 MSRP in Europe is higher than the 5508's was last year?

While I do like how the Integra looks, I much prefer the look of the 5509 especially compared to the 5508.

Check out the matching amp....absolutely beautiful.

For the internal parts I'm pretty sure that there is no difference, if you look at the specs same DACs and DSPs etc. There are some very subtle differences across the line though. Integra lacks the pure audio mode but does have a 15 band eq vs the Onkyo 7 band eq. In regards the receivers Integra has assignable triggers while the Onkyos don't which can be a pain when you have external amps.

I've looked and correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that Integra is only available in North American market. It seems us North Americans are suckers for the luxury branding, it was the same with Lexus, Infiniti and Acura until recently only available in North America. In Japan the exact same vehicles are branded Toyota, Nissan and Honda.

Official German pricing for the Onkyo PR-SC5509 is EUR 2.499,00 (MSRP).

The 5509 is a prettier design but is it worth the extra money over what the 5508 is going for right now? For some I'm sure it is but not to me.

Theresa,

Am I wrong? I thought the MSRPs were the same which means the retail prices should not be that different. The amount I was quoted for the 5508 2 weeks ago, I believe was roughly the same price people were quoted shortly after it was released. As such, I believe you would be able to get the 5509 for same price.

Ok. I wish we could be more forthright about prices. I know I didn't pay anything near the suggested list price for the 5508.

OP thanks for the heads up, will hold out for the PR-SC5509, the DHC looks the same as Integras
have always looked

Onkyo amps historically are nothing to brag about, you will be better off with something else.

Distributors are your best bet with Onkyo Pro, that is how i got my PR-SC855P. Much more flexible pricing. Just call them up one by one.

It is customary for Onkyo to release the Pro product about a year after the Integra product to allow those most afflicted by upgraditis get their fill whilst dealers reap the phenomenal 60% markup

This is hillarious, I wish the Integra or Onkyo product had 60% mark-up. I was in the industry for 12 years and sold MANY Integra products. And NONE of them had a 60% mark-up. My .02 is that Integra was way more reliable in terms of client use. Onkyo had more issues than Integra with Amp and HDMI issues.

If you look at the service manuals for the corresponding Integra and Onkyo models you will realize that they are using identical hardware (same boards and parts), except for the packaging. Even the SMs are identical.
As such there is no evidence for what you stated.
