I have 10 year old Denon, and my receiver has a DTS Neo:6 setting that sounds great compared to Pro Logic II, and / or stereo. On my Denon, DTS NEO:6 can be set to either Cinema or Music (I currently have mine set to Cinema).
Now, speaker size, placement, and room acoustics can play a lot into this. I just recently replaced my Toshiba 4:3 CRT with a flat-screen TV, and in doing so, I had to move my center speaker (Wharfedale) to a position slightly lower than it used to be. This has affected the acoustics somewhat in that the sound is not amplified as great as it once was. I'm not an acoustics expert, but I always advise using a sound meter (set on a tripod in the listener's seating location, or the center of the room) to balance a home theater system with. My meter is the old inexpensive analog type from Radio Shack with a moving needle.
