I am in the market for a new receiver for my theater room which is almost completed. I am going to have a projector and watch movies as well as listen to music. Onkyo NR609 has all the features I need and I am a happy onkyo 605 owner but I don't know if I am missing anything. With Newegg having a discount on pioneer vsx 1121 k, i am wandering if pioneer is better at same price as onkyo. I heard 1121k is essentially same as elite Vsx 52. Anyway, should I go for pioneer instead?

I went with pioneer vsx-1121-k. I will see how it compares to my old onkyo 605.

for what it's worth, I would have done the same Do yourself a favour, and read the manual and when you're done, reread it. It will make set up easier. If you haven't received it yet, download the pdf version and get a headstart.

cheers

Thanks for your input. I placed order last night and before I clicked the button, I almost killed myself going back and forth. I have the worst shoppers remorse syndrome but luckily didn't feel a bit of it after the order I am definitely printing out manual to read it before I get it delivered

The Pioneer is comparable to the 709, and cheaper. Go with the 1121.

I used Onkyo for years previously (606,608) and I liked the 1121 much more.

I have used both and got deals on them...

Onkyo 609 ($299 Frys)
  • Much slicker interface
  • Prefer Audyssey (including Dynamic EQ)
  • Sound wise more presence (low-end)*
Pioneer 1121 ($379 Beach Camera)
  • You can turn off the display
  • 6 memory storage locations for EQs
  • Sound wise airy*
In my den I prefer the Onkyo with my 2.0 setup. Audyssey and Dynamic EQ produces a much better sound*. The Pioneer didn't have enough low-end. In my dedicated room (7.2) with more low-end than I know what to do with I like the Pioneer with its 6 EQ settings I can tweak and the fact I can turn the display off.

As a blanket statement (not taking one's preferences into account) I would recommend the Onkyo. I prefer its native sound* and its interface such as on screen volume control is far superior.

* My personal opinion completely unscientifically supported.

Bhazard, Charles thanks for sharing your opinions. I will be comparing 1121 against my old onkyo 605 (should be pretty similar to 609) and see how it holds.

I thought I come back to report my personal experience. After several months of using Pioneer 1121 in dedicated theater room and in living room, I must admit I regret not getting Onkyo instead. I have an older onkyo (605) and while pio definitely has more power, Onkyo sounds better to me. Also, I hate that pioneer doesn't let you watch one source while listening to another as with onkyo I can play PS3 while listening to music. As to size, Pio is also very deep and doesn't fit in average cabinet.
