Is selling my Onkyo PR SC886 for an Emotiva UMC1 a smart decision? It is really an upgrade? I may have not thought about it enough and just bought the UMC 1 but now I am wondering if I should have used the money to put towards buying 2 Crown XLS 5000 amps for my JTR Triple 12 LF speakers.

I'm suddenly thinking the Crown amps would be a bigger, noticeable upgrade to my system.

Thanks.

I would consider it a downgrade, unfortunately.

no clue why you would do this. The UMC-1 has been plagued with problems and you're honestly going to take a shot in the dark if you hope your unit will be working to your liking.

Aside from that, i hear the UMC is great for 2CH music.

this would fall underneath the category of "buy neither"...

- the umc is a pos, and regardless of all the claims about "incredible sq", those claims all come from those who are, ummm, predisposed to think the sun rises and sets on the behind of emotiva... that is besides the fact that when controlled testing is performed on electronics, "night and day" sq differences have a way of disappearing...

- unless your existing amplifiers are clipping/shutting down driving the jtr's, there's no need to change those either...

I would keep the 886 but you already know my thoughts on that subject. Why do you have the need to buy the Crown amps? Are your current amps not up to the task of powering your JTR speakers?

Well it looks like i made a pretty uninformed decision in buying the Emotiva UMC1. Guess i will sell it....

As for the Crown XLS5000 wouldn't that be a significant upgrade compared to the XPA 5 I have now? 200w vs 1800??

Why would you ever feel the need for 1800w? The XPA-5 is an excellent amp and I would guess quite a bit quieter than the Crown (fans?).

I'm always on a quest for more....louder, more bass, etc. I have a big room, 24x48x8 and can always use more power!

at the risk of repeating myself...

are you clipping the emo/shutting it down now? if not, MORE POWER SCOTTY, accomplishes nothing...

your speakers are extraordinarily efficient... i find it unlikely that even in that room, 200 wpc leaves you short...

however, it is your money...

I don't believe the amp is clipping. It sounds pretty good all the way up to +3. The system is pretty loud and clean but wanted to try and take the next step. Whatever that step may be...

I have both, ill go with no.

overall i like the umc1 fine now...but its got a nasty history getting to where it is today.

Onkyo has left enough fried HDMI boards to build a bridge from the US to Japan so they arent exactly an angel either.

I would invest in a different direction - get a mic and REW working, start fixing the room.

REW...most expensive freeware ever...

The UMC-1 is a HUGE downgrade, and I mean HUGE. THe SC886 is a fantastic piece....keep it unless you want serious hassles. If you want to buy emotiva equipment, stick with their XPA amps.........thats about all thats worth buying from them.

Onkyo has definitely had reliability issues with their AVR/prepros without a doubt. But I've been lucky (knock on some wood) and have had no issues with the three Onkyos (805, 885 and 886) I have owned.

2 JTR Captivators powered by a Crest 4000W amp. I'm upgrading the drivers as soon as they are available.

The room is a general play room with 2 couches, table, etc. It's a big room!

nice choice...

got any measuring equipment? if not, it'd be worth starting with that, so you can see exactly what you are dealing with... i'm partial to the omnimic kit, it's very easy to use...

I had a HT company come in when I changed the room around and they ran Audessey and I did not like the resulting sound t all. It seemed to really tone down the system and make it too tame for me. I went back into the menu and changed the EQ to "off" and the system seems much more alive to me now.

It's a large general use room with no acoustical treatments. I was hoping by adding the 2 Crown XLS 5000 amps it would take the system to another level. And by that I mean one step closer to that concert experience. The reality is I don't use the setup much at all, maybe 5-8 movies all year and every Eagles NFL game I can catch. Other than that I use it for about 45 min at a time listening and watching my favorite concert DVD's.
