Currently running a 5.1 system in my house.
I have an old Sony STR-DG720 (http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...umber=STRDG720)
with Polk Monitor 50 speakers setup in 5.1 format.

I've been looking at a new receiver that will allow me to play my ipod through it. I've had my eyes on the new Yamaha series. Would it be a benefical upgrade to go with a new receiver like this, vs the model I have (which is kind of old)?

As far as sound, will i be noticing enough difference / handling of the sound to make the price in upgrading beneficial?

A newer receiver could give you TrueHD and DTS-MA decoding from Blu Ray, room calibration software, USB port for iPod and other smartphones, better speaker terminals (your Sony has cheap spring clips), more clean power, better bass management. networking, Pandora and internet radio streaming, possible wireless A/V control from iPod, iPad or Android phone.

I could see lots of reasons to upgrade. Just depends how much you're willing to spend.

If you want to go the inexpensive route, then just get an iPod dock.

Thanks. Was looking at around $500-800 dollars. Had my eye on the Yamaha RX-V671 which has a lot of nice features (no wifi though).

For $800 you can do way better than the RX-V671.

Look up the RX-V871, Yamaha RX-A810, Onkyo NR809, Denon AVR-3312, Marantz SR5006 and SR6006, Pioneer VSX-1121, Elite VSX-53 etc.

Thanks. Amazon has the Pioneer for 488.88. Not bad at all

If you want Yamaha, the RX-V867 is a good choice too; should cost around the same as the 1121. There's lots of options within that $800 range.

I doubt you notice any "sonic differences" apart from what room EQ nets you (assuming there's not a gain mismatch, which there probably is). This could/should be beneficial by itself though.

If you're satisfied with your Sony, just get a dock or output cable and hook up the iPod that way - no reason to spend $600 just to plug in your iPod...

Oh yeah, none of the models I suggested should approach it either.

All the receivers I've recommended can be had at $800 and below if you call or visit the right websites online.

Are the models you recommend new models (2012?) Or are they older models?
I found the YAMAHA RX-V867 for 470 (refurbished). Not sure how I feel about refurbished receivers. Any input on this?

The models I suggested are "old" but it's not like it matters.

The 867 is last years model but still a good one. At one point Newegg sold it for $299 new, but you'll never see that price again since they're no longer in production.

The Yamaha RX-V671 might be available in store at Fry's for $350 if you have a Fry's near you. This is an excellent price and it has networking.

It's best to buy last year's models on closeout. You can save 100's.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just moved into my condo, and looking to buy in the next 3 days or so.

I guess 2 important features I need are Airplay (to stream my music from itunes to my receiver, and a good EQ. Most models I see have Audyssey 2EQ which after doing research, isn't very good. Not sure why people say it's not really good, but to avoid that EQ and go with the step up.

Primarily because it is the only version of Audyssey unable to EQ the sub which generally needs the most EQ of the setup, not to mention that it is the lowest version of Audyssey, with the next higher version MultEQ having 2x the number of speaker resolution control points as 2EQ and the next higher version above that, MultEQ XT having 16x more speaker control points.

Thanks. I think I'm going to go with the Denon DENON AVR-2112CI refurb. 359.99 (649.99 MSRP).
Seems like an awesome value, and has the airplay, and the MultEQ XT
