Hello all, I am completely new to this stuff so pardon my ignorance but I could really use any advice any of you would be kind enough to offer =0).

I am currently in the market for a receiver and speaker system on the cheap. The system will be used to play vinyl records and play movies/watch TV pretty equally. I am also a poor college student so would like to keep the costs all together under 600ish dollars, this is the tricky part it seems.

Right now I am looking at the
Energy Take 5 System without the subwoofer
The BIC America F12 Subwoofer
And the Denon AVR-1312 5.1 receiver

I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile and really just want the best sound system I can get within my budget, one thing I am particularly confused about is what exactly I sacrifice by buying a cheap receiver.

I truly appreciate any input you could offer. Thanks a lot!

That Denon is on sale at Crutchfield for $200 right now. Plus calling or opening up a chat window with any of the authorized etailers may result in a good price too. You probably should spend at least as much on speakers as an AVR for a point of reference.

That Denon 1312 receiver is $170 at Amazon, but would recommend a receiver with some type of room calibration like the Denon 1612, Pioneer 821, Yamaha 471, etc.

Crutchfield has a $20 discount if your use gift code 3A825 at checkout. Amazon has good pricing on some of those receivers too.

Newegg has the Pioneer VSX-821 for $159 with a promo code so that's your best bet if you're trying to save money.

Room calibration is not something I would have considered, does seem like something I would need though. Any opinions on the speakers/sub?

Definitely upgrade to the 1612 as it not only includes Audyssey MultEQ with auto cal mic but also adds HDMI standby pass through to the TV while the AVR is in Standby mode when you don't want to use the surround speakers and includes a Setup Wizard as well. That speaker/sub combo will match well with the Denon. Also the new Denon AVR-XX13 models are being released now so the 1612 will be on clearance sale.

"JD" – ; ; 585-645-1006, AVScience - Authorized dealer for AVRs, Speakers, etc.
Daily 8am – 8pm EST (Sat/Sun too if you leave message)
Call for pricing on Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer Elite, Def Tech, Atlantic Tech, Oppo
** Think the AVR is defective?  Reset the microprocessor 4-5 times.
