Why does it have to be between those two receivers? Why not a Yamaha or Denon?

The NR616 just came out so you're not going to get many reviews on it yet.

Please provide a little more info about your sources plus tv? projector? speakers? Are dual HDMI outputs of value?

How big is the room?

Just wire your speaker locations and ethernet/cable right now. Do some research and buy a receiver later. Next time plan better.

I have a limited budget and felt for the money that these are my best options.

I am really just looking for opinions

I have a Pioneer Elite 50"

I am running Speakercraft AIM pivoting ceiling speakers in enclosures and a Definitive Supercube 2000 Sub.

Please help!

Room is about 20x20 but will only be utilizing an area for listening of about 10x10

Only need single HDMI output

My electronics expo spam for the day has a Denon 1712 and a sub for $409 with free shipping, a pretty substantial savings.

You can get the Denon AVR-2112 from Electronics Expo for $430-$450. Just call them.

I'd rather have the 2112 than either the Pioneer or Onkyo receivers you mentioned.

Audyssey MultiEQ XT. Much better room calibration than the Onkyo which only has the lesserAudyssey 2EQ. That version does not EQ the subwoofer and has less filters for the other speakers too.

Plus you get a 3 year warranty and it features Airplay for streaming your Apple devices to the receiver. And the Denon hasn't been plagued with reliablity issues like the Onkyo over the past few years.

And the Pioneer VSX-1121 is better than the Elite VSX-51 you mentioned. Better video upscaler, THX sound modes, and does Pandora streaming which the VSX-51 does not do.

Are you trying to buy those two receivers locally? What your budget?

If you want to stream from your laptop or iPod get one of the receivers with Airplay. Either Denon or Pioneer.

yeah I would say the denon 2112 also, has enough hdmi, also has a component input does upconverting. Also unlike the ones you were looking at has MultEQ XT. If you didn't need the component to hdmi I would have said the 1712.

I would not buy either. IMO, they are poor values for what they offer.

I know because I've been looking and just bought.

The VSX-51 uses the Direct Energy amplifier which most likely is their IC Chip amp which wouldn't use discrete bipolar devices. It's the same amp design used on their cheapest Standard Pioneer Receiver.

Onkyo is so unreliable, I cancelled 2 orders for a 609 and 709 and the new 616 has so few A/V inputs and no A/V output connections to be useable in most established equipment collections.

The best receivers on the cheap IMO, are the Yamaha RX-V671, Yamaha Aventage RX-A710, Yamaha Aventage RX-A810, or the Denon AVR-2312CI. Yamaha offers the most bang for the buck for while Denon follows. For the under $800 (out the door) price, I would not consider anything else for sound quality and equipment compatability.

I did some more research and went with the Denon AVR 2112.

I think it has pretty much all of the features I need and got it brand new from Electronics Expo for 429.99.

Just call them and tell them you want a new one for the price of the refurb and they were willing to oblige.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I just hope now that this works well with the rest of my setup.

Speakercraft AIM 7.3 for fronts and center.

Speakercraft AIM 7.2 for Rears.

Definitive Technology SC2000 for my Sub

Any thoughts?

I was all set to go get the Denon 2112 until i was able to listen to it against the Pioneer VSX-51 using the same speakers. I listened to one of my songs on my iphone via the airplay and was able to switch back and forth between the two.
THere is a difference in sound to my ears and the fuller, richer sound of the Pioneer is what i remember growing up with as a kid. The Denon sounded fine, but with a thinner, flatter sound.

Even so I'll probably buy which ever has the easier set up and reliability.
the important features to me now are the Airplay, upcoverting, and ease of use.

Is it the airplay processing that is making the difference? Maybe it has a mp3/aac enhancer
