Hello All,

I started reading this thread and kind of stopped when I saw 18 pages smile.gif

I`m looking to purchase a receiver now for my new house that is being renovated. I dont want to spend a lot of money, but I do want a decent setup. I know I need 2 zones, 1 for porch and 1 for living room and need AirPlay (bluethooth would be nice too), Pandora etc..

I started looking at this Yamaha and the Denon 2113 or 2313. I`m very undecided if I should get this 673BL Yamaha or the Denons.

Which is the better quality, sound, functionality and reliability ? Which provides more functions and I guess more bang for the buck ?

Thanks in advance !

Denon may have a small edge over Yamaha in sound quality, but I like the Yamaha sound better. If you will use the network App to control it, I think it's a no-brainier to go with the yamaha. Yamaha has a great user friendly App that works on most phone and tablets. My 6 year old son knows how to use it.

As far as price goes I checked the discount code of GRANDSLAM at Electronics Expo this morning and it gets you the receiver by itself for $404. That's hard to beat. There were some earlier upgrades but I think they are gone now.

Yeah I saw this price. It is hard to beat... My house wont be finished till New Years.... So I dont really want to jump on it now, unless I find a kill BF type of deal... So I`m still doing my research on what to get....

Hello, after reading all this great info i went and bought this receiver. But now have a few questions if any one could help.
1: is the audio type under info suppose to be PCM all the time? Even when watching dts movies?
2: how do i get the radio to work when watching tv or game. I thought i read this earlier but cant seem to find that info.
3: how do i access the web address for on screen. I thought it said 192.168.1.21. But just hangs on that, since i have a 64b system do i need to run it in 32b?

Other then that, i think i have it set up good.

Thanks.

1. If it shows PCM then that's what the player is sending, so change the player settings to send bitstream (and disable anything such as Secondary Audio that might prevent the player from sending a bitstream).

2. In the Input menu under Video Out, you can specify which video source you want to see when TUNER is selected.

3. Are you trying to control the 673 from a web browser? 64- vs 32-bit is not important. Double check the IP address of the 673 and you should be able to enter this in your browser address bar. But it needs to be on first unless you enable Network Standby.

Intermittent Standby Problem

I am experiencing a very annoying intermittent problem. My receiver is set to Standby mode so that I can watch TV normally on HDMI1 when the receiver is "powered off".

Occasionally, about 10 seconds after I press the "Power Off" button, I get horrible noises out of the speakers. Sometimes it is a loud white noise, sometimes it is a high pitched tone, sometimes there are voices in it. Last night it happened and repeated every time the unit was powered off. I recycled the power by unplugging the receiver and it quit happening, for the moment. But it will happen again because it always does.

I can't be the only one experiencing this symptom. How can it be corrected?

Because of the voices in the noise I was going to say either psychotic episode or haunting, but since uplugging it helped, it doesn't sound like either of those. I would recommend re-checking all of your connections and doing a full reset on the receiver (see the manual). If it doesn't help, then it might need repair. How old is it?

At this point I am thinking that the psychotic episode is the most likely cause.

The receiver is brand new - a couple of weeks old. The manual says (p. 115) "Hold down MAIN ZONE power button on the front panel for more than 10 seconds to initialize and reboot the unit." I have done that but the problem persists.

I believe that I have isolated the problem to a particular sequence of events. The following seems to consistently cause the problem:

  1. Watching TV, with the receiver on and supplying the audio.
  2. Power off the TV.
  3. Power off (standby) the receiver.
  4. Now the receiver is hosed & making funny sounds. Turning the receiver on and off again results in different horrible sounds (sometimes those little voices).

Reversing steps 2 and 3 seems to consistently circumvent the problem. That is, powering off the receiver first and the TV second prevents the problem.

Is anyone else here seeing anything similar? Maybe it has to do with the model of my TV (Hitachi). Regardless, it seems to me to be a flaw in the RX-V673 software.

The main drawback of clips is that they're flimsier and will come loose much easier if there's any tension on the wire, whereas banana clips will just pop out with no damage. As long as the wire makes a nice fat contact inside the clip and you don't yank on the wires though, the juice should flow just fine.

Thanks for the confidence booster. I think installing in-wall speakers might be a weekend project coming down the pipe...

I was about just about the pull the trigger on the 671 and hope for the upgrade, but EE now has it listed as sold out...

I may buy an open box 673 (listed at $439). I don't know much about this, can anyone give me a quick differences between the 673 and the A720?

I pretty much had the same question on these two. I had saw the A720 upconverted component and was 6 lbs heavier.
JBWIII and Galileo chimed in with the A720 being the low end of their upper models and it also has a fifth foot, a second front control dial for selecting sources, a removable power cord, and an extra year of warranty.

The 720 doesn't convert component to HDMI (except for 480i input), so it's the same as the 673 in this respect. With this year's models you need the 1020 to convert HD component to HDMI.

I am trying to decide whether to buy this Yamaha 673 or a Pioneer 1122. I can get the Pioneer about $25 cheaper, but would rather pay the extra to get the better receiver. However, I own pioneer fl51 floor-standing speakers which are 6 ohms. Can I switch the Yamaha settings from 8 ohms to 6?

Amplifier Section Channel 7.2
Rated Output Power (1kHz, 2ch driven) 105W (8ohms, 0.9% THD)
Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven) 90W (8ohms, 0.09% THD)
Dynamic Power per Channel (8/6/4/2 ohms) 130/170/200/240W

That is on the manual, but I am ignorant to audio specs.... any help?

Yes you can switch the Yamaha to 6ohm and it is very easy to do. Look at Advanced menu in the manual.

The soundbar is 7 channel, but Zone 2 is 2.0/2.1, so the soundboard has to be on zone 1 to work properly.

No Pandora is still a deal killer. I'll keep checking back each month to see if Yamaha has grown a brain. Once the v673 has Pandora, I'll own a v673.

Are you sure that Zone 2 can be 2.1? I was under the impression that Zone 2 could only be 2.0. That's why I'm still struggling with the decision about how I might hook this up. The speakers I'm looking at should be pretty darn good without a sub-woofer but from what I've read unless you've got some really high end/expensive speakers (i.e. 5k/pair) a sub-woofer is going to help your sound.

:Dont hold your breath. I think Yamaha is telling people they will add Pandora to pacify them. They probably signed an agreement with Apple to not provide it so that people would be encouraged to buy an Airplay product. Apple is well known for this kind of thing. Why else would they go through the trouble to remove it in the first place? And dont forget they also removed Sirius XM, Netradio and Napster.
