Is there any way to manually turn on the fans inside the receiver? At what temperature do the fans come on? Any way to display the receiver's temp?

I'm going to hook up my new m-5010 amp to run wides with my TX-NR 818 to power the amp on and off I'll use a smart strip SCG3E I'll plug the amp into a switched plug, that would be the same as older receivers that had a switched outlet on the back am I correct. This is because I don't want to use the twelve volt trigger.

My main setup
PN60E8000 Plus evolution 2013Kit + Directv genie + Panasonic 3D blu-ray player + Onkyo TX-NR 818 9.2 using Onkyo M-5010 2-Channel Amplifier for wides.
MY DEN

This problem only happens in USB mode all other modes are fine. After contacting Onkyo, they said bring it in to my local service center. I dropped it off yesterday and and although he had heard of the HDMI board issue, he had not heard of this. I asked for a time frame of how long it would take, he said 4 weeks!eek.gif I thought he was joking. My question is have more people experienced this problem, but just don't feel bothered enough to fix it or am I just one of the lucky few? Also doesn't 4 weeks sound like an awful lot of time?mad.gif

Just an update to my 2 month dilemma with this continual problem. Brought it in for service and they replaced the HDMI board, got it back home and the problem persists. Brought it back today and no one knows what to do. Everyone thinks it's a handshake issue. I have only read 1 other post about someone with this problem, but there must be many more that just aren't bothered enough to do anything. Now waiting on Onkyo to decide what to do. Please post if you have had any problems with your 818 while using the front USB and an Ipod. Thanks.

I had an issue with my receiver when it would come out of stand by after it was in stand by over night, I would get no sound. I brought it to the service center, they had it for a month then they informed me that they couldn't duplicate what I was experiencing. I picked it back up and I haven't had it happen since. I haven't had anything like what your having but I thought I would share. Have you replaced your HDMI cables to rule out any hand shake issues. Good luck hope onkyo takes care of you as your still under warranty keep on them till your happy.

This problem is with the receiver in USB mode only. All other inputs work fine. I have tried different Apple USB cords with no help. I have a TX-NR708 and the Ipod works fine in USB mode in that receiver. I realize many don't use the USB input with an Ipod, so they may have the problem and don't know it. I really like this receiver otherwise, it puts out incredible sound, just this one problem.

Have you tired the rear USB Port to see if it behaves the same way with your iPod I know you most likely have done that.

I have a quick question what color is your audessy Mic the reason I ask is because I have three receivers an 818, 616 and a 509 I have three Mic's two black ones and a silver one. I can't remember which one goes with the 818 or if it evens matters. I think it's the silver one but I'm not sure.

Thank you yes I just bought three of them works great. I like the way that there's a 90 second delay before the outlets shut off.

I have that very issue right now. Hmmm...maybe I should try changing HDMI cables.

Do HDMI cables go bad very often?

Not really sure why they would unless you move them often plugging unplugging twisting I wouldn't think so. if you live in a humid climate like I do here in Florida but we are inside with air conditioning running so I don't think corrosion would be part of the equation. Just get a good set of the latest high speed cables and you should be set. If your using cables that are old and not high speed you may have issues. Amazon has great cables that are not expensive.

MultEQ XT32 have you ever noticed how noisy things are? Just when you start running this a neighbor starts up his lawn mower, a car drives by, the dog barks as something out side that has his attention. These thing you never noticed till your wanting everything to be as quiet as possible. It never fails. Lawn mower, a motorcycle, a car drives by,emergency vehicles, dog barks I realize just how quiet things are not, maybe I should run this at three in the morning but then I'll wake everyone in the house you can't win.

Re-ran today to add a new center channel. No one was home. I had the AC off and it was dead silent. At the 5th mic position the clock in the foyer just outside the theater started dinging. At the 6th position the neighbor started a lawnmower. Re-ran...

I've had two occasions in which the phone rings about 20 minutes into its setup. I get about three or four phone calls a week.

try another cable or another input. I do hear a lot of set top box issues when it comes to audio.

Thanks.
Well I had the HDMI board issue and with mine the power would fade in certain inputs. Change inputs and all was fine until that one did the same thing. Had to send it in for service, I live in Louisiana and had to ship it to Michigan. $45 shipping and over a month in the shop. Received it back and all worked fine. Until now! Again having the issue. Unfortunately it is since out of warranty and I do not feel like spending the money to have it repaired again to maybe go out again. For such a high quality item from Onkyo it's a shame that it has to. Have this black eye! Really turned off by Onkyo right now and may never buy another product from them.

Hi All, I purchased an 818 last October and use my receiver with an Ipod to listen to music almost daily. While using the front USB port to hook up my Ipod every now and then I get what sounds like a skip or pop while playing music. Sometimes it happens 2-3 times in a song and other times not at all. At first I thought it was the Ipod, but I've tried 3 different Apple devices(Ipod nano, touch and Ipad) and the problem is the same although these devices work perfectly by themselves. I tried doing the factory reset and making sure the latest firmware was installed via USB with no help. So I searched this forum and the net, but could only find one other person with this issue. This problem only happens in USB mode all other modes are fine. After contacting Onkyo, they said bring it in to my local service center. I dropped it off yesterday and and although he had heard of the HDMI board issue, he had not heard of this. I asked for a time frame of how long it would take, he said 4 weeks! I thought he was joking. My question is have more people experienced this problem, but just don't feel bothered enough to fix it or am I just one of the lucky few? I have been to my service center 3 times, 1.5 hours round trip. Once to recreate the problem before they replaced the HDMI board. The next to pick up the repaired unit, only to find out the problem was still there and a third to recreate the problem for another tech. They have now shipped it to the main service center in Michigan. I am hoping to hear something this week. If they can't repair it, they better replace it, I'm getting a little PO'd. My other Onkyo is a TX-NR708 that works fine with this Ipod. I really like my Onkyo's, but like you this problem has me thinking of trying something else.

I have the same problem with Apple devices on the front USB port. I did all the firmware updates... no help. Different cables, different Apple devices, no change. Official Onkyo forum, no help. I called Onkyo, and they said they never heard about that problem either. My only option was shipping it out for service. I was under warranty but I did not want to eat the shipping change and be without my receiver for who knows how long.

I also thought it was pretty fishy that every other USB device worked fine--Apple was the only problem. To me, it smelled like a software problem, and I didn't really have any confidence that Onkyo could fix it. If the guy on the phone said, "oh yeah, I know exactly what that is," I would have sent it in... but since he didn't, I thought the odds of success were slim.

I decided to work around the problem and now I get my music a different way. If you are using an iPod, you probably have all your music in iTunes... maybe get a cheap AirPlay receiver and play music from the computer? It's not ideal if you want to use the iPod but ...

I actually did not try the rear port because the manual says that iPods can only use the front port, but I guess it can't hurt.

This was all in May of 2013, by the way.

Video at 4K Not Working Right TX-NR818

This is what I posted on the Onkyo forum for my new NR818

"I just received my TX-NR818 yesterday and had it set up including running Audyssey calibration. I set my Monitor out to 4K upscale to utilize the extra capabilities of my Sharp LC70SQ15U. When I shut off the unit and restarted my system, the audio played with no video. I finally did a clear reset on the unit and had to rerun the audio calibration. Unfortunately the same video issue was present. I tried a number of things and found that when I pushed the monitor out button on the panel, the video would then sync at 1080p. After calling and talking with tech support twice I ran out of options except to take it to a repair station. I finally figured out that if I just set the monitor out to "auto", it would just scale the video to 1080p and it would sync properly when the unit was switched off and on. Apparently there is some issue with the unit syncing to the 4K video resolution when it is reinitialized. I hate to take a brand new unit to the repair station, but I've run out of options if I want to utilize the 4K upscaling. I am using new HDMI cables certified to 1.4 high speed. I have three cables at 1 meter and one cable at 1.5 meter so I don't think the cables are at issue.
Anyone else have similar issues with 4K upscaling failing to reinitialize?
Thanks,

then followed up with this;

"I am using HDMI1 on the Sharp LC-70SQ15U. I am able to get a 4K signal from the NR818 to the Sharp when I switch Monitor Out>Main>4K upscale and the Sharp reports 2160P at 30fps and the picture looks fine with no smearing. I previously tried a much cheaper Denon AVR-E400 and it worked fine at sending 4K at 30fps to my Sharp with no trouble. I sent it back thinking the NR-818 would do a better job of upscaling with the two video upscaling chips, also it had Audyssey MultEQ XT32 that I wanted. I talked to Ken at Onkyo tech service and he assured me the NR818 should upscale to my Sharp TV as advertised.
As far as "Page 57 of the manual states that 4K upscaling may result in no picture for some TVs.", that is a cop out for their advertised technology which questions the faith I have in their product capabilities and future products!! How am I supposed to make an educated purchase decision if I can't rely on the advertised performance specs? I've downloaded and read the manuals for the NR828, NR929, and NR1010 and they all have weasel words about upscaling not working on some tv's. I wonder what tv's they're referring to? I'm not sure that any of their products will upscale 4k content to my tv based on their exclusion statements.
I bought my Sharp LC-70SQ15U because of it's 4K capabilities with the extra 10,000,000 sub pixels. I want a receiver that will allow me to utilize it's capabilities.
I really like all the features the NR818 has and hope I can resolve this issue.
The unit is at the service shop for repairs to resolve this issue or I will send the unit back if it doesn't perform as advertised."

Does anyone on this forum use 4K upscaling with the NR818 and what is your experience? Thanks

Most manuals for these devices are pretty terrible at giving specifics. But the truth is ... this line is completely accurate. Most, if not all, non-4K TVs will show a blank picture if you enable 4K and send a 4K signal to that non-4K display.

OK I got my iPod out connected it with FRONT USB listening mode direct I'm happy to report no skips no pops listen to the Beatles across the universe, all was fine Jimmy Hendrix all along the watchtower all good, Angel Dave Matthews beautiful, as tears go by the stones nothing yet still playing very good, who do you love quicksilver messenger service thought I heard something but it was the source. I'm sorry didn't hear it on mine thank goodness sorry.

OK I just heard something where the streets have no name I heard a little pop a skip started it over seems to do it again, not sure what that is it almost seems the onkyo and Apple are not playing nicely not trying to be a conspirator hear but I do agree software issue is my guess.
Now I know what your talking about with the FRONT USB it sucks.
Ok I'm listen now through the AUX from my headphone jack and OMG THIS IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY this sound 100% better the sound is what I expect these songs to sound like. I think that USB Port needs some kind of update.
Through the AUX no POPS SKIPS pure audio this thing sound great.... just get yourself a left and right Jack and plug it into AUX And then that into the head phone Jack on you iPod you will never go back to that USB Port.

I know this is not what you want to hear but that front USB does not play nice with my iPod

My main setup
PN60E8000 Plus evolution 2013Kit + Directv genie + Panasonic 3D blu-ray player + Onkyo TX-NR 818 9.2 using Onkyo M-5010 2-Channel Amplifier for wides.
MY DEN
PN51F5500 + Directv Genie + Panasonic 3D blu-ray player + Onkyo TX-NR 616 7.2
